We chat to Bilbo Baggins himself, Martin Freeman, about starring in The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug...
It's not often you hear a Hobbit swear. But when Martin Freeman, dressed in a lively electric blue suit with a knitted, stripy necktie, came bounding into the interview room earlier this week, that's more-or-less what happened. Because while the title character of The Hobbit is quiet initially timid in the face of danger, Freeman's funny and gregarious, with his anecdotes, self-effacing humour and language just as colourful as his suit.
The Desolation Of Smaug, out now in the UK, gives Freeman's Bilbo a greater range of light and shade, with the story giving him plenty of opportunities to show off his talent for physical humour, as well as a chance to explore the darker corners of his character, too. So with this at the front of our minds,...

Joe Utichi contributes to Deadline’s UK coverage. Anger Management scribe Bob Kushell has crossed the Atlantic to the UK for a new BBC Three sitcom set around the world of assisted suicide. Known for taking more risks than conservative stablemates BBC One and Two, the digital channel aimed at the 16-34 year-old demo has ordered a six-episode season of the 30-minute show Way To Go, about “three ordinary guys who find themselves forced by an extraordinary set of circumstances into setting up an assisted-suicide business”. Veteran comedy writer Kushell, whose writing credits Stateside include The Simpsons and Third Rock from the Sun, says he’s thrilled to follow in the footsteps of British comic giants like Monty Python, Black Adder and Fawlty Towers. “There has been no bigger thrill in my life than to have a show on the BBC.” The Inbetweeners‘ Blake Harrison will star alongside Ben Heathcote and Marc Wootton.

London — Television writer David Croft, who helped create much-loved British sitcoms such as "Dad's Army" and "Are You Being Served?," died Tuesday. He was 89.
Croft's agent Tim Hancock, said the writer died at his holiday home in Portugal. Croft's family said in a statement that he "died peacefully in his sleep," but did not give a cause.
The son of actors, Croft served with the Royal Artillery during World War II before starting a showbiz career, eventually moving into TV as a producer, director and writer.
Several of his comedies had military settings, including "It Ain't Half Hot Mum" – set in wartime India and Burma – and "Dad's Army," about a hapless World War II Home Guard unit.
Co-created with Jimmy Perry, "Dad's Army" is considered a comedy classic, and is still frequently rerun more than 40 years after its debut.
Croft and Perry had another long-running hit with "Hi-de-Hi!" set in a 1950s holiday camp.

Cult British comedy Absolutely Fabulous is to be revamped for three new U.S. TV specials.
Cancer survivor Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley will again lead the cast, as bawdy socialites Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone, in the new sagas, which will tie in with the 20th anniversary of the sitcom's debut in Britain.
A statement from Saunders reads, "We hope that, like a good bottle of champagne, we have grown better with age but lost none of our sparkle.
"Viewers in the U.S. have been very kind to the show over the years and we are very happy to return... We fully intend to party like it’s 1991."
Producer Jon Plowman adds, "All of the originals, who are back together again, are still truly absolutely fabulous and we hope that the new adventures of Edina, Patsy, Saffy, Bubble and Mother, plus a few surprising guests, will entertain both our tried and trusted U.S. fans, as well as gain us some new friends."
The three special episodes will be a co-production of BBC America and Logo, which has been airing the original five seasons of Absolutely Fabulous in the U.S. since April.
The series debuted on the BBC in 1992 and originally ran for three seasons. It was revived for two more seasons, which ran from 2001 and 2003.

It's been 20 years since Edina Monsoon, Patsy Stone, and the rest of the Absolutely Fabulous gang took the world by storm, and after seven years away, the show will be back with three all-new specials.
Logo (our parent company) and BBC America will serve as joint American co-producers for the series, and it's obvious that show creator, writer, and star Jennifer Saunders knows what a huge following the show has in the U.S.
“We are thrilled to be able to celebrate our 20th birthday with all of the original cast. We hope that, like a good bottle of champagne we have grown better with age but lost none of our sparkle. Viewers in the Us have been very kind to the show over the years and we are very happy to return on not one but two Us channels at once,...

Sweetie darlings, they’re baaaack! Everyone’s favorite professional booze hounds/fashion victims Eddie Monsoon and Patsy Stone could be reuniting. Patsy herself, Joanna Lumley, told Playbill.com that the cast is in talks to reprise their famous Absolutely Fabulous roles. This calls for a Stoli, babe.
The dynamic duo of Lumley and Jennifer Saunders showed us the true meaning of fabulous (and drunkenness) through five seasons, first in the 90s and then again in the early 00s. Now the ladies could be hitting the bottle again. When asked about reunion rumors, Lumley told Playbill.com:
I’ve heard talk, too. Jon Plowman, who’s the executive producer, wrote to Jennifer, and Jen wrote to me before I left [England] and said, ‘Let’s talk through it. What do you think?’ And I said, ‘Bring it on.’ Because we’re all still here. Mother’s still alive – the wonderful June Whitfield.

For me, summer is not a season for television. It's a season for kicking back in the yard or the park with fizzy cocktails, eating meals composed entirely of various types of ice cream, and laughing so hard with your friends that your mother/landlord/neighbors yell at you or you lose control of a bodily function.
Enter Logo's (AfterElton.com's parent company) Beautiful People, the first series of the summer to allow you to do all of these things in the comfort of your air-conditioned living room.
Equal parts wistful remembrance and raucous, candy-colored fantasy, Beautiful People is sort of what The Wonder Years would look like were it directed by a relatively well-behaved John Waters. Loosely based on the memoirs of Simon Doonan (first released in the U.K. under the title Nasty), the series tells the story of an impossibly fabulous and...
