Full Moon’s Subspecies is an interesting franchise. It started in 1991, right at the dawn of a decade that’s all-too-often considered to be a mixed bag of horror offerings, catering to the direct-to-video market that was booming at the time. Until now, with the release of Subspecies V: Bloodrise on Screambox June 2, there had not been an entry in this series since 1998, nor had there even really been much merchandise until the comic book miniseries by Cullen Bunn a few years ago; and yet the vampire franchise still persists as a cult classic.
Subspecies is a seminal vampire franchise, Radu has many loyal followers and that fandom has sustained for decades, with long, long stretches without anything to feed it. That is a true testament to the talents of writer/director Ted Nicolaou, original screenwriter David Pabian, and of course Anders Hove as the villainous Radu. The franchise has...

Subspecies
Stars: Angus Scrimm, Anders Hove, Irina Movila, Laura Mae Tate, Michelle McBride, Ivan J. Rado | Written by Charles Band, Jackson Barr, David Pabian | Directed by Ted Nicolaou
After being banished from his home town, villainous vampire Radu Vladislas (Hove) returns and murders his father in order to claim a powerful bloodstone. Then, in an attempt to harm his good-hearted brother Stefan (Watson), he sets his sights on turning his sibling’s friends, Michelle (Tate), Mara (Movila) and Lillian (McBride), into vampires. Can Stefan stop Radu before it is too late?
The first in what turned out to be a five-part vampire saga, Subspecies was one of Full Moon Entertainment’s flagship franchises and like it’s Charles Band-produced brethren the film was a staple of video stores across the country. More interestingly, this movie was one of the first American productions to film in a post-Communism Romania, using...

The Puppet Master series is very dear to my heart. Discovering the films many years ago as a teenager browsing the shelves of my local video store, I have grown up with the franchise, following it through thick and thin, good and bad… I’ve owned every iteration of the films on rental VHS, sell-thru VHS, DVD and now, thanks to the good folks at 88 Films, on Blu-ray.
Following the release of the original Puppet Master back in August, 88 Films are following up with the two immediate sequels, Puppet Master 2, which expanded the roster of puppets with one of my favourites, Torch, and Puppet Master 3: Toulon’s Revenge, which many consider to be the pinnacle of the series and which has since spawned two related sequels of its own in the recent “puppets vs. nazis” flicks Puppet Master: Axis of Evil and Puppet Master X: Axis Rising (which...
