The first week of October is officially here, so it’s full steam ahead on the Halloween season from here on out. This week’s streaming picks embrace spooky season festivities by centering on holiday-themed horror movies that feature Halloween parties as their slaying grounds.
Some of these horror movies bring the fun, while others aim to spike your adrenaline. But all use Halloween parties as a centerpiece for the horror that’s unleashed within.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

Cemetery of Terror – AMC+, Shudder
Rubén Galindo Jr.’s most prominent horror feature is the American-influenced Don’t Panic (available on Shudder), but the Halloween-centric Cemetery of Terror offers the most fun. A trio of college kids decides to impress their ladies by stealing a body from a morgue for a Halloween prank and party in an abandoned house.

The trailer is here for FaZe Clan’s long-awaited foray into the feature film world, courtesy of daily-vlogger-turned leading man Brian ‘FaZe Rug’ Awadis, the star of Crimson.
First announced back in August and apparently shot vlog-style, Crimson follows Awadis -- counts 27 million followers across all platforms -- as he moves into his brand new multimillion-dollar home, whereupon he encounters spooky neighbors who appear to belong to a clown cult of sorts.
Crimson was directed by Gregory Plotkin, an editor on the famed horror flick Get Out. Dropping just prior to Halloween on Oct. 29, the film was produced by digital studio Invisible Narratives and features a soundtrack produced by Grammy winning producer Beam, which features the lead single "Psycho."

It’s only January 3rd of 2019 and already, director Gregory Plotkin has served up a delightful (read: terrifying) treat in Hell Fest, the theme park slasher movie that’s currently simmering at just over $17 million worldwide.
And considering the movie itself was tethered to a $5.5 million product budget, that’s a pretty incredible feat by anyone’s standards, and if history has taught us anything, it’s that surprising box office returns tend to ignite talks of a potential sequel – just look at Happy Death Day 2U. And Hell Fest? Well, its fate ultimately rests in the hands of CBS and Lionsgate, though for what it’s worth, Plotkin is more than willing to have another crack at the whip, even if he admits that it’s unlikely Hell Fest 2.0 will ever materialize.

2018 has been a fascinating year in cinema. The medium carried me through three living spaces across two countries, and always managed to leave me ecstatic, wrecked, and completely in love. During my time in Nanjing, I was all over the historical and ideological map—from Ready Player One and The Matrix trilogy to Sergei Eisenstein. Coming back to America in June, I began to play catch-up by devouring contemporary cinema. I saw infinitely more movies released in 2018 than last year, and as such, my ‘top’ criteria had to change, or perhaps evolve.
When compiling this list, what struck me were indelible films, images, and ideas that followed me around, feelings resurfacing days or months later. I’m compelled into watching making-of features, listening (and re-listening) to podcasts; in one way or another, these films just keep popping up. Then, I went further, to consider viewings that were exciting, exhilarating, rejuvenating: where I’m enthralled,...

Tony Todd is best known for playing the hook-handed, bee spewing urban legend/killer Candyman in Bernard Rose’s 1992 film, based on a story by Clive Barker. Prior to Candyman, Todd took the lead in Tom Savini’s 1990 Night of the Living Dead remake and had small roles in Platoon, Colors and Clint Eastwood’s Bird. In 2000, he became a regular player in the Final Destination films as the ominous Mr Bludworth. The next fifteen years saw Tony star in numerous features, including Adam Green’s Hatchet films, before reuniting with Candyman director Bernard Rose in 2015 for a part in his brilliant modern day Frankenstein adaptation. But Tony Todd isn’t solely tied to the genre that made him famous. As well as having featured in over two hundred productions, he is a passionate blues fan and has several other theatre and TV projects in the pipeline, as well as planned future feature films.

A masked killer stalks teenagers through mazes and ghoulish ghost trains in a cynically produced Halloween outing
Assigned a film in which a masked killer stalks teenagers around pumpkins, the marketers of this thick slice of Scooby-Dooism presumably elected to avoid David Gordon Green’s Halloween redo like the plague. The fact that it now opens a fortnight after its 31 October setting can be taken as indication of what a non-urgent proposition it is.
The Usp of Gregory Plotkin’s slasher – which won’t feel terribly unique to anyone with a passing knowledge of the Tobe Hooper oeuvre, or the various Houses of Wax – is that teenagers are chased through a morbidly dressed fairground. Sometimes, the ghouls leaping on our heroes – to the inevitable rasping soundtrack farts – are actors playing actors playing hellfiends; sometimes, it’s the killer himself. It is not the most complex horror movie you’ll ever see.

