Le météore (English title: The Meteor)
Written by François Delisle
Directed by François Delisle
Canada, 2013
Narration is one of the great issues of contention amongst movie goers, movie buffs and especially film critics. When is it utilized in the right manner to convey ideas and plot points not visualized on screen and when it is redundant and uninspired? Far more people than one might imagine fall into the category of those who would wish narration away if they could. It therefore begs the question of what those same people would think of a film which was entirely dependent on narration, not just because it revealed crucial plot points or was a significant presence among other methods of communicating information, but because all of the film’s dialogue, without exception, was transmitted to the audience via off screen narration.
In François Delisle’s latest project, Le météore, there is not a...

One of my favorite parts of the Sundance Film Festival is the Park City at Midnight movie line-up. This is where they put on a lot of the horror, sci-fi, comedy and other genre type films. They've also announced the movies that will be a part of the Spotlight and New Frontier sections.
Once again it looks like we've got a lot of solid films to look forward to. Of course there's going to be a few duds in the mix, but for the most part this looks like it's going to be an exciting year at Sundance. I can't wait to watch these movies!
Look over the list, read about the films, and let us know which movies sound interesting to you that you'd like to more know about!

Sundance Film Festival 2013 announced its initial line-up last night, with a very promising slew of films competing in the Us and World Dramatic and Documentary categories, as always.
Tonight, we have more news from Park City, Ut, with the announcement of the films that will be screening in the Spotlight, Park City at Midnight, and New Frontier categories.
Rising young star, Alice Englert (Ginger & Rosa, Beautiful Creatures), will be heading to the festival in the Park City at Midnight category with Jeremy Lovering’s horror, In Fear, which has a very tense and promising synopsis.
Ben Wheatley’s Sightseers will be getting its long-awaited Us premiere, having debuted at Cannes earlier this year, and been earning critics’ praise ever since. Steve Oram and Alice Lowe co-wrote the film and star in the leads, and with the ever-brilliant Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), there’s...

From the opening frame Wetlands commands our attention. A naked, Marie (Pascale Bussières) walks through an open field and down to the wetlands, in the blistering summer heat of a Quebec dairy farm. Guy Édoin’s feature film debut is a rare find; a simple, yet captivating story masterfully constructed. So much is left unspoken, secret and isolated for much of the film’s first act. When bits are revealed it is not sensationalized, even if we are potentially watching the makings of someone who is seriously disturbed coming into his own.
We are introduced to 14-year-old Simon (Gabriel Maillé); he masturbates in a tree overlooking a field. Living in isolation, imposed by his parents as well as the profession he is not only sexually challenged but frustrated, unable to come to terms with an identity. Partly due to cold relationship with his father, Jean (Luc Picard) – who Simon later kills in an “accident,...

The great thing about international film festivals is the sheer breadth and variety of projects that they allow audiences to engage with, giving you the opportunity to discover cinematic gems from around the world that would never have made it anywhere near your local multiplex.
Mourning for Anna – a title that hits the nail right on the head – is no easy sell. While there will no doubt be those who marveled at its skeletal story and honest portrayal of the grieving process, I found no such classic in this offering from director Catherine Martin – a French language ode to misery.
The film opens with a minimalist animation, effectively foreshadowing the slight characterization and sketchy plotting that will befall the feature proper. Anna (Sheila Jaffe) is an accomplished violinist who we meet in the midst of concert as she harmonizes an intimidating rendition of Bach. From the audience her adoring mother beams up at the spectacle,...

Unlike last year's two filmmaker/film horse race between Denis Villeneuve's Polytechnique and Xavier Dolan's J'ai tué ma mere, this year it was all "Villeneuve" and "Incendies". Repeating his wins in all the same categories it won at the Canadian Oscars (Genies) this week (this includes Editing, Screenplay, Best Cinematography by the excellent André Turpin, Best Actress in Lubna Azabal (who forced here co-star Melissa Desormeaux-Poulin to give her own thank you speech). These wins more than makes up for his loss last year when Villeneuve won the Best Director honor for Polytechnique, but lost in the Best Film category to J'ai tué ma mere. The predictable 13th edition also saw a Genie-Jutra winner from Barney's Version and in the Animated Film category, the Nfb (naturally) supported Theodore Ushev added a Jutra to his Genie for Lipsett Diaries. Best Film/meilleur film 10 1/2 - Pierre Gendron (Zoofilms) Les amours imaginaires - Xavier Dolan,...

The nominees for the 31st Annual Genie Awards, Canada’s answer to the Oscars, were unveiled at simultaneous press conferences in Montreal and Toronto yeseterday. After being snubbed by the major Hollywood awards, only receiving 1 nomination and win for Paul Giamatti at the Golden Globes, Barney’s Version has been highly recognized by Canadian audiences. This is no surprise as its source material is a novel from beloved Canadian treasure Mordecai Richler and the film was partially shot in Montreal. Barney’s VersionIncendies leads the pack with 11 nominations including Best Motion Picture and populating most of the acting categories including one for Paul Giamatti for a Performace by an Actor in a Leading Role and Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for Dustin Hoffman. The first film by Canadian playwright Michel Monty, Une vie qui commence will come out in theatres on January 21 in Quebec.
