Ipecac Recordings, the indie label co-founded by Greg Werckman and Mike Patton, is celebrating its 25th anniversary by reissuing three Fantômas albums on vinyl.
Werckman and Patton founded Ipecac in 1999 to release the self-titled debut by Fantômas — the experimental rock supergroup featuring Patton alongside Buzz Osborne, Dave Lombardo, and Trevor Dunn. The idea was to retain all creative control following Patton’s major label experiences with Faith No More and Mr. Bungle, and Ipecac has remained a vital and active underground label since its formation.
Expanding out from Fantômas, Ipecac has since released albums by the likes The Melvins, Mr. Bungle, Isis, Faith No More, Eagles of Death Metal, Dälek (whose debut Negro Necro Nekros is also being reissued for the 25th anniversary), and many more.
“A label does not last 25 years without consumer support,” said Werckman via a press release. “We are not the biggest or hippest record label,...

Former Mr. Bungle member Theo Lengyel has been arrested in connection with the homicide of his girlfriend Alice “Alyx” Kamakaokalani Herrmann, a resident of Capitola, California.
Lengyel was taken into custody by the Capitola Police Department on Tuesday (January 2nd) after previously being named a “person of interest” in the investigation.
Relatives of the victim reported her missing on December 12th after a week-long lapse in contact. A missing-person investigation was launched, and her vehicle was then found in front of Lengyel’s home.
According to investigators, Lengyel did not cooperate with police and was subsequently named a suspect when “it became clear that foul play was involved,” per a press release from the Capitola Police Department. Lengyel was also reported to have traveled from El Cerrito, California, to Portland, Oregon, in the days surrounding Herrmann’s disappearance.

Former Mr. Bungle member Theo Lengyel is currently a “person of interest” in the disappearance of his girlfriend Alice “Alyx” Kamakaokalani Herrmann. According to the El Cerrito Police Department in California, Lengyel “has not cooperated with the police investigation.”
Lengyel was a member of Mr. Bungle from 1985 through 1996, playing on their early 1986 demo The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny, as well as their studio albums Mr. Bungle (1991) and Disco Volante (1995), among other releases. The multi-instrumentalist primarily played saxophone for the band, as well as clarinet and keyboards.
He left the group in 1996 due to creative differences, and is not part of Mr. Bungle’s current reunion lineup of classic members Mike Patton, Trey Spruance, and Trevor Dunn alongside Scott Ian and Dave Lombardo.
The case is being treated as a “missing person / homicide investigation,” with the police bulletin reading as follows:

As the singer of Slipknot and Stone Sour, as well as solo artist, Corey Taylor has rubbed shoulders with many of his own personal heroes in the business. But his encounters with Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl and late Motörhead legend Lemmy Kilmister are among the most memorable.
In a new interview with Classic Rock magazine, the Slipknot frontman fanboy’d out on some of the famous rockstars he’s met over the years, most of which entail humorous — and in Lemmy’s case, downright raunchy — anecdotes.
Taylor had only met the Motörhead mastermind in passing prior to running into him in the kitchenette at the German headquarters of guitar company Gibson. As Taylor recounted, while the two were “smoking out of the window like high-schoolers, just being dicks,” Lemmy proceeded to tell what Taylor claims to be “one of the filthiest jokes” he’s ever heard in his life.

A surprise Fantômas reunion took place Wednesday night (May 24th) in Oakland, California, during the final show of Mr. Bungle’s “Geek Show” tour with Melvins.
The reunion wasn’t too far out of the realm of possibility considering three of the band’s four members — Mike Patton, Trevor Dunn, and Dave Lombardo — are currently in Mr. Bungle. Once Buzz Osborne of Melvins took the stage, the supergroup’s lineup was complete, along with the bonus additions of Bungle guitarists Trey Spruance and Scott Ian.
Osborne sat in with Mr. Bungle for a rendition of The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny Demo track “Sudden Death” before the group launched into Fantômas’ cover of Henri Mancini‘s “Experiment in Terror” (featured on the band’s 2001 album The Director’s Cut). Fan footage captured the performance, which went off without a hitch as the band nailed the intricate loud-soft dynamics.

