Francis Ford Coppola’s self-funded feature Megalopolis has revealed a first look image after landing a Cannes competition berth.
The project follows the rebuilding of a metropolis after it has fallen into decline, with two competing visions — one from the idealist architect Cesar Catilina (Adam Driver), the other from corrupt Mayor Frank Cicero, played by Giancarlo Esposito — colliding.
The first official image from Megalopolis reveals Driver eyeing a rebuilding of the City of New Rome, while Nathalie Emmanuel, as Julia Cicero, the socialite daughter of Mayor Cicero, looks on. Megalopolis is structured as a Roman epic fable set in an imagined modern America.
To rebuild New Rome, Julia Cicero ultimately comes between a Cesar Catilina she falls in love with and Frank Cicero whom she remains loyal to as her father, as the two men battle with competing visions.

“Oppenheimer” is the most nominated film at this year’s Oscars with 13 nominations. That’s one shy of the all-time record of 14 nominations so it missed out on Oscars history in the nomination phase.
However, Universal’s movie could match Academy Awards history in the awards phase by equalling the record of 11 Oscar wins overall. So far, three films have won 11 Academy Awards. They were “Ben-Hur” in 1960, “Titanic” in 1998, and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2004. Here’s the breakdown of what awards they won.
“Ben-Hur”
Best Picture — Sam Zimbalist Best Director — William Wyler Best Actor — Charlton Heston Best Supporting Actor — Hugh Griffith Best Film Editing Best Cinematography (Color) Best Music (Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture) Best Costume Design (Color) Best Art Direction-Set Decoration (Color) Best Sound Recording Best Visual Effects

It’s been two decades since an epic fantasy film made history at the Oscars, winning every category in which it was nominated, and three women set new records. There weren’t many surprises at the 76th Academy Awards, but there were some memorable moments. Billy Crystal hosted for his eighth time on February 29, 2004. Read on for Gold Derby’s Oscars flashback 20 years ago to 2004.
It was finally Peter Jackson‘s time as the third installment of his “Lord of the Rings” trilogy earned him a trio of awards. Despite numerous nominations, the first two films failed to make big showings; however, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” not only claimed Best Picture, but won all 11 categories in which it was nominated. “Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms,” the first part of Wuershan’s big-budget “Fengshen Trilogy,” topped the mainland China box office for the second weekend and expanded its week-on-week haul by 35%.
‘Barbie’ also showed signs of resilience in a market where it opened a week earlier in a disappointing fifth place.
“Creation of the Gods I” grossed $57.6 million. according to data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway. That compares with $42.6 million in it opening frame and after 11 days in Chinese theaters, it has earned $156 million. Also, unlike its first weekend, “Creation of the Gods” was the winner on each day between Friday and Sunday.
The “Fengshen Trilogy” set out to be a mega scale blending of history, folklore and mythology from more than 3,000 years ago, that would be China’s answer to both “Lord of the Rings” and “Iron Man.” It counts of Barrie Osborne (“Lord of the Rings...

While “Barbie” was romping to box office records in North American and scoring strongly in many international territories, the pink phenomenon could muster only fifth place in China, the world’s second largest movie market, on its opening weekend.
“Barbie” managed $8.2 million in its opening three days, according to data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway.
Local box office sources show the film trapped in that position on all three days of the weekend session, as the locally-produced titles jostled for leadership and swapped positions. Somewhat encouragingly, the daily score for “Barbie” had increased by Sunday as it was given more screening sessions by Chinese exhibitors.
“Barbie” joins a growing list of Hollywood films that have disappointed at the mainland Chinese box office this year. Others include “The Little Mermaid,” “Indiana Jones” and “Fast X.”
Hollywood titles are facing fewer structural impediments in China (import and certification delays) that they did in recent years.

“Mulan” may not be for very young children, as it’s become the first Disney live-action remake to receive a PG-13 rating.
The new take on the Disney classic got the rating from the Motion Picture Association of America due to the “sequences of violence” apparently depicted in the film. All previous live-action remakes from the studio have received a G or PG rating, and 2017’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” was Disney’s most recent film to be labeled PG-13.
“Mulan” is straying away from the model of previous remakes like “Aladdin,” “The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Cinderella.” Unlike the other live-action takes, “Mulan’s” trailers depicted the film without its famous musical numbers and removed some of the characters featured in the original 1998 animated version, including Mushu, Mulan’s dragon companion who was voiced by Eddie Murphy. Two trailers have been released,...

