The original film editor for “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” needed her mind scrubbed clean after suffering from a “nervous breakdown” during the chaotic production, according to producer Anthony Bregman.
Bregman revealed to “Hollywood Gold” podcast host and fellow film producer Daniela Taplin Lundberg that the unconventional tactics behind the 2004 drama led to an editor (whom he did not name) being let go early in production. Valdís Óskarsdóttir eventually stepped in to finish the cut.
“All that footage went to our editor, a traditional editor, someone who has won Academy Awards and is like a big-time editor. Lucky to get her, but it was not at all like she was used to,” Bregman said. “Because every shot was every set up, the editors’ assistant couldn’t organize the folders for the footage in a traditional way. So the first day’s footage after 10 days had not been cut. We also were like,...

“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” is one of the most beloved films of the 21st century, but it could have been a whole lot different had Michel Gondry decided to leave in one character that ultimately never appears in the theatrical release. “Grey’s Anatomy” star Ellen Pompeo shot scenes as Naomi, the ex-girlfried of Jim Carrey’s Joel, but Gondry and editor Valdís Óskarsdóttir removed them for reasons that become clear in a new video essay from Film Radar.

Reykjavik — On the eve of its tenth installment, there was clearly no need for the Reykjavik International Film Festival to convince the world's A-listers to come to Iceland. Christopher Nolan had just finished shooting a chunk of Interstellar on a nearby glacier. Ryan Gosling was in town, keeping a low profile while working with editor Valdis Oskarsdottir (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) on his directing debut, How to Catch a Monster. And Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen's megayacht Octopus sat offshore, with rumors circulating that he was using the ship's mini-submarines, James Cameron-style, to tour scientists

With all of the information kicking around on Iceland, the country remains a mystery to me as, apparently, does the comedy – but we’ll get to that in a second.
For his second turn behind the director’s chair, editor turned director Valdís Óskarsdóttir returns home to tell the comedic story King’s Road. Junior returns home after three years abroad in hopes that his father can help him sort out some financial problems which won’t go away, hence Junior’s arrival with his “friend” Rupert in tow.
It’s immediately apparent that King’s Road isn’t exactly a “normal” town. If you can even call it a town. It's a trailer park in rural Iceland. Perhaps it’s the thin air or the fact that the town seems removed...

Valdís Óskarsdóttir is Iceland’s premier film editor, having worked on films such as Festen, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (for which she won a Bafta award), Julian Donkey Boy and Mongol and she’s also one of the driving forces behind Iceland’s changing cinematic landscape.
I guess working with fantastic filmmakers such as Michel Gondry, Anders Thomas Jensen and Thomas Vinterberg has gotten her infected with the directing bug because this year, although pretty much unknown to everyone, she shot a feature film in seven days using four cameras all supervised by Anthony Dod Mantle (28 Days Later, Mifunes sidste sang, The Last King of Scotland) and the cast made up of the Vesturport gang (Children, Parents and the upcoming Undercurrent).
The story is about a young couple who want to get married in a country chapel an hour away from the city. To keep with the tradition...