After teasing a snippet of their debut single “Harvest” last week, Empire State Bastard have now unleashed the full track. The outfit features singer Simon Neil and touring guitarist Mike Vennart of the Scottish band Biffy Clyro, along with legendary thrash-metal drummer Dave Lombardo.
“Harvest” is a wonderfully chaotic track that ranges from extreme grindcore screams to Pixies-inspired spoken-word verses. It’s a helluva debut single, hopefully giving us a taste of what’s to come on a potential full-length album, with the band having inked a deal with Roadrunner Records.
With Biffy Clyro one of the most popular rock bands in the UK, Empire State Bastard have already sold out a run of upcoming shows in Glasgow (March 26th), Manchester (March 27th), and London (March 28th). They’re also set to play France’s massive Hellfest in June. Their touring lineup is rounded out by bassist Naomi Macleod (Bitch...

Legendary thrash drummer Dave Lombardo has announced his debut album, Rites of Percussion, arriving May 5th via Ipecac Recordings. The lead single “Journey of the Host” can be streamed below.
The idea for a Lombardo solo album has origins as far back as 1998, when it was suggested by the drummer’s current Mr. Bungle bandmate Mike Patton.
“He introduced me to Tito Puente’s Top Percussion album,” Lombardo said via a press release. “I was already familiar with Tito and was a bit shocked that Patton was so musically diverse, and that he surrounded himself with musicians of the same mindset. That inspired me. I have had ideas that I’ve recorded on cassette over the years, but Patton kept insisting that I had to do a ‘drum album.’ So, the idea behind the album is years in the making. I just had to find the right time—for me—to do it.

Even in a fast-moving film like Jordan Peele’s “Nope,” there are some easter eggs you just can’t ignore — and one that has caught more than a few viewers’ eyes is the bizarre preponderance of characters wearing T-shirts featuring alt-rock bands from the late ‘80s and early ‘90s.
It starts with the character Angel (Brandon Perea) wearing a Wipers T-shirt — the legendary Portland band beloved by Kurt Cobain. Then you see one with a Mr. Bungle logo — the oddball California group Faith No More singer Mike Patton was originally in, and which he pursued as a parallel career. And by the time you see Emerald (Keke Palmer) prominently wearing a Jesus Lizard T-shirt (above) and O.J. (Daniel Kaluuya) wearing a Rage Against the Machine one — and then, for a brief moment, Butthole Surfers and Earth tees flash by — it’s like, “Ok, these aren’t your garden-variety Nirvana tees.

To the surprise of everyone on his team, Mike Patton wants to talk about how his life derailed over the last few years. “It’s funny because my manager and publicist were like, ‘Do you want to talk about mental health [in an interview]?’” he says. “’They’re gonna ask you these questions. King Garbage turn trucking into a moody, melodramatic piano rocker on “Monster Truck,” a track from their upcoming album, Heavy Metal Greasy Love.
“My baby drives a monster truck,” the duo sings together over pounding piano chords. “Too much is never enough/No fast cars or diamond rings, only heavy-metal, greasy things.” Over the course of five minutes, the song becomes a long-haul journey of its own with soulful horns, some funky Wurlitzer, postmodern echoes, and a noise-rock freakout flying by faster than white lines in the middle of blacktop.

One day in the late Nineties, Dave Lombardo, the metal drumming powerhouse best known for bringing a tornado-like fury to Slayer’s early thrash masterpieces, was driving from San Francisco to his home in Los Angeles. On the way, he threw on a recording of an unusual gig he’d just taken part in: a performance of a so-called game piece by John Zorn, in which the category-defying composer assembled a group of improvisers and staged a spontaneous sonic happening according to a series of rules, cards, and gestures.

