The Visions du Réel film festival’s greatest singularity is two-fold: its lack of pretense and judicious curatorial eye. The first is, of course, directly related to the other. In centering the festival on the quality, even radicalness, of film praxes, instead of a locus for glamour and business, VdR makes room for cinematic pearls to emerge. Those pearls may not be programmed at any other film festival, and in the quiet Swiss town of Nyon, a 15-minute train ride from Geneva, they amounted to a stunningly consistent lineup.
One of the most sparkling pearls in that lineup was the unclassifiable The Documentary Journey of Madame Anita Conti. Director Louise Hémon’s medium-length film relies on narration from a text by French explorer and photographer Anita Conti’s travel diary from her time on a fishing boat in open sea in 1952—along with an audio interview with Conti, 16mm footage from the expedition,...

The Doctor Who simultaneous global premiere arrives in May, and the episode titles for the season have now been revealed.
In addition, another guest star has been added to the cast. In the Julie Anne Robinson directed Space Babies, Golda Rosheuvel (Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story) joins Doctor Who as Jocelyn.
“It’s been amazing to see the whole world appreciate Golda’s talents, because of Bridgerton, and it’s been an absolute joy to invite her to Cardiff to help launch Ncuti and Millie’s first season,” said Russell T Davies, the Doctor Who showrunner.
New episodes will debut weekly across BBC iPlayer, BBC One and outside of the UK on Disney+ (where available), with the Steven Moffat-penned adventure Boom up next, followed by 73 Yards, Dot and Bubble, Rogue, and a two-part finale spread across two weeks, The Legend of Ruby Sunday and Empire of Death.

It’s the Rani. It’s always the Rani. Even when it definitely isn’t the Rani, well, it’s secretly the Rani.
That’s the running gag in the Doctor Who fandom every time it’s called upon to speculate about who or whatever is behind Something Mysterious and Evil happening on the show. If it’s not the Master, then it’s malevolent Time Lady the Rani. Monsters stealing time, cracks in the universe, milk going off even when kept in an adequately refrigerated container? It’s naughty scientist the Rani (even though it very rarely is).
As played by Kate O’Mara in season 22 and season 24, the character is a classic but little-seen Who villain whose reappearance on TV fans live both in eager anticipation and utter dread of. Four-part 1987 story “Time and the Rani” you see, is not popular.

This take on the first-century Iceni heroine looks like a home movie, and Olga Kurylenko’s lack of majesty in the lead role doesn’t help
Boudica, the Iceni queen who led an insurrection against the Roman colonisers in first-century Britain, is one of the great feminist icons from ancient history, but there are surprisingly few cinematic representations of her.
There was a British TV show from 1978 called Warrior Queen that had the great Siân Phillips daubed in woad, a just-ok film from 2003 also called Warrior Queen that starred Alex Kingston, and a smattering of others in various languages, mostly for TV. And, of course, there’s the utterly iconic segment in Horrible Histories where Queen B (Martha Howe-Douglas) sings a grungy ditty about how her bloody campaign.. But all that still leaves room for a great feature film about the toughest, most heroic gal to come out of Norfolk,...

In my other life, I am an Ancient History lecturer at a UK university, which means I am often giving my students recommendations for films and TV shows to watch about Ancient Rome. None of them are especially historically accurate (a totally historically accurate film would probably be a boring film) but as long as you don’t take anything in them too literally, they are a nice introduction to the world of ancient Rome. Gladiator might make Rome a Republic again about 1600 years too early, but it shows how the Colosseum functioned, trapdoors and all, very well. The Eagle’s history of the Ninth Legion and depiction of Iron Age Picts might be a bit iffy, but it gives you a taste of life in the Roman provinces. You get the idea.

