If you are a comic book reader who has a long flight coming up, writer Jimmy Palmiotti has one humble suggestion. He is offering hundreds of pages’ worth of his comics at a steep discount as part of a sale that see proceeds go to the World Wildlife Fund.
“It can get you from Japan and back from the east coast,” Palmiotti says with a laugh of the hefty reading material, available via the service Humble Bundle, which allows buyers to adjust how much of the proceeds to go charity and how much go to creators like Palmiotti.
Among them is Random Acts of Violence, which Jay Baruchel adapted as a feature in 2019. Another book in the batch was also in development as a movie: the crime drama Back to Brooklyn.

Cartoonist Jeff Smith, beloved for his popular indie comic book epic “Bone,” suffered a heart attack this past Sunday and has canceled his book tour for the remainder of this year. The news about Smith, 63, was first shared by representatives from Smith’s own Cartoon Books publishing company, including Smith’s wife.

This was the year that San Diego Comic-Con was supposed to collapse. After all, with Hollywood studios pulling out and stars not able to promote their work, all due to the double whammy of the actors and writers strikes, why would people even bother to attend?
Well, about 150,000 attendees did, indeed, show up. There were no mass hotel cancellations nor mass refunds issued for badges, which were purchased months in advance. And an interesting thing happened on the way to the Comic-Con apocalypse. There was a renewed focus on comics and other graphic arts, even as Hollywood showed up in a diminished capacity.
“This year, more than ever, it felt like the real focus was the talent behind the origins of a lot of their entertainment,” says Jimmy Palmiotti, a writer-artist who has worked for Marvel and DC and created the comic Painkiller Jane, which was adapted into a SyFy series in 2007.

The internet has gone Gaga for Harley Quinn in “Joker: Folie à Deux.”
As a last-minute Valentine’s Day gift, writer-director Todd Phillips released the first image of Stefani Germanotta, better known as Lady Gaga, in character as Harleen Quinzel, better known as Harley Quinn. The great DC character will likely play a psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum, where she falls in love with “Mr. J.”, Joaquin Phoenix returning to his Oscar-winning role as Arthur Fleck (better known as Joker).
Gaga’s Harley, based on this image, doesn’t have any of the white makeup or domino mask, but has her hair pulled back in a forceful manner and has Quite an extreme puss on her face. She’s staring right into Fleck’s eyes who, in harsh lighting, kinda looks like Robin Williams a little, doesn’t he?

“The guy that delivers lunch makes more money on the movie than we do,” said writer and artist Jimmy Palmiotti, summing up the situation of comic book creators signing Hollywood deals that pay them little while corporations rake in billions.
The topic of creators getting a share of what they create was front and center Friday at Comic-Con during a panel titled “The Importance of Comic Creators Owning Their Own IP.”
The topic is very current, as earlier in the week The Hollywood Reporter exposed the very lopsided contracts writers and artists face when seeing the characters they create end up on screen.
“Comics produce some of the biggest franchises, and we’re not seeing creators participating at the level that they should,” said Chris Giliberti, the CEO and co-founder of upstart digital comics platform Zestworld, which hosted the panel.

On Feb. 16, 2007, Mark Steven Johnson’s Ghost Rider movie hit theaters. Nicolas Cage starred as Johnny Blaze, a motorcycle stuntman powered by the devil to slay the damned in the form of a man with a flaming skull. It was the perfect vehicle for Nicolas Cage, a comic fan known for his often eccentric screen presence. Cage playing a demonic bounty hunter who spits hellfire is one of those things where it feels more like a documentary that only happens to resemble a Marvel Comics character.
It’s a fun movie on its own that hits just the right level of being over-the-top at the appropriate moments. If anything, it’s hurt by the perfect way it sets up fight scenes like video game boss battles, only for the fights to be over within seconds. While Ghost Rider is ultimately a footnote in the superhero movie pantheon, it’s still...