Jimmy Buffett capped off his rendition of the National Anthem before Sunday’s Nfc Championship game in New Orleans with an emphatic mic drop.
Buffett, a lifelong Saints fan, delivered a straightforward, near-recited rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” but it was the “Margaritaville” singer’s actions after “And the home of the brave” that made him go viral: With microphone still in hand, Buffett lifted his right arm and dropped the mic near the 50-yard line.

One of the wilder musical episodes this writer has heard in 2018 gets going a little more than three minutes into “Bovicidal,” the opening track on a new album by guitarist Brandon Seabrook’s eponymous trio. As double-bassist Henry Fraser sets up a steady pulse, the leader solos over top, moving from tight, twitchy, spasm-like phrases to sharp, stabbing chords, while cellist Daniel Levin adds his rough, sawing bow work. Rock has long been a breeding ground for weirdos. From the crazy prog concept albums of the 70s, to the aggressive post-punk groups of the 80s, to the alt-rock oddballs of the 90s, rock music has never shied away from the surreal or the strange. Perhaps its the genre’s outsider status that has allowed such unusual acts to prosper. Or maybe it just attracts nutters.
There are a few bands, however, that go that little bit further than most into the realms of the insane. They take the genre beyond “a bit bizarre” and into seriously mind-boggling territory. These are bands that simultaneously make audiences utterly confused and completely enthralled. They inspire humour, intrigue and a general response that amounts to “Wtf?!”

The 15 weirdest bands to ever grace a stage are included here. There’s the unclassifiable genre jumpers Ween, the clashing sonic fusions of Praxis and Naked City,...

Film scores are pretty ephemeral to a large chunk of the movie-going populace, where music isn’t noticeable unless a triumphant fanfare or sweeping ballad draws enough attention to itself. So if scoring is already the film industry’s unappreciated middle child, how silly is a list about ones that haven’t been released yet? Very silly. Oftentimes, composers don’t even sign with a project until well into production, so speculating on the best film music of 2015, like any year, forces one to work with what’s known. Sound on Sight will offer more in-depth analysis on the most buzzed about music as the year rolls on but for now, here are the ten movie scores I’m most excited to hear in 2015.
10. The Walk — Alan Silvestri
Alan Silvestri’s last great score was for a TV show, and his last great film score was for one of the more forgettable Marvel entries.

When Bay Area metal experimentalists Faith No More reunited for a world tour in 2009, many fans assumed new recordings would follow. Well, better late than never. The group -- frontman Mike Patton, drummer Mike Bordin, keyboard player Roddy Bottum, bassist Bill Gould, and guitarist Jon Hudson -- are in the midst of recording their first full-length record since 1997’s "Album of the Year," with April 2015 as the projected release date. Longtime lead guitarist Jim Martin is not taking part in the reunion. In anticipation of the album's release, Fnm will drop a limited edition 7-inch single featuring the new song “Motherf*cker” on Record Store Day’s Black Friday event on November 28). The B-side will feature a remix by J.G. Thirlwell (Foetus). The vinyl single will be limited to 5000 copies, but will then be released digitally on December 9. "We’ve always shared a chemistry between ourselves that’s unique to this band,...

Don't be deceived by the goofy title; the new full-length album from Italy's Destrage is armed with twisted, face-melting metal, wrapped tightly around themes of horror, violence, oppression and death. Our first proper introduction to the band came early this year in the form of the music video for “My Green Neighbour,” a kick-ass ode to the living dead dramatized by a pair of zombies competing in the 5K Warrior Dash obstacle course. We followed up with our World Premiere of “Purania,” a creepy animated mini-epic depicting a terrifying near-future dystopia. It's finally time to check out Destrage's third studio album in its entirety, and it turns out all the positive advance buzz is well-deserved; early releases Urban Being and The King is Fat 'N' Old are impressive displays of their vast talent, but in the end they're mere appetizers for the musical feast they've brought to the table here.