When you first heard that Pete’s Dragon was coming to theaters, you probably expected something that would become one of the biggest films of the year. Of course, the cynical among us probably expected something to ruin their childhood.
Either way, once Bryce Dallas Howard and Robert Redford were attached, you had to take notice. But, in a year that was filled with bizarre disappointments, the movie didn’t take off the way it deserved.
Well, it’s headed home, and if you didn’t catch it in theaters, you really want to mark your calendars, because I know a lot of younger audiences didn’t get a chance to see this, and they’re going to love it. The release is pretty loaded with bonuses too, but in keeping with the current trend, they may not be things that younger viewers are especially interested in.

Brazilian director David Schurmann’s film was selected over Aquarius by one vote, prompting some social media protests.
On the morning after the gala screening of Little Secret at the 18th edition of Rio de Janeiro Int’l Film Festival, the Brazilian director David Schurmann packed his bags to travel to Los Angeles. Schurmann is to meet awards consultant Steven Raphael, who has been hired (via Skype) to help him with his film campaign for the 89th Academy Awards.
Little Secret was chosen last month as the Brazil’s official entry for Best Foreign Language Film, after beating its rival, Kleber Mendonça Filho’s Aquarius, by one vote only (the result was five to four). The choice made by Brazil’s Oscar selection committee further fuelled the controversy around Aquarius and led to protests on social media against Little Secret.

Disney's new take on Pete's Dragon lands in cinemas this August. Here's the trailer...
Disney is still counting up the cash it’s made on its live action telling of The Jungle Book (directed by Jon Favreau). And whilst its next live action take on an animated film isn’t expected to have quite the same impact at the box office, we’d imagine the studio is quietly confident about its new Pete’s Dragon.
The movie stars Robert Redford, Bryce Dallas Howard, Oakes Fegley, West Bentley, Karl Urban and Oona Laurence. David Lowery is directing, having co-written the script with Toby Halbrooks.

While some may already feel burned-out by the summer movie season, there are more promising films to come. One of our most-anticipated features will arrive in mid-August. It’s David Lowery‘s follow-up to his sublime drama Ain’t Them Bodies Saints: a reboot of Disney’s 1977 Pete’s Dragon. If you’ve never seen the original, it follows a orphan kid who brings his magical dragon to a new town. With a cast featuring Bryce Dallas Howard, Robert Redford, Karl Urban, and Wes Bentley, a new trailer has now arrived.
“We explored pink, just to see what would happen,” Lowery tells EW, commenting on his title character’s design. “From the get-go, the aesthetic was always to make everything feel as handmade as possible, including effects. To really have it feel like a blur between a very grounded realistic world and a world in which a big green dragon that can turn invisible can exist.” Check out the new trailer and poster below.

Making it three for three with Entertainment Weekly scoops – following hot on the heels of new images for both Jason Bourne and Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters – the outlet has unveiled a new still for David Lowery’s (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints) live-action fairytale, Pete’s Dragon.
Yes, Pete’s reptilian ally may have been camera shy up until now, but today’s all-new shot showcases the beast – bearing the name Elliot – in all its furry glory. Emerging from a 40-year hibernation, Pete’s Dragon is a total reimagining of the Disney classic, introducing newcomer Oakes Fegley in the role of Pete, a lonesome 10-year-old that takes solace in the company of a rather unusual friend.
In breathing new life into the motion picture, the House of Mouse was conscious to retain much of the creature design glimpsed in the 1977 original. According to Lowery, there were “certain things about the...

Last week saw the debut of the first poster for Disney's upcoming Pete's Dragon remake, along with the promise of the trailer to come. Now it's arrived, and you can check it out right here to see your first look at the revamped classic.
If you're a fan of the original Pete's Dragon and eager to see what the remake will be like...well, you may have to keep waiting. The first teaser has arrived, but it does little to tell you about the movie or sell us on the need for its existence:
See what I mean? I may be coming down on it a bit harsh, but I was expecting a little bit more from it. If you know nothing of the original story, this trailer won't help new audiences out, and seems to actively avoid the whimsical nature of the movie which made it so fun to begin with.