Maya is slated to be a supporting character in Hawkeye, but judging by her history in the comics, it's no wonder that the team at Marvel have decided to give her a show of her own.
Maya Lopez is a deaf Native American young woman who gets pulled into the world of heroes and villains at a very young age. Her father, a mob enforcer working for the villain Kingpin, is killed on his own boss's orders, and Maya is taken in by Fisk and shaped to support his villainous empire. As part of day two of DC’s big comic con pandemic substitute, DC Comics has made a metric ton of comics available for free online. Included in that passel of books are several from Milestone Comics – some classic issues of Icon, Hardware, and Static Shock, along with Milestone Returns #0, the kickoff to the big return of the Black-owned comic company slated for February. And there’s a pretty big surprise contained within.
The book is written by Reggie Hudlin and Greg Pak, with art from DC Publisher Jim Lee, Brothers Bond artist Ryan Benjamin; Teen Titans artist Khoi Pham; and Milestone co-founder Denys Cowan. Each artist gets a different introduction, and Benjamin and Hudlin rework Static’s origin to be a touch more timely.
In this new Milestone, Static gets his powers by being teargassed at a Black Lives Matter protest. On its face, this is a fairly big shift from his comics origin.

This week, yet another fantastic horror film is headed to Shudder—Jay Baruchel’s Random Acts of Violence—and I cannot recommend it enough. An adaptation of Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray’s graphic novel of the same name, the film follows comic creator Todd (Jesse Williams) and his closest collaborators as they take a road trip from Canada to New York. Along the way, Todd must reconcile the violence he brings to the page when his creation “Slasherman,” which is based on a real-life serial killer, ends up tracking the group during their travels, and finds his own gruesome sense of inspiration as he gets closer and closer to Todd, where real life and fantasy clash in the most horrific of ways.

The Violent Bear It Away: Baruchel Turns Murder into Art with Fragmented Debut
An exercise which navigates the oft-blurred lines between art and exploitation, actor Jay Baruchel turns to the director’s seat with his debut Random Acts of Violence, adapted from the graphic novel by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti.
Although it features Jesse Williams in a lead performance and mines some interesting subtexts, there’s an overall sense of incompleteness to a narrative which can’t quite deliver on the moody, self-reflexiveness it promises.
Todd (Williams) is the successful author of a violent comic book series, “Slasherman,” which details the rampage of the I-90 killer, a criminal who was never apprehended but left many victims from 1987 to 1991.…...

Horror movies can easily get lost going down a path of just being a gore-fest or just being one big metaphor. The most successful efforts in the genre manage to do more than one thing, or at least aren’t completely simple to pin down. Jay Baruchel’s second outing behind the camera, the horror flick Random Acts of Violence, manages to do this with aplomb. Not only is it gnarly and gory, it’s peddling a message, one rooted in the creative process. Almost a decade after he first began to try to bring this story to the screen, it’s now coming out on Shudder and is well worth your time. For Baruchel, as well as fans of the genre, it’s worth the wait. The film is a horror outing, one that seeks to ponder what the real life consequences can be when life imitates art. Here,...

On its most superficial horror flick level, Jay Baruchel’s latest directorial effort Random Acts of Violence works. Co-adapted with Jesse Chabot from Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti’s 2010 graphic novel of the same name, the story sees Slasherman comic creator Todd (Jesse Williams) hitting the road from Toronto to New York City with his wife (Jordana Brewster’s Kathy), assistant (Niamh Wilson’s Aurora), and business partner (Baruchel’s Ezra) in advance of a Comic-Con appearance. The reason they’ve decided not to fly is because Kathy is on a research mission for a new book she’s writing about the real “Slasherman’s” victims along 1-90. Todd’s run of glorifying the terrifying mystique of this killer has reached its end, so it’s only right to honor those lost upon his fictional death.