With every awards season comes a flood of “best of” compilations and top ten lists, but film scores can be tricky in that department. After all, different composers are operating on different levels, each one working toward a separate goal in his or her respective picture. Brian Tyler aims for something propulsive and heroic in Iron Man 3, while Saving Mr. Banks’ score apparently features Thomas Newman doing his best Thomas Newman impersonation. Lists can be tough when scores operate so independently of one another
So without further ado, I present my favorite film scores from 2013. Unranked:
Philomena – Alexandre Desplat
Saying Alexandre Desplat likes himself a mean waltz is like saying Johnny Depp likes himself a little eye makeup: they’re both gross understatements. Scoring Stephen Frears’ loose adaptation of Philomena Lee’s search for the son she was forced to give up at birth, Desplat makes his affinity abundantly clear with the title track,...

Good day, dwellers of the devil.s basement. Are you guys ready for Devil.s Due coming out later this week? Yeah, me either. Fortunately there are much more interesting and original films hitting theaters and VOD sites over the next few months. And two of them include Dan Fogler and an evil clown, which were formerly assumed to be the same thing. There's another found footage movie coming out this year, Mark Neveldine's The Vatican Tapes, which will center on a leaked video of an exorcism that goes extremely wrong. While these kinds of films usually rely on practical sound effects and deep booming noises for their soundscape, The Vatican Tapes will receive a score composed by bonkers musician Mike Patton, lead singer of Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, and about a dozen other side projects. That fact alone has me 20% more excited about this movie than I...

9. Stories We Tell – Sarah Polley

7. Her – Spike Jonze
6. Short Term 12 – Destin Cretton
5. The Act of Killing – Joshua Oppenheimer
I don’t know how Oppenheimer managed to find and befriend Anwar Congo and his merry band of genocidal murders, but his mind melting expose of Indonesia’s not-so-distant history of government backed mass murder is as outlandish as the giant fish shaped restaurant that graces the film’s poster. Asking death squad leaders to reenact their self-esteemed atrocities in the style of their favorite American movies seems at first highly inappropriate and possibly dangerous, yet they take up the challenge with glee. In doing, the buried remnants of an empathic human heart begin to surface in the faces of an old man, now a grandfather, whose calloused shell of empty headed pride has finally broken in a profound,...

Was 2013 a weak year for film scores? I feel like it was. At least in terms of the scores that Oscar's music branch would pay attention to. I mean, four of my favourite scores of the year aren't even eligible! They would be Great Expectations (Richard Hartley), A Touch of Sin (Giong Lim), Lore (Max Richter - my no. 1 from 2012, but not released in Us until this year), and Only God Forgives (Cliff Martinez). Also not eligible for whatever reasons are Lone Survivor (Stephen Jablonsky), Frozen, Inside Llewyn Davis (T-Bone Burnett), and Nebraska (Mark Orton) - sorry Anne Marie!
I'm sure there is plenty of excellent music featured amongst this year's 141 (the documentary win this year's bragging rights, then) eligible scores, but Oscar will only look at about 10 or 12. Sorry Joseph Bishara - your abrasive strings on Insidious: Chapter 2 and The Conjuring just won't factor despite their effectiveness. Sorry...

Still suffering from neck ache on a Monday following a gig on Friday, it’s hard to establish whether it’s a case of getting old, or just a really good gig. For Dillinger Escape Plan in Cardiff’s Great Hall though, November 1st, it’s definitely a case of the latter. Though, it might be a bit of the first too, or that after 23 years I’ve just never honed a good headbanging technique.
Anyway, it’s the third time I’ve seen Dillinger now, and before I start swooning all over the place, it’s Three Trapped Tigers up first. Unfortunately, due to some early doors and set times, we’ve missed Maybeshewill who are normally ever reliable for putting on a solid set on account of playing as a tight unit and sporting some generally stunning songs. So it’s Three Trapped Tigers we’re in time for.

