The Beautiful Game: Cast, Release Date, Photos and Plot of Sports Drama About the Homeless World Cup
Get ready for kickoff. Bill Nighy is starring in a new sports drama based on the Homeless World Cup, a real-life football (that’s soccer to Americans) tournament that spotlights unhoused athletes from around the world. Produced by Hwc ambassador (and Oscar nominee) Colin Farrell and Blueprint Pictures’ Graham Broadbent, Pete Czernin and Ben Knight with Anita Overland, The Beautiful Game tells the story of the English team and their coach (played by Nighy) as they prepare for the global tournament.
In a new clip from the film, Mal explains the Homeless World Cup to Vinny, and we catch a glimpse of the many talented players who will be competing in Rome. “Every player has a story to tell,” Mal says. “Heartbreaking, unexpected, thrilling stories. And they tell those stories in one great universal language. And that’s football.”
The Homeless World Cup has been around since 2001, representing nearly 70 countries.

Film and high-end TV production spend in the U.K. is predicted to hit up to £7.66 (9.4 billion) by 2025, according to new research commissioned by industry body ScreenSkills.
That is an annual average growth rate of 7.3 over the next three years.
While that’s good news for the industry, it will also impact the already critical skills shortfall. The research suggested over 20,000 new full-time crew will need to be trained up to meet demand.
Training of both existing workforce and new recruits will require an investment of £95.1 million to £104.3 million per year. Over a three-year period, however, it would provide an Roi of £4.56 billion in terms of economic return. Already, the screen industry generates the equivalent of 122,000 full-time jobs.
Last year ScreenSkills offered £12.91 million worth of financial support while the BFI offered £4.3 million of National Lottery funding between 2017-2022 to support skills training.

The UK’s film and high-end TV could be worth nearly £7.7B (9.4B) by 2025 but training enough crew to achieve that would cost around £300M (368M), according to a study by British industry body ScreenSkills.
The value of the production sector is expected to leap from the current £5.64B to anywhere between £7.07B and £7.66B, with around 15,130 and 20,770 additional crew needed to meet demand.
While this represents an annual investment of between £95.1M and £104.3M between 2023 and 2025, ScreenSkills’ research suggests the estimated economic return would be 15 times the costs of the training — with the costs based on figures for existing ScreenSkills training programs.
The UK is currently seeing a surge in productions as broadcasters and streamers line up increasingly ambitious shows and take advantage of the industry’s tax break system. However, a skills clear gap has emerged and many are concerned that major projects such Amazon’s upcoming production...

BBC Studios has closed a raft of global deals for Steve McQueen’s hotly-anticipated anthology drama Small Axe, which will premiere on BBC One in the UK and Amazon in the U.S.
Australia’s Foxtel, France’s Salto, Spain’s Movistar+, Russia’s KinoPoisk, and Greece’s Cosmote TV are among the territories to have picked up the show. It will also premiere on BBC First across Asia, Benelux, and Turkey, and on BBC Brit in South Africa.

Mangrove Courtesy of the BBC
The BFI London Film Festival in partnership with American Express is thrilled to announce that this year’s Opening film will be Mangrove, directed by the multi-award-winning visual artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen, starring Letitia Wright, Shaun Parkes and Malachi Kirby. The film will receive its European premiere on Wednesday 7th October as part of the Festival’s innovative 12-day offering which takes the entire Festival out to cities around the UK, and with many films across programme also available for virtual premieres at home.
Marking 50 years since the events depicted in the film, Mangrove tells the true story of the Mangrove 9, the group of Black activists who clashed with London police during a protest march in 1970 and their highly publicised trial that followed. The trial was the first judicial acknowledgment of behaviour motivated by racial hatred within the Metropolitan Police. Mangrove is co-written by Steve McQueen and Alastair Siddons.

U.K. broadcaster BBC One has released a punchy trailer for “Mangrove,” one of five films from the “Small Axe” anthology by Oscar and BAFTA winner Steve McQueen (“12 Years a Slave”).
Aug. 9 marks the 50th anniversary of the day in 1970 when 150 protesters of West Indian, African and South Asian heritage in Notting Hill, West London, marched to local police stations in protest of police harassment in their communities, including the Mangrove restaurant. Nine protest leaders were arrested and charged with incitement to riot: Frank Crichlow, Darcus Howe, Altheia Jones-LeCointe, Barbara Beese, Rupert Boyce, Rhodan Gordon, Anthony Innis, Rothwell Kentish and Godfrey Millett. The group later became known as the ‘Mangrove 9.’
“It was a march necessitated by relentless police brutality in Notting Hill,” said McQueen. “To commemorate the bravery of these community activists and the nine who went on to be acquitted of incitement to riot with the judge citing ‘evidence of racial hatred,...

Black Panther star Letitia Wright and Star Wars‘ John Boyega will lead cast in Steve McQueen’s upcoming BBC TV drama Small Axe, about London’s West Indian community between the 1960s-80s. As we reported yesterday, Amazon has picked up U.S. rights.
Production is now underway on location in London. Also starring are Malachi Kirby (Roots), Shaun Parkes (Lost In Space), Rochenda Sandall (Line Of Duty), Alex Jennings (Victoria) and Jack Lowden (Mary Queen Of Scots).
The long-gestating series will comprise six parts and tell five different stories. Its title is derived from a Jamaican proverb: “If you are the big tree, we are the small axe,” meaning that relatively marginal or small voices of dissent can successfully challenge more powerful ones. It is also the title of a Bob Marley song from his 1973 album Catch a Fire.
McQueen created the series’ stories with Alastair Siddons and Courttia Newland.

Timothée Chalamet was on fire last year. Playing the heartbreaking Elio in Call Me By Your Name, as well as giving remarkable supporting performances in both Hostiles and Lady Bird, Chalamet has cemented himself as one of the best young actors working in Hollywood. We learned earlier this year that he would lead the newest period-drama The King for Netflix, and just when we thought things couldn’t get more exciting, news has broken that Robert Pattinson, Sean Harris, Ben Mendelsohn and Lily-Rose Depp will be joining him, according to Deadline.
The King, directed by David Michôd, is based off the Shakespeare play Henry V, and will be adapted for the screen by both Michôd and Joel Edgerton, who will also star in the film. Chalamet will play Henry V in the titular role and will follow his involuntary rise to power after the death of his brother – all while facing military conflict with France.

Now that principal photography has been slated to get underway next week – April 4, to be exact – Fox Searchlight is beefing up its cast for upcoming adaptation, My Cousin Rachel.
With Rachel Weisz, Sam Claflin and Holliday Grainger already on board, Variety is reporting that Game of Thrones stalwart Iain Glen and stage actor Simon Russell Beale have agreed to star in the feature film, itself based on the epynomous novel penned by Daphne du Maurier.
The movie is being adapted for the silver screen by director Roger Michell (Notting Hill, Enduring Love), who expressed his own excitement about steering du Maurier’s “detailed, dark, sexy and cinematic” story into theaters. For Michell, “so many really great films have grown out of the works of Daphne Du Maurier: ‘Don’t Look Now,’ ‘The Birds,’ ‘Rebecca’… .and here’s another of her classics which is at once detailed, dark, sexy, cinematic and full of surprises.

Two soldiers (trained by British forces) from Czechoslovakia’s army-in-exile were parachuted into their homeland to lead a mission against the Nazi nicknamed “The Butcher of Prague”.
Ellis helms from a script he co-wrote with Anthony Frewin. Leonard Glowinski, Anita Overland and Chris Curling will produce. Filming gets underway in Prague in July.