The Canadian filmmaker and actor, best known for his comedic bow in This is the End and as the voice of Hiccup in the How to Train Your Dragon series, has long been committed to bringing Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti’s vicious pages to the big screen, and wrote, directed, produced and stars in the upcoming film.
Random Acts of Violence explores ideas of legitimizing cruelty, the responsibility of the artist, and what makes a monster in society. Masterfully lensed by award-winning cinematographer Karim Hussain (Hobo With a Shotgun), the film holds a ferocious mirror up to art, society, and violence; and features a knock-out cast, iconic kills, and a pulsating score from celebrated punk all-star Wade MacNeil and...

Art imitation life of life imitating art? That's the question at the centre of writer/director Jay Baruchel's latest project Random Acts of Violence.
Adapted from Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti's comic book of the same title, Random Acts of Violence stars Jesse Williams as Todd and Baruchel as Ezra, the creators of "Slasherman," a hugely popular horror comic. The pair are working on their latest volume but Todd is experiencing writer's block so as a way to get the creative juices flowing, the pair, along with their girlfriends, head out on a road trip in search of inspiration but during the trip, they start to notice that their books might be inspiring murder and chaos.

DC Comics' "Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey" #2, available June 23, 2020, is written by Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner, with illustrations by Conner and covers by Conner and Arthur Adams:
"...over the course of her sleazy career, 'Harley Quinn' has met pretty much every super-villain who ever worked in 'Gotham City'. Some hate her. Some love her. But none of that's gonna' matter once they see how many zeroes there are on the bounty 'The Joker' is offering for her demise.
"Meanwhile, 'Cassandra Cain' finds herself in the unenviable position of being Harley Quinn’s bodyguard, but could this be her opportunity to learn a little about loosening up? If she's currently wound too tight, then just sit next to 'Auntie Harley'. She's got more than her share of loose screws..."

As stay-at-home orders started to crash over the world at the end of March, Diamond Comics Distributors announced that it would be suspending shipping of new books. Diamond has been functioning essentially as a monopoly for years, so this move meant, for all intents and purposes, the end of new comics releases, and it’s been that way for a month. But now, DC Comics announced that new comics will be hitting shops on April 28th, and the way they’re doing it could be a long-term shift in how we get the comic books we love.
The new releases are a scaled back list of new titles, not the full list of books one would expect to come from DC on a regular basis. Shipping on the 28th are Laura Marks & Kelley Jones’ Hill House book, Daphne Byrne #4; the final issue of Si Spurrier and Bilquis Evely’s run...

I pity Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn for not being able to find its audience, having the misfortune of opening just as the pandemic entered the news. Shunted to streaming, it’s languished and honestly, it’s entertaining and fun.
It’s not as good as anticipated.
Long in development, the movie was the brainchild of Margot Robbie, who immortalized the live-action version in 2016’s Suicide Squad misfire. Her role was largely inspired on the New 52/Rebirth take on the character, more Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti than Paul Dini and Bruce Timm. She was certainly the best thing about the movie so a spinoff featuring her and some of DC Comics’ other heroines sounded great.
She bonded with screenwriter Christina Hodson, best known for her solid work on Bumblebee (and credited as the writer of the still unfilmed Flash), and they crafted a...

While the newly-rechristened Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey (unofficially dropping its cumbersome parenthetical subtitle And The Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn) still holds matching 79% critical and audience scores at review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, putting it just ahead of the billion-dollar earner Captain Marvel‘s 78%, the latest entry in the DC Extended Universe is struggling to overcome its underwhelming $33 million opening weekend, which landed it among the poorest performers in the history of DC Comics adaptations.