Prime Video has released the official trailer for the second season of the comedy ‘Good Omens.’
Michael Sheen and David Tennant are back as Aziraphale and Crowley. Here the pair may have helped stop the Apocalypse, but that doesn’t appear to have done them any favours with Heaven or Hell.
Now they must re-team to solve a mystery that takes in all of heaven and hell – seems the archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) has gone missing.
Mark Gatiss, Steve Pemberton, Reece Shearsmith, Niamh Walsh and Derek Jacobi are all back for the new run. They’re joined this time by Nina Sosanya, Miranda Richardson, Dame Sian Phillips, Tim Downie, Pete Firman, Andi Osho and Alex Norton. Maggie Service, Quelin Sepulveda and Shelley Conn also star.
Neil Gaiman continues as executive producer and co-showruns, along with executive producer Douglas Mackinnon who also returned to direct.

Nearly 10 years after his death, Peter O’Toole is making a return to the screen in a BritBox documentary from Jim Sheridan.
The revered Irish director, known for narrative films including “My Left Foot” and “In the Name of the Father,” interviewed colleagues and family about the “Lawrence of Arabia” star for “Peter O’Toole: Along the Sky Road to Aqaba.” They range from Kenneth Branagh, Brian Cox, Anthony Hopkins, Derek Jacobi and Stephen Fry to ex-wife Siân Phillips and daughter Kate O’Toole. Each interview helps shed light on the actor’s complicated yet brilliant life and career.
O’Toole, who grew up in England with Irish heritage, was nominated for eight Oscars, winning an honorary Academy Award in 2003. The actor was also known for his stage work and fondness for alcohol.

This article contains spoilers for all of House of the Dragon season 1.
Author George R.R. Martin draws on lots of different things for inspiration when he writes his A Song of Ice and Fire series, which was adapted into Game of Thrones and now House of the Dragon. The influence of the medieval era on the history of Westeros is well known, from Henry I making his barons swear loyalty to his daughter Matilda just as Viserys I makes his lords swear loyalty to his daughter Rhaenyra in Fire & Blood (adapted into House of the Dragon), to the conflict between the Starks and the Lannisters in A Song of Ice and Fire that partly mirrors the conflict between the real life houses of York and Lancaster in the 1400s.
But there’s another semi-historical influence on Martin’s world that is not so often talked about. In 1934, Robert Graves’ novel I,...

Ignored, maligned and hammered out into an ‘Alan Smithee’ extended cut for TV, David Lynch’s outstanding Sci-fi epic arrives on 4K Ultra HD, finally achieving the visual opulence on home video that it had in 70mm prints at the end of 1984. The fractured, de-Lynched storyline can be argued over, but the amazing design and arresting characterizations never fail to impress — Lynch attracted a world-class cast of movie stars and used them well. Even if it’s described as a hundred fragmented scenes from a larger narrative, they’re superlative fragments. Lynch should have been authorized to make an alternate cut, his own completely personal ‘impressionist’ version of the Frank Herbert story.

Warner Bros has debuted a new trailer for the upcoming feel-good story ‘Dream Horse’ featuring Toni Collette with a Welsh accent.
The story follows Jan Vokes, a cleaner and bartender, who recruits her initially reluctant husband Brian and local accountant Howard Davies to help her bring together a syndicate of local people to breed a foal – which they name Dream Alliance. On the racetrack, he proves himself to be more than a match for the multi-million-pound racehorses he comes up against – a true working-class champion, taking on the establishment at their own game. But much more than this, Dream begins to alter the lives of everyone in the syndicate, not least Jan’s. He is everything to her: friend, confidant and an escape from a life of always putting other people’s needs first.
Directed by Euros Lyn the film also stars Damian Lewis, Owen Teale, Joanna Page, Karl Johnson,...

Here’s a first look at the trailer for director Denis Villeneuve’s highly anticipated Dune, the big-screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal bestseller.
A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.
And gosh, is this a great cast or what?!
Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac (the “Star Wars” franchise) Oscar nominee Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Zendaya, Chang Chen, David Dastmalchian, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, with Oscar nominee Charlotte Rampling,...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the best TV adaptation of a book/book series?
Daniel Fienberg (@TheFienPrint), The Hollywood Reporter
Ok, I listed like 50 answers for last week’s Guest Stars question and I’m determined not to cheat this week! Kinda. The answer is “Friday Night Lights,” but I acknowledge that there are caveats, because the NBC TV series was based on the feature film, which was based on Buzz Bissinger’s book, so is the show based on a book or based on a movie? Well, because Peter Berg adapted both, I’m gonna say they’re both based on the book, because really the only continuity...

