Research shows that summer camps for kids with pediatric cancer can strengthen social skills and self-esteem and facilitate moments of needed respite.
Northwestern Mutual, through its Foundation and in collaboration with Lollipop Theater Network, recently hosted The Ultimate Camp-In, a one-of-a-kind at-home virtual camp experience bringing together hundreds of children and families affected by childhood cancer. Complete with star power from camp “counselors,” the Ultimate Camp-In was a memorable day of connection and carefree adventure for families facing similar challenges.
By collaborating with Lollipop Theater Network, a non-profit dedicated to bringing movies and entertainment to children in hospitals due to chronic or life-threatening illnesses, the pastime of camp was transformed into a virtual experience enjoyed in homes across the country, creating connection in the age of social distancing.
The event kicked off Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, a time to support those affected, while also raising awareness and funds for research and cures.

Playing Munkustrap, the story's main narrator, Robbie Fairchild isn't the biggest name or the most recognizable face in the cast of the upcoming film adaptation of Cats, but he just might be the cast member with the most relevant career so far. Fairchild is a veteran of the stage, starting out as a ballet dancer and working his way up the ranks before shifting gears into some high-profile musical theater roles. Here's what you should know about one of the film's breakout stars!
Although he's been dancing in several genres since childhood, Fairchild's early career focused primarily on ballet. He joined the New York City Ballet, one of the country's most prestigious dance companies, in 2006, and was promoted to principal dancer in 2009. Fairchild spent eight years with the Nycb before stepping away in 2017. Dance ran in his family: his older sister, Megan, is also a dancer with the Nycb, and he danced alongside his then-wife,...

1. “Grace and Frankie” Season 3 (available March 24)
Why Should I Watch It? If Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda aren’t reason enough — not to mention the rest of the cast, including Martin Sheen, Sam Waterston, and June Diane Raphael — then know this: “Grace and Frankie” is a living embodiment of progressive beliefs. Not only does the show cover an array of taboo topics from the dramatic weight of right-to-die debates to casually breaking cultural stigmas surrounding post-menopause sex, but “Grace and Frankie” consists of half-hour episodes that don’t adhere to comedic or dramatic formulas. The tone is unique to the series, respecting the characters and building to moments of great power and great humor. So give it a try.
Best Episode: We haven’t seen Season 3 yet — Netflix, please send screeners at your earliest convenience — so we’ll simply say this: Midway through last year, when debating the best TV...

Tiler tells some great stories from her and her husband Robbie Fairchild's younger years. We also talk about the differences between being in a ballet company and working on Broadway. The weekend is chalk full of new Specialty releases, though most will likely be low performers in terms of dollars at the box office. Entertainment One is opening Nicolas Cage and Hayden Christensen starrer Outcast with limited runs and will likely find tepid returns at the theatrical box office, though it may shine in the digital/on-demand space where it will also bow this weekend. Documentary Ballet 422 (Magnolia Pictures), meanwhile, has had solid buzz heading into the weekend and should score well in its niche market. Monterey Media is hoping to have traction with stars Wes Bentley, Vincent Piazza and Amber Tamblyn as it opens 3 Nights In The Desert in theaters and on-demand, while Freestyle Releasing is targeting the rom-com crowd for its debut, One Small Hitch. "Ballet 422," directed by Jody Lee Lipes, opens in New York at the Film Society of Lincoln Center, and the Landmark Sunshine Cinema, on Friday, February 6th, 2015.
Have you ever wondered how a ballet gets created, the costumes get designed, the timing is mastered, and the pointe shoes get sewn on?
"Ballet 422" transports you backstage to the making of the New York City 422nd ballet, “Paz de la Jolla,” set to the musical composition by Bohuslav Martinu from 1950, “Sinfonietta La Jolla.”
Founded in 1948, the NYC Ballet staffs a full orchestra, costume shop, lighting department, production crew and 91 full time dancers. 25 year old, Justin Peck, has been a member of the NYC Ballet since 2007, and was commissioned to choreograph the only new ballet in the 2013 winter season, with only 2 months to prepare.
Justin Peck: “My whole process of choreography is based on the music exposing the details, the complexities, and the textures of the orchestra.
Observe the elite principal dancers (Sterling Hyltin, Tiler Peck, and Amar Ramasar), practice their:
Pas de Chat’s (‘the step of the cat’ The dancer jumps sideways, and while in mid-air, bends both legs up (two retirés) bringing the feet up as high as possible, with knees apart),
Grand Jete’s (a split in the air),Pas de trois (a dance by three dancers),Passe’s (placing or passing the working foot near the knee of the supporting leg. When passing by the knee, the foot passes from front to back or back to front and then may slide down the supporting leg to the floor or transition into a position such as arabesque or attitude), Arabesque’s (A body position in which a dancer stands on one leg (the supporting leg) with the other leg (the working leg) turned out and extended behind the body, with both legs held straight), and Assemble’s (A jump that lands on two feet).
Two months, two weeks, one week, as the premiere of “Paz de la Jolla” draws closer, the film reflects back on all the hard work and practice rehearsals that it took to lead up to the big night.
How will it be received?
Heavenly!