It may seem strange for one studio to commit to the release of two re-imaginings of past glories about orphan boys living in wooded areas – especially in the same year – but this very particular trend looks set to pay off for Walt Disney Studios in spectacular fashion, as The Jungle Book charges into theatres in April, while Pete’s Dragon is scheduled to dominate late summer. Up until now, little has been seen of this project, but with the first trailer now available, we can see that something magical this way comes.
There has always been something fascinating about the idea of dragons – these mythical creatures that have inspired so many centuries of storytelling. It seems the idea of lost children, fending for themselves and discovering spectacular secrets is also fascinating, as that plot device has given us generations of tales to pass on, too.

One of my favorite Sundance films of the last few years was Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, a sublime drama starring Rooney Mara, Casey Affleck and Ben Foster, which marked the break out for director David Lowery. When his follow-up was announced a few years ago, it caught us all by surprise. Yes, he jumped to a reboot of Disney’s 1977 Pete’s Dragon, tasked with reinventing “the core story,” but this time without the musical numbers of the original animated/live-action hybrid family film.
If you’ve never seen the Disney original, it follows a orphan kid who brings his magical dragon to a new town and hijinks ensue. With a cast featuring Bryce Dallas Howard, Robert Redford, Karl Urban, Wes Bentley, the first trailer has arrived, which acts more like a teaser, setting up our main characters and the tone. Who is thanked the most in Oscar acceptance speeches? Vocativ tallied the numbers, and Steven Spielberg came out on top with 42 mentions. This makes sense if you stop to think about how his films produce a high yield in the technical categories. In fact, the rest of the top ten followed a similar suit with directors and producers of effects-heavy films tending to do well, like George Lucas, James Cameron, Peter Jackson, and Fran Walsh. Here's the full list: 1. Steven Spielberg (42) 2. Harvey Weinstein (34) 3. James Cameron (28) 4. George Lucas (23) 5. Peter Jackson (22) 6. God (19) 7. Fran Walsh (18) 8. Sheila Nevins (17) 9. Francis Ford Coppola, Barrie Osborne (16) 10. Martin Scorsese, Saul Zaentz (15)...

Wellington, Nz. Perhaps it's the blustery winterish weather outside and the relative warmth and stillness inside the vast, canvas-covered tent/structure that give Sir Ian McKellen comfort. Maybe it's the lure of craft services dessert that give him cause to stay. Or maybe the venerable thespian is just in an introspective mood. Whatever the cause, as wind howls outside and various members of the "Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" crew scurry in and out of the door, accompanied by chilly gusts and intruding drizzle, McKellen holds court with a small group of reporters for nearly 45 minutes. Some of that time is spent on The State of Gandalf and the events that may or may not be on-tap for the third installment of Peter Jackson's second Tolkien-based trilogy, but far more of the interview is dedicated to deep reflection, delivered in the same authoritative and sonorous tone...

Dreams come cheap, right? $1 for a lottery ticket and now, $1 for a producing credit? For a movie that could conceivably have more producers than there are zombies in The Walking Dead, Barrie Osborne (one of the producers on The Lord Of The Rings and The Matrix) is looking to Kickstarter to help fund his next film outing, Talk Is Cheap. And he’s giving away producing credits for the contribution of only $1 on his hopeful way to raise $1.5M.
So far there are 74 … no wait … 80 backers (wow, it raised in a matter of seconds). So does this mean he’s going to serve up 80 producer credits? “Associate producer credits,” says Osborne’s and director-writer-producer Jim Jarrett’s PR spokesman. Really? Yes. If successfully funded, the film’s on-screen credit crawl could include the individual names of at least 1.5 million Kickstarter contributors. Make that 1.5 million and three — John Labrie is producing with Osborne and Jarrett.

Picturehouse has acquired U.S. rights to Gloria, the controversial Mexican biopic based on the rise, fall, and rise of Latin American pop-rock icon Gloria Trevi. The musical drama stars Sofia Espinosa as Trevi, the singer-songwriter who earned the nicknames “The Mexican Madonna” and “The Supreme Diva of Mexican Pop” with her sexually- and politically-charged brand of chart-toppers in the ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s. After signing off on the project, Trevi attempted last year to block the project from moving forward. A January 2015 release is now planned with Universal Pictures International releasing the film in Mexico and Latin America.
Trevi, who’s sold over 20 million records in her 25-year career, is no stranger to controversy. In 2000 she, manager-husband Sergio Andrade, and a backup singer were arrested and charged with corrupting minors in a sex cult; Trevi spent over four years in jail before being acquitted and freed.
