Sony Pictures Entertainment confirmed Wednesday that John Calley is negotiating to retire this fall as chairman and CEO of the studio he has headed for the past five years. Speculation on Calley's departure had been building for weeks, though it comes just six months after he signed a two-year contract renewal. Calley, 73, is in discussions with studio owner Sony Corp. of America to convert his current contract into a motion picture production agreement. "At that point, Mr. Calley will retire as chairman and chief executive officer of Sony Pictures Entertainment and produce films for the studio," SPE said. Calley was not available for comment. Sources said the executive is also in discussions with Simon & Shuster about a deal for his memoirs, to be penned with writer David Owen, who wrote a lengthy New Yorker profile of Calley in 1994.