Imelda Staunton. Photographed by David Rose. [Source]Here's Murtada on his favorite subject; British ladies of a certain age who delight on screen and stage.
Happy New Year! Some Brits usher in the new year celebrating their newly bestowed knighthoods. This year Queen Elizabeth II honors, among others, Idris Elba and David Oyelowo. There are different designations to the honor. For example Imelda Staunton became a Cbe i.e. not yet a Dame but well on her way. It’s obvious The Queen hasn’t ventured out to the theater in 2015 or Staunton would be Dame Squared for her triumphant Mama Rose alone.
This year’s newly minted Dames are British TV stalwart Barbara Windsor (EastEnders, the Carry On movies) and Welsh stage veteran Sian Phillips (Daniel Day Lewis’ mother in The Age of Innocence), who was once Mrs. Peter O’Toole.

The Queen''s New Year Honors list has been announced, and once again, several leading British actors have been awarded for their services to drama. Golden Globe nominees Idris Elba and David Oyelowo are both to be awarded an OBE. Elba, 43, known for his role in the hit BBC crime drama Luther, has described the honor as "beyond special," while Oyelowo, who played Martin Luther King Jr. in 2014's Selma, explained why the award has particular sentimental meaning. Having been given a £325 grant by Prince Charles' charity, the Prince's Trust, when Oyelowo was first pursuing his dream to become an actor,...

This is one of the reasons I love Scream Factory so much. The Doctor and the Devils is a film that I have never seen. I’ve heard it mentioned a couple of times, but never did the opportunity arise for me to have seen it. It’s weird, because it sounds right up my alley. Thankfully, on November 14th, Scream Factory will be dropping the film onto Blu-ray. Check out the press release below, and be sure to pre-order your copy by either clicking here to purchase on Shout!’s website, or here for Amazon.

BBC Two is 50 - the British Broadcasting Corporation's second eldest child hits the half-century mark today - Sunday, April 20.
Picking out the greatest shows from five decades of broadcasting seems like a near-impossible task, but never say that Digital Spy is easily cowed. These are - in our humble opinion - the channel's finest ever offerings.
BBC Two is 50: The Hour, Bottom and more shows to bring back
The rules are as follows: shows like Red Dwarf that originated on BBC Two are eligible, but shows better associated with another channel are not - say Top of the Pops, which aired on BBC One for the majority of its run but shifted to the sister channel for its final episodes.
Oh, and we're talking only original commissions - so no Us imports either. But even that barely narrows it down, so if you think there are any glaring omissions,...

Actor and producer who played Brad Majors in the original Rocky Horror Show in 1973 and Saffy's gay dad in Ab Fab
Christopher Malcolm, who has died of cancer aged 67, played Brad Majors in the original production of The Rocky Horror Show in 1973 and, as his life as an actor started to overlap with an interest in producing the shows themselves, he became, after co-producing the West End revival of Rocky Horror in 1990, the executive in charge of all subsequent worldwide productions.
His death came just a few days after his latest project, the revival of Oh What a Lovely War at Stratford East, opened to enthusiastic notices, probably sealing a West End transfer. Actor, terrible driver, parkour pioneer . . . there was a lot more to O'Toole than his 'hellraising' image allows
As soon as Peter O'Toole's death was announced, it was clear how posterity would remember him. We are now mourning "the actor and hellraiser Peter O'Toole", or possibly "the hellraising actor Peter O'Toole". But that description just scratches the surface. He was also …
1 A tiny bit eccentric. Like our beloved Queen, but with fewer flunkies to look after him, O'Toole rarely carried money or keys when he left home. "I just hope some bastard's in," he'd explain. When some bastard wasn't, he would have to break in.
2 Socially mobile. Born in Connemara, the self-styled "slum Mick" grew up in a particularly rough bit of Leeds. Several of his playmates went on to be hanged for murder. "I'm not from the working class," he used to say. "I come from the criminal classes.