Although he's most famously known as the drummer for iconic masked metallers Slipknot, Joey Jordison has also been a regular FEARnet favorite thanks to his many macabre side projects – including a stretch on the road with Rob Zombie and the reunion of legendary shock-rock unit Murderdolls, which he reanimated a few years ago with co-founder Wednesday 13. Jordison is still active with Slipknot, of course, but during a lengthy offline period (partly due to the death of bassist Paul Gray in 2010), he turned his creative energies from that band and focused instead on forming the industrial-metal supergroup Scar The Martyr – who have just unleashed their mammoth self-titled debut album. “I was working on new Slipknot material but I had to shelve it and wait until we all know we’re getting back together,” says Jordison. “But I couldn’t stop writing! I stayed in the studio because I had so many...

Derek Cianfrance’s latest drama The Place Beyond the Pines is a towering achievement for the young filmmaker, quickly becoming the year’s best film by a landslide, thanks to Cianfrance’s epic scope, pacing and lasting direction that leaves the film sitting with you long after it’s over. Ryan Gosling provides another top-tier performance, as Bradley Cooper finally delivers “the one” that we’ve all been waiting for, plus a dozen scattered supporting roles that range from surprisingly good to downright impressive. The Place Beyond the Pines is absolutely perfect.

Surrealist art-rock group The Fuxedos are known for going all-out with wild costumes, makeup and insane theatrics in their performances, which often employ horror and Grand Guignol elements to maximize the insanity. They've made memorable appearances on Comedy Central and The Dr. Demento Show, and shared billing with notables like Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh, industrial band Nitzer Ebb and experimental metallers Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. Fuxedos frontman Danny Shorago created and stars in the short film Mimsy, based around the track “The Jellybean Song” from the band's self-titled album. It's kind of hard to describe what goes on here, but suffice to say it's one of the most jaw-droppingly Wtf clips you'll see this year. The song and visuals are reminiscent of enigmatic art-rock unit The Residents, crossed with Mike Patton's notorious band Mr. Bungle... but that doesn't quite do this one justice. Enough talk. Yes, we know: we’ve been reviewing too many blockbusters. Ricky, Simon and Josh are just as bored with ‘splosions as you are, so for the next few weeks, expect a renewed focus on slightly smaller pictures. This week, a catch-up on two directors who go big in their follow-ups to breakouts: first up, Jeff Nichols moves on from the family psycho-drama of Take Shelter with a rambling Southern coming-of-age tale, Mud; then, Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine) goes even bigger with a generation-spanning crime saga, The Place Beyond the Pines. Beware of spoilers on that one.

Featuring two members of notorious alt-metal unit Dog Fashion Disco (frontman Todd Smith and guitarist Jasan Stepp), Maryland-based “psychedelic metal” band Polkadot Cadaver essentially carries on the former group's bizarre and experimental aesthetic, with the same emphasis on macabre themes. They've toured with FEARnet faves like Wednesday 13, Wayne Static, and William Control, and this week they made “The Devil's Dozen” on Sirius Xm's station Liquid Metal. I'm kind of surprised they haven't broken bigger among horror, metal and dark rock fans, but I'm gonna do my best to improve that situation here. Their third album, which goes by the magnificently tasteless handle Last Call in Jonestown (following the equally warped but not nearly as heavy 2011 release Sex Offender), is a prime example of their dark, aggressive and slightly schizo sound. The band dubs this project “heavy as Zeus's balls,” and I think that's as good a summation of their sound...

When I first came across this Finnish quartet via the music video “The End of Prom Night,” they were still experimenting with adding touches of horror imagery to a more mainstream brand of poppy post-hardcore – much in the mode of Black Veil Brides, but with a more playful dynamic. This year, I found the band stirring shock rock, horror punk, alt-metal and dark carnival ingredients into the stew for their new album, which goes by the whopper of a title Featuring Dr. Gruesome and the Gruesome Gory Horror Show, and for a split second I wasn't sure I was listening to the same guys... but I did like what I was hearing so far, so I dug deeper. When I caught the single “Will You Meet Me in the Graveyard?” with its accompanying lyric video packed with sick scenes from dozens of horror movies, the band finally landed my undivided attention.