Critical approval and positive audience reaction, reflected in consistent 80% scores for the latest DC Extended Universe installment Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey, officially known as Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), don’t seem to be helping the film’s box office numbers, after its $33 million opening weekend landed it in the company of some of the worst financial performers in the history of DC’s cinematic endeavors.
Though most reviewers have praised Margot Robbie’s portrayal of the newly-upgraded title character, a role she reprises from David Ayer’s 2016 villain team-up film Suicide Squad, a dedicated minority of viewers continue to criticize the Australian’s depiction of the psychiatrist-turned-sociopath, and DC Comics writer Jimmy Palmiotti took to Twitter recently to have words with them:

Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti are bringing Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey to DC's Black Label.
There’s something distinctly Looney Tunes about Harley Quinn, probably the combination of self-awareness and ultraviolent slapstick comedy. So when you ask Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti about the magnificent, luridly poetic profanity in Harley Quinn & The Birds of Prey, their new Black Label collaboration on the character they steered for the better part of a decade, it’s hard not to hear Conner’s slow laugh as the glee of a cartoon artist’s paintbrush, getting ready to draw an anvil over Wile E. Coyote’s head. “That’s all Amanda, by the way,” says Palmiotti. “She’s the one [who makes] the sailors come running out of the bar, you know?”

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) premiered this weekend to critical praise, being called “a fun, madcap, and insane ride” with “highly stylized” visuals and several excellent performances on its way to earning a 92% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Taking a cue from Deadpool’s record-breaking first outing, Birds of Prey features the fourth-wall smashing narration of its lead character along with a non-linear storyline, and functions as a spinoff of David Ayer’s 2016 antihero team-up film Suicide Squad with the return of Margot Robbie as former-psychiatrist-turned-Joker-devotee Harleen Quinzel and a minuscule cameo by at least one of her other teammates from Waller’s first incarnation of Task Force X.
Harley Quinn is also set to return, along with Amanda Waller, Rick Flag and Digger Harkness, in James Gunn’s official standalone sequel The Suicide Squad in August of 2021, but Birds of Prey director Cathy Yan...

By the time Birds of Prey kicks off, Harley Quinn's toxic, abusive relationship with the Joker is, thankfully, over. Although her relationship with "Mr. J." has been the driving force for this iteration of Harley so far, her relationship history is actually a lot more complicated than that - and it involves both men and women. Is this a new invention for the movie, or is Harley Quinn queer in the DC comics? Harley's sexuality is something that's been played with in the comics for years; it's just not gotten as much attention as her "classic" relationship with the Joker.
In the opening sequence of Birds of Prey, the filmmakers get this particular question out of the way with a minimum of fuss. Harley's backstory is dealt with through a playful, goofy animated sequence, narrated by Harley herself, that depicts the events of Suicide Squad as well as more of Harley's backstory,...

One of the exciting things about the upcoming Birds of Prey movie is getting to see Harley Quinn on her own, instead of as Joker’s sidekick. But if you can’t wait, there’s already a series that portrays just that: DC Universe’s Harley Quinn.
The adult animated series, which premiered on the DC Universe streaming service back in November, has become increasingly enjoyable every week. The pilot introduces us to Harley Quinn (voiced by The Big Bang Theory‘s Kaley Cuoco), who is happily in love with her boyfriend and partner-in-crime Joker (Alan Tudyk)… until he abandons her in Arkham Asylum.

Harley Quinn breaks out another deep-cut character in an ep that showcases the talented cast and introduces the first true flaw in the show.
This Harley Quinn review contains spoilers.
Oh, DC, what are we going to do with you? Harley Quinn is seven episodes in and has so far been an entertaining take on the titular anti-heroine. But this week DC Universe's flagship mature animation demonstrates where the creative team's imaginations stop, which is apparently when it comes to already established, canon, same sex relationships.
With Harley (Kaley Cuoco) still on her quest to join the Legion of Doom she chooses to help break out Wanda Sykes' Queen of Fables who was briefly featured in an earlier episode. The villainess is quickly out of control as she slaughters an entire family reunion with the Big Bad Wolf and then sends the Three Little Pigs to eat the bodies,...