Two years ago, choreographer and New York City Ballet dancer Justin Peck needed someone to write the score for a new project and asked Sufjan Stevens — a musician with a penchant for flourescent stagewear, Hula-Hoops, and songs about Illinois. That collaboration resulted in Year of the Rabbit, showcasing the refreshingly youthful, inventive choreography that made Peck a wunderkind of the ballet world (and you can get a close-up look at his work process in Ballet 422, a highly anticipated documentary by Jody Lee Lipes debuting at the Tribeca Film Festival), with a rollicking all-string score by Stevens that was surprisingly well matched. Now they’ve put together a new piece, Everywhere We Go, which premieres May 8 at City Ballet, and it's an even more ambitious task for Stevens: a nine-movement orchestral score. For a sneak peek at both the dance and music, Lipes directed this short film, featuring principal dancers Tiler Peck,...

The New York Philharmonic has announced that New York City Ballet principal dancers Robert Fairchild and Tiler Peck will perform in the staged production of Rodgers amp Hammerstein's Carousel, February 27-March 2, 2013. Robert Fairchild will portray the Carnival Boy, and Tiler Peck will portray Louise. With original choreography by Warren Carlyle, Mr. Fairchild and Ms. Peck will dance the pas de deux ballet in Act II. Reflecting this production's focus on Carousel's music, the ballet will be the sole fully choreographed scene. These performances mark Warren Carlyle's first time choreographing Mr. Fairchild and Ms. Peck, and represent Mr. Carlyle, Mr. Fairchild, and Ms. Peck's Philharmonic debuts. Art New York’s cultural epicenter shifts that much closer to its geographic center this week, when Lincoln Center hosts dueling events on October 7. For jazz lovers, there’s the public listening party for the Savory Collection, a recently discovered, top-shelf set of 1930s recordings by Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Fats Waller, and others. And for ballet enthusiasts, the New York City Ballet holds their annual Fall Gala. Between beloved works by George Balanchine, a new ballet premieres: Plainspoken is choreographed by principal dancer Benjamin Millepied with music by David Lang. Dancing outliers turn out to be much like others Malcolm Gladwell has identified: they emerge from the forest, not necessarily the tall trees. They are testing the limits, yet not pointedly rebelling. They are just doing things their own way. Tiler Peck. (C) Paul Kolnik. When the curtain goes up on Outlier, the new ballet by Brit Wayne McGregor at the Architecture of Dance Festival at the New York City Ballet, the reddish target backdrop immediately recalls abstract outlier Jasper Johns. The costumes and sets are minimal and reference color theory. Painter Mark Rothko--you can see his outlying in Red-- might have plotted them out. And the concentric circles of the target are echoed in the music--Thomas Ades challenging Concentric Paths concerto for Violin and in the choreography, particularly a segment towards the end which has...

After a long day spent trying to knock some sense into those sentences, I rode the R train down to the Not Fade Away Gallery for the publication party of Allen Tannenbaum's photo extravanganza "New York in the 70s," a bash that featured a sexy DJ, the "sexy DJ" being an enviable niche to fill in any decade. No sooner do I thread through the initial throng than whom should I run into but Danny Fields, a much-decorated veteran of Cbgb's but so much more. Former loftmate of Edie Sedgwick and co-manager of The Ramones, among his many other feats and exploits, Danny is one of those legends so legendary that other legends consider him a legend. Recognizing me despite the distancing years, Danny said, "Let's hug like the high school kids on the front page of The New York Times." And so we did, even though neither one of...

So there I was, minding my own cheeseburger at my favorite neighborhood diner and mingling with the common folk, when I see my own boldfaced name leaping from the salmon-colored page: Guests invited into Graydon Carter’s revamped Monkey Bar on East 54th Street for intimate “friends and family” dinners this past weekend were already raving—those big red booths are fantastic! “If you were sitting in the booths, you could watch everyone and not even have to turn your head!” said one publishing industry guest, who attended a dinner on Saturday, March 21, and asked not to be identified. The booths faced outward along the upper level and lower levels, making it easy to ogle fellow diners. Look, there’s Dick Cavett! Mr. Cavett was accompanying Conde Nast editors Ingrid Sischy and Sandy Brant. Nearby, Vanity Fair contributing editors James Wolcott and Laura Jacobs were dining with ballet dancers Damian Woetzel and Heather Watts,...