“I’m not an actor, I’m a movie star.” Peter O’Toole intoned that line as Alan Swann in 1982 farce, “My Favorite Year.” This was the truth as irony, because the Irish born O’Toole was both a movie star and one of the notable actors of the British stage.
His memorable role as T.E. Lawrence in the Oscar winning Best Picture of 1962, “Lawrence of Arabia.” solidified his legend. Mr. O’Toole died Saturday in London after a long illness, according to his daughter Kate.

The star of David Lean’s Lawrence Of Arabia who earned eight Oscar nominations has died at Wellington hospital in London following a long illness. He was 81.
O’Toole was reportedly born in Ireland – there is some dispute over this and it is said his birthplace may in fact be Leeds – and despite his global fame and London residency remained very much a son of the country.
The Irish president Michael Higgins, a personal friend for several decades, led a list of tributes and called O’Toole “one of the giants of film and theatre.”
O’Toole served two years in the Navy before attending the Royal Academy Of Dramatic Art in the early 1950s. He cut his teeth with a series of major roles in regional theatre for several years and eventually landed his cinematic breakthrough as Te Lawrence in Lean’s 1962 classic Lawrence of Arabia, which earned him one of eight Academy Award nominations.

Peter O’Toole, arguably the most strikingly charismatic, most eerily handsome, most preternaturally gifted actor of his acting generation, died Saturday at a London hospital at age 81.
O’Toole was part of the 1954 graduating class of London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art along with Richard Burton, Albert Finney, and Alan Bates. After a supernova first decade — a 10-year run from 1958 to 1968 that included two stage Hamlets, two filmed Henry IIs, and an incandescent, career-defining title role in David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia — O’Toole let the momentum slip. Actor who shot to fame in David Lean's 1962 masterpiece and received eight Oscar nominations has died in hospital in London
The actor Peter O'Toole, who found stardom in David Lean's masterpiece Lawrence of Arabia, has died aged 81, his agent has said.
The acclaimed leading man who overcame stomach cancer in the 1970s passed away on Saturday at the Wellington hospital in London following a long illness, Steve Kenis said.
O'Toole announced last year he was stopping acting saying: "I bid the profession a dry-eyed and profoundly grateful farewell."
He said his career on stage and screen fulfilled him emotionally and financially, bringing him together "with fine people, good companions with whom I've shared the inevitable lot of all actors: flops and hits."
Early in his career O'Toole became emblematic of a new breed of hard-drinking Hollywood hellraiser.

London (AP) - Known on the one hand for his starring role in "Lawrence of Arabia," leading tribesmen in daring attacks across the desert wastes, and on the other for his headlong charges into the depths of drinking, Peter O'Toole was one of the acting world's most charismatic figures.
O'Toole, who died Saturday at age 81 after a long bout of illness, was fearsomely handsome, with burning blue eyes and a penchant for hard living, which long outlived his decision to give up alcohol. Broadcaster Michael Parkinson told Sky News television it was hard to be too sad about the news of his passing.
"Peter didn't leave much of life unlived, did he?" he said, chuckling.
A reformed - but unrepentant - hell-raiser, O'Toole long suffered from ill health. Always thin, he had grown wraithlike in later years, his famously handsome face eroded by years of hard drinking.