With Blumhouse’s Halloween hitting theaters tomorrow, I think it’s safe to say that the slasher genre is making one helluva a comeback. Although Michael Myers’ return certainly helps revitalize the genre, let’s not ignore the impact of Hell Fest, the amusement park-set horror film from Gregory Plotkin. […]

Editor, director, and Blumhouse veteran, Gregory Plotkin, has had a multifaceted film career. Having edited most of the films in the Paranormal Activity franchise, even directing The Ghost Dimension, Greg went on to edit Happy Death Day and Get Out. Opening this weekend is his newest directorial horror entry, Hell Fest – a horror theme park, slasher extravaganza, staring the […]

Hell Fest is the latest simplistic conventional horror film from the depths of the money-grubbing Hollywood machine. Helmed by director Gregory Plotkin, only his second feature after highly successful stints as an editor on numerous productions, ranging from Jordan Peele’s Get Out to the Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams comedy Game Night. Plotkin is most noticeably and well known to have been a longtime series editor on the long-enduring and softly effective Paranormal Activity franchise, even helming the fifth entry Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, with little to no acclaim or credit. He returns back to the director’s chair with his latest venture in Hell Fest,...

This weekend director Gregory Plotkin’s amusement park slasher film Hell Fest slashed into theaters starring Bex Taylor-Klaus, Amy Forsyth, and Tony Todd. How did the film do? Meh. CBS Films finally made a good movie and it bombs. Go figure. Hell Fest, the Gregory Plotkin-directed slasher, bombed at the box office during its opening weekend earning an abysmal estimated $5M domestically. For a film pegged as the beginning of a new franchise, I think it’s safe to say we won’t be seeing a sequel anytime […]...

I can think of no better way to kick off the Halloween season than with a celebration of frights and friendships — oh, and bloody murders. Razor sharp, with a cast of characters so likable you’ll hope they all survive, Hell Fest is a giddy and almost euphoric horror experience.
In Gregory Plotkin’s new horror feature, a group of college buddies are headed to the titular haunted park to have some fun and get terrified. They get both, but not in the doses they’d ideally measure out due to rumors of a masked killer sneaking into haunted attractions. Once inside, he creates a terror that is all too real, protected by the spirit of the season and a collection of realistic props. The film’s premise is a clever one, drawing parallels between viewers and the group, all strapped in for the art of the scare. But we know something they don’t,...

This attempt at a retro slasher flick has no sharp edges whatsoever.
The most interesting aspect of Hell Fest is its setting: a rather large and labyrinthine horror amusement park of sorts, full of mazes and attractions and costumed employers all in the service of scaring the pants off the customers. The exhibits and rides are all elaborate and detailed, in keeping with the increasingly extravagant events that pop all over the country this time of year, making one beg the question: why watch this movie when one can find a real-life horror show to slink through instead?
The truth is, even if you don’t have any such destination near you, there is really no reason to watch Hell Fest anyway. Ostensibly a throwback to the glory days of slasher movies (circa the 1980s), Hell Fest is too calculated in its objectives, missing the grittiness and nastiness of the...

Early read here on Universal’s Night School which is tracking for a $9.5M opening day and a weekend that’s between $27M-$29M. While $30M would be a sweet take, that’s still an impressive number in these times for a comedy, Uni had the previous best opening this year with its R-rated teen pic Blockers at $20.6M.
Warner Bros. animated pic Smallfoot will own second with a $6M Friday (a few cents more than their 2016 Storks $5.7M opening day), and a three-day that’s between $20M and $22.5M. Two films in the final weekend of September, opening to $20M, seriously, exhibitors aren’t complaining especially with this month on track to be the second best ever with around $621M after last year’s record $698.5M.

Every year, the lead-up to Halloween brings a new crop of would-be franchise-starters attempting to be the next, well, “Halloween.” They spring up like so many pumpkin patches, most of which go rotten faster than everyone’s favorite seasonal gourd. “Hell Fest” is no exception, and it’s certainly attempting an understandable, seasonably appropriate trick. With hints of a built-in mythos and clear intentions of a sequel in which the designated final girl (Amy Forsyth) lives to fight another day, Gregory Plotkin’s slasher aspires to be something new and exciting but ends up as disposable as its victims. “Halloween” this is not, however much it would love to be.

To celebrate the release of Hell Fest, we caught up with Edwards for our latest Q&A to discuss memorable moments on set, working with director Gregory Plotkin (aka "Gucci Greg"), and her experiences in real-life haunted attractions.
Congratulations on Hell Fest, Reign! What attracted you to the role of Brooke and the story of Hell Fest, and what was the audition process like for your character?

