TORONTO -- Unions for the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. on Wednesday called for increased government funding for the public broadcaster, which is beset by a pension fund shortfall and threatened job cuts. The call came a day after CBC CEO Robert Rabinovitch told the House of Commons heritage committee in Ottawa that the public broadcaster would have to cut programming to provide for CAN$43 million ($32.8 million) in employee pension payments. "The president of the CBC has warned of further cutbacks in programming and staff because of pension fund woes and a CAN$10 million ($7.6 million) revenue slice from the federal budget," Peter Murdoch, vp media at the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union, representing about 2,300 CBC engineers and journalists, said in a statement. "We call on Mr. Paul) Martin to end the uncertainty with a clear statement that he will restore adequate funding for the CBC."...