Raquel Welch wigs vs. Ray Harryhausen monsters: One Million Years B.C. [See previous post: "Ray Harryhausen: Special Effects Titan Dies."] Without Charles H. Schneer as producer, Ray Harryhausen created the visual effects for the 1966 camp classic One Million Years B.C. — though, admittedly, his work in that movie played second fiddle to Raquel Welch’s physical effects as a blonde-bewigged (?) cavewoman parading around Earth’s pre-history in a cleavage-enhancing fur bikini. Whereas in producer Hal Roach’s 1940 effort One Million B.C., lizards made up as dinosaurs made life difficult for Victor Mature and Carole Landis, in the creationist-style pre-history of the 1966 (sort-of) remake, Raquel Welch and fellow caveman John Richardson had to square off against Harryhausen’s stop-motion models of giant reptiles. (Photo: Raquel Welch One Million Years B.C.) [Please scroll down to check out TCM's beautiful Ray Harryhausen tribute.] Starring James Franciscus and featuring Earth vs. the Flying Saucers‘ Richard Carlson, The Valley of Gwangi (1969) was Harryhausen’s next-to-last mid-level effort. Philip Madoc in A Mind to Kill. Acorn Media DVD
Kieran Kinsella
The late Philip Madoc was a fantastically talented actor who specialized in playing dark and brooding characters. A familiar face on British TV, Madoc appeared in everything from Doctor Who to Dad’s Army but he saved his best performances for the crime drama A Mind to Kill. Two versions of the series were made with one being in English and the other in Madoc’s native Welsh tongue.
Madoc’s character was Detective Chief Inspector Noel Bain – an old-school detective who unhappily faces up to the fact that the world is a darker and scarier place than it was when he first walked his beat. Much to his chagrin, his daughter Hannah, (Ffion Wilkins) eventually decides to follow in his footsteps and become a police officer. The duo have a difficult relationship away from the office and...

A number of rejected former X Factor contestants will reportedly join Jade Richards in returning for the next series. Richards, who made Kelly Rowland cry with her performance of Adele's 'Someone Like You', was booted from the show by Rowland before the final 16, leading to a furious fan campaign to have her reinstated. The Sun reports that she will be back for another shot this year, and will be accompanied by fellow second-timers Carolynne Poole, Joe Cox, Melanie McCabe and Sian Phillips, who was kicked out of the show when she was refused a Us visa after admitting jail time. A source told the paper: "There are a lot of familiar (more)...

Actor who made his name at Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop and appeared in the Beatles films, making firm friends with the Fab Four
Victor Spinetti, who has died of cancer aged 82, was an outrageously talented Welsh actor and raconteur who made his name with Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop and found fame and fortune as a friend and colleague of the Beatles, appearing in three of their five films, and with Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor in Franco Zeffirelli's The Taming of the Shrew (1967).
It was while he was giving his brilliantly articulated and hilarious "turn" as the gobbledegook-shouting drill sergeant in Oh, What a Lovely War! in the West End in 1963 – he won a Tony for the performance when the show went to Broadway – that the Beatles visited him backstage and invited him to appear in A Hard Day's Night (1964).

Actors and comedians including Rob Brydon, Barbara Windsor and Britt Ekland pay their respects to veteran poet and raconteur
Actors and comedians have paid tribute to one of the best loved of their profession, the actor, poet, and peerless raconteur Victor Spinetti, who has died of cancer in a hospice in Monmouth aged 82.
Spinetti appeared in the first Beatles film, A Hard Day's Night, and in all of their subsequent films because they liked him so much. Sir Paul McCartney once described him as "the man who makes clouds disappear", and he insisted George Harrison told him: "You've got to be in all our films … if you're not in them me Mum won't come and see them – because she fancies you."
Rob Brydon, the actor and television presenter, and fellow Welshman, said Spinetti's death was terribly sad news.

Before HBO's fantastic Bruno Heller series "Rome," there was "I, Claudius," a British series so profoundly adult that it turned heads decades ago when it aired on PBS in the USA. This series was rated one of the .100 Best TV Shows of All Time. by Time magazine, this riveting tale of ambition, debauchery, and intrigue remains one of the most popular and acclaimed dramas in Masterpiece Theatre history. I Claudius. Acorn media
Written by Kieran Kinsella
In a list compiled by the British Film Institute of the 100 greatest British TV shows of all time, I Claudius ranked 12th. Earlier this year The Guardian newspaper chose I Claudius as the best British TV costume drama of all time and if that wasn’t enough the Roman era drama also won three BAFTA’s and an Emmy when it was originally broadcast no less than 35 years ago. Needless to say, Acorn Media’s March release of the complete series is likely to cause quite a stir.
Before I get into the mechanics of the story let me begin by talking a little about the cast. Cadfael star Derek Jacobi takes on the title role and performs brilliantly as both the young stuttering Claudius and the aged man reflecting on his life. His deranged predecessor Caligula is played by 1984 star John Hurt...