Eye candy without much to offer the brain or emotions, “Hell Fest” is a competently crafted slasher film rendered instantly forgettable by its disinterest in character, plot, and motivation, let alone original ideas. An early Halloween salvo, it will be gone from theaters before that holiday (or even the latest screen “Halloween”) arrives, but should in the short term satisfy that seasonal itch among horror fans before bigger, better fright-fests arrive.
After the obligatory prior-victim’s-fate prelude, we meet the film’s college student protagonists, who are young and cute but not much else. Natalie (Amy Forsyth) reunites with ex-roomie Bff Brooke (Reign Edwards) — the movie suggests there’s some reason why they haven’t seen each other for a while, but never gets around to explaining it — while less enthusiastically renewing acquaintance with Brooke’s irksome new flatmate Taylor (Bex Taylor-Klaus).

Halloween is right around the corner. The season for creepy costumes, pumpkin carving, and candy collecting is nigh. Above all, it’s the season for haunted hayrides, menacing mazes, eerie escape rooms, and spooky spectacles. These attractions are more popular now than ever. Forbes reported on the numbers: Halloween spending reached $8.4 billion in 2016, and it was estimated to reach $9.1 billion last year, so the timing is perfect for a big-screen horror film that’s set almost entirely in an amusement park on All Hallows’ Eve.
Hell Fest falls back on a familiar formula: put archetypal, good-looking young people in peril on a dark night and let the body count commence. The “Hell Fest” of the title is a traveling carnival that features a labyrinth of horror-themed rides, diversions, and themed rooms, and attracts thousands of fans wherever it goes. Last weekend ended up being the worst overall weekend of the year so far with all films on Mojo's weekend chart totaling a mere $91.8 million with the top twelve grossing just over $81 million. This weekend, however, should find the top twelve alone combining to bring in over $100 million as the month is shaping up to be the second highest grossing September ever, just behind last year's record performance for the month. A pair of newcomers are expected to finish #1 and #2 for the weekend, beginning with Universal's comedy Night School followed by the Warner Bros. animated title Smallfoot. Additional new releases include Lionsgate's release of the CBS horror-thriller Hell Fest and Pinnacle Peak's Little Women opening in a moderate number of locations. Set to top the weekend box office is Universal's comedy Night School starring Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish. The film is set to debut in just over...

Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish are hoping that big laughs equal big bucks when “Night School” opens this weekend. Before the comedic duo can claim box office victory, however, they’ll have to fend off one adorable Yeti.
Universal’s “Night School” is eyeing a debut between $27 million and $35 million from 2,900 theaters. The film reunites Haddish with “Girls Trip” director Malcolm D. Lee and producer Will Packer. The PG-13 comedy finds Haddish playing an unorthodox teacher helping Hart get his Ged. If estimates hold, the launch of “Night School” looks to be on par with “Girls Trip’s” $30 million start. That raunchy comedy became a sleeper hit, grossing over $140 million worldwide off its $19 million budget. “Night School” has a slightly higher price tag at $29 million.

While yucks haven’t translated into bucks at the box office for quite some time, the comedy genre is expected to come alive this weekend with Universal’s PG-13 rated Malcolm D. Lee-directed feature Night School which is set to ace a $30M-plus opening; the highest debut for a comedy, well, since last July’s Girls Trip ($31.2M) which was also directed by Lee and repped a record debut for the director at the B.O.
When it comes to comedy stars, moviegoers like a discovery, and that’s Girls Trip star Tiffany Haddish and she’s paired with one of the few box office stars who can actually still make it work on the big screen, Kevin Hart.

We’ve got a fun new trailer to share with you for the upcoming horror film Hell Fest! The trailer is presented in a retro-style trailer with an very heavy 80s vibe and I love it! It does a great job setting up the tone of the film in an entertaining and cheesy way.
Hell Fest centers around a masked serial killer turns a horror themed amusement park into his own personal murderous playground, and he terrorizes a group of friends while the rest of the patrons believe that it is all part of the bloody show. This looks like it will be an entertaining horror movie.
College student Natalie (Forsyth) is visiting her childhood best friend Brooke (Edwards) and her roommate Taylor (Taylor-Klaus). If it was any other time of year these three and their boyfriends might be heading to a concert or bar, but it is Halloween which...

CBS Films has launched a fantastic retro 80s trailer for horror movie Hell Fest, about a horror theme park that becomes a killing playground for a masked serial killer.