All thirteen episodes were provided prior to broadcast.
Before I even get close to critiquing the inaugural season of DC Universe’s new Harley Quinn animated series, I must say it was quite beneficial to view every episode in advance of the premiere. Obviously, this can’t happen all too often because it’s very seldom that entire seasons of television are complete this early in the game, but you can imagine how it allows folks such as myself the chance to better get an idea of what’s on tap. I think five episodes of a given series were the most I’d been allotted in the past, so this was quite the treat.
To be entirely honest, had I screened even, say, three episodes before writing this review, I’d be singing a much different tune. I hate to say it, but I absolutely loathed the first three installments viewed.

Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey sees the return of Amanda Conner
Amanda Conner, the gifted artist who along with husband Jimmy Palmiotti turned Harley Quinn into the comedic comics force she is today, were announced as the creative team on a new Harley book for DC's Black Label mature imprint. Harley Quinn and the Birds of Prey is slated to land in February of 2020.
Conner has been a DC Comics mainstay for years, and she and Palmiotti co-wrote the Harley Quinn book that was part of wave two of the New 52. That book took Harley away from her role as lead henchperson for the Joker and instead had her highlight the absurdity around her in a superhero universe. They moved Harley to Coney Island and surrounded her with a new supporting cast who eventually turned into a gang of her own, the aptly named Gang of Harleys.

Whenever a new year approaches, I normally have a clear idea of which superhero movie will be my most anticipated. In the case of 2020, I’d like to say it’s Birds of Prey, yet I’m internally conflicted.
You see, even though I’ve been dying to see Black Canary and Huntress on the silver screen, the costuming department apparently decided to ignore using comic books for reference. Not only do those ladies’ outfits look nothing like their counterparts’ on the printed page, but neither does Harley Quinn’s. They’re basically unrecognizable. And there’s also the matter of significant reshoots to consider – but I’ll remain cautiously optimistic.
Regardless, we must brace ourselves because the marketing machine is starting to turn its gears. In an effort to entice casual fans to take a closer look at the books, DC Comics will be releasing three Birds of Prey...

Aside from likely having to safeguard a young Cassandra Cain from the sadistic Black Mask, not much is currently known about the plot to the Birds of Prey movie. Although, its subtitle, “The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn,” is more telling than one would think.
Based on that, it’s become obvious that the Clown Princess of Crime will finally split from the Joker, a status quo that’s actually been familiar to comic book readers for about five years now. In fact, it wasn’t until Harley went solo that I even liked her, specifically when Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner began penning her adventures.

We're hunting down all the Marvel Easter eggs we can find in Daredevil season 3. Here's what we've found so far...
This Daredevil Season 3 article consists of nothing but spoilers. We have a spoiler free review right here if you prefer.
Marvel's Daredevil Season 3 has finally arrived on Netflix, and kids, it is spectacular. This is one of the best seasons in the entire Marvel Netflix pantheon, and even though it is (relatively) light on the Marvel Comics references, there is still plenty to unpack, and probably plenty more I'm going to miss on the first viewing.
So here's how this works...I've tried to catch all the cool Marvel references in Daredevil Season 3, but there's only so much I can do. I'm only one man trying to clean up Hell's Kitchen, after all. Let me know anything I missed down in the comments, or hit me up on Twitter.

The DC Universe streaming service has been in the works for a while and it seems like a lot of DC fans are excited about subscribing to it. There's going to be a lot of great content made available on it both old and new and now we have confirmation on the launch date and pricing.
It was announced on the first episode of Kevin Smith's DC Daily series that DC Universe will officially launch on September 15th, 2018 which is also the previously announced Batman Day.
As far as the pricing goes, membership subscriptions will cost $7.99 a month or $74.99 a year. That's not a bad price and I personally think what we will be getting on the service is worth the price.
You can find all of the details of what the service entails below. Will you be signing up for DC Universe?
With membership, DC Universe offers all-new original live-action and animated series,...
