Winnie Mandela
Written by Darrell Roodt and Andre Pieterse
Directed by Darrell Roodt
Canada/South Africa, 2011
Darrell Roodt’s film Winnie Mandela is an oddity. It’s almost trying to be two movies squeezed into the running time of one: first, a typical biography of the “Mother of the Nation” of South Africa; later, a dark and ambiguous look at some of the horrible things that Winnie Mandela was accused of doing while her husband Nelson served a 27-year prison sentence. Both movies have good intentions but both are also heavily flawed, with awkward tonal shifts and misuse of fine actors. There will be better movies this fall, and worse ones, but no movie this season will be quite so strange.
Roodt (a South African director responsible for the well-received Sarafina! and the vile Dangerous Ground) recruited Academy-recognized talent for this joint Canadian/South African production: Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson...

If only for its refusal to sand down the rough edges of its protagonist’s life, “Winnie Mandela” stands out in a field of movies that offer up sanitized, classroom-ready biographies of famous people. But this is a movie that’s destined to be remembered for proving that Jennifer Hudson’s “Dreamgirls” performance was no fluke; here, she hits a vast array of notes even though she doesn’t get to sing until the final credits. While “Winnie Mandela” mostly connects its plot dots in a purely predictable biopic fashion, writer-director Darrell Roodt (co-scripting with Andre Pieterse, working from the biography by Anne Marie.

Winnie Mandela-centered biopic, Winnie, premiered way back at the 2011 Tiff and is still without an American distributor, so if and when it will find a stateside premiere is still in question.
Directed by Darrell J. Roodt, starring Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Hudson as Winnie Mandela and Terence Howard as Nelson Mandela, the film is based on the biography by Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob.
Adapted by Roodt and Andre Pieterse, the film tells the life story of Winnie Mandela tracing her life from her childhood to her experience after her husband was put in prison.
This historical biopic will be hitting theaters in Canada next month (October 5th) and now a new trailer has premiered online to promote the release.

The trailer for Jennifer Hudson’s Winnie hit the web earlier this week. See her show off her African accent and lead a revolution in the clip below.
The Winnie trailer has been around for a few days now, but just in case you had not seen it, we have it for you.
Winnie is a biopic of Winnie Mandela, the wife of Nelson Mandela and a key figure in the anti-apartheid struggle. She is a figure of much controversy and has been, at various points in her life, convicted of kidnapping, fraud, and theft.
Hudson plays the activist while Terrence Howard takes on Nelson Madela.
The film is directed and co-written by South African filmmaker Darrell Roodt. Andre Pieterse and Paul L. Johnson also helped write the screenplay, which is based on the biography written by Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob.

It’s the story of the fall from grace and redemption of South Africa’s onetime most famous teen black movie star, Muntu Ndebele. Co-written by Bishai and Andre Pieterse, A Million Colours stars Wandile Molebatsi, Jason Hartman, Stelio Savante and Masello Motana. Former wife of Nelson Mandela complains she was not consulted by makers of movie about her life
She has had her share of foes, and those who cross her often come to regret it. Now Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, South Africa's most formidable matriarch, has turned her wrath on the makers of a film about her life, complaining that she had no say in her transition to the big screen.
The film's director, South African Darrell Roodt, has described Winnie as "the ultimate women's movie" and "an amazing love story".
But Madikizela-Mandela responded: "I think it is an insult. I don't know what would be romantic in our bitter struggle."
She told CNN: "I have absolutely nothing against Jennifer [Hudson, the film's star], but I have everything against the movie itself," .
"I was not consulted. I am still alive, and I think that it is a total disrespect to come to South Africa, make a movie about my struggle,...

Here's our full story on "Winnie" as it appeared on Nov. 18, 2009:
Jennifer Hudson, the Oscar-winner and ex-American idol contestant, is getting ready for her next big challenge -- playing "Winnie," the former wife of South Africa's first black president, Nelson Mandela.
Darrell J. Roodt is set to direct. Roodt previously helmed 2006's "Yesterday," and also worked on "Cry, the Beloved Country" and "Sarafina!"
Based on Anna Marie du Preez Bezdrob's biography "Winnie Mandela:A Life," Andre Pieterse, Roodt, and Paul L. Johnson collaborated on the script.
Variety is reporting that Mandela's "former wife is a far more complicated figure. She has been depicted as the mother and wife who was a steadfast supporter of her activist husband and who was jailed herself for campaigning for his release and fighting against apartheid. Her image was subsequently tarnished by association with a bodyguard who murdered a 14-year old alleged informer,...

Plans are well ahead with the making of a biopic about Winnie Mandela, even though the producers of the film have been receiving legal threats from the former wife of South African President Nelson Mandela about the script.
One of the producers, Andre Pieterse, has said that the “well-researched” screenplay will be made ”without any influence from any of the main characters.” Jennifer Hudson and Terrence Howard have signed on to play the Mandelas in this $15 million drama which will span their lives over decades. They’re going to commence shooting later this month in Cape Town and Hudson said, “I felt as though her story was never told, and it’s worth being told.” It’s too bad Winnie disagrees with her!

London, May 17 – A new biopic on Nelson Mandela’s wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is facing legal threat.
Madikizela-Mandela’s lawyers have written to the producer of the film, Andre Pieterse, saying that she “would like to see the script and approve” before production begins.
The letter also contained the threat “of action that could stop production.”
“A lawyer’s letter came some weeks ago,” the BBC News quoted Pieterse as saying.
He said: “It was a benign letter and yet it contained the threat of an indictment, an interdict.

Production on Jennifer Hudson and Terrence Howard's new film about the ex-wife of South African leader Nelson Mandela will go ahead as planned - despite the threat of legal action from Winnie Mandela herself.
