The other demonic possession movie opening this week, “When Evil Lurks” is unlikely to steal major box-office thunder from “The Exorcist: Believer.” But Argentine genre specialist Demian Rugna’s latest is no mere opportunistic cash-in, either, with its own distinctive and non-formulaic take on the notion of an evil spirit that strikes like a malignant disease. IFC Films is releasing this uneven but engrossing, sometimes startling horror thriller to several hundred U.S. theaters on October 6. Shudder’s first Spanish-language original production begins streaming on that platform October 27.
Rugna had an international breakout five years ago with his third feature “Terrified” (aka “Aterrados”), about a fantastical, lethal infestation in a couple of middle-class Buenos Aires households. A Guillermo del Toro-produced English-language remake was announced, as well as “Terrified 2,” though neither has yet come to pass. Instead, we have this new “contagion” thriller, which trades its predecessor’s supposedly scientifically-explicable menace for a supernatural one,...

Terrified aka Aterrados is an Argentinian horror film. In Spanish, this feature premiered on Shudder in 2018. Now, the film is set to release, across the U.S., on DVD and Blu-ray this September 1st. In the film, a supernatural force is taking over a suburban street in Buenos Aires. Now, it is up to three characters to push this spiritual evil back into the abyss. This title was developed by Demian Rugna (Death Knows Your Name) and stars: Maximiliano Ghione, Norberto Gonzalo and Elvira Onetto. A preview of the U.S. home entertainment release is hosted here. The International trailer, for Terrified, is much better than the U.S. one. In the U.S. trailer, characters are introduced and certain story details are revealed. But, the darker parts will only be revealed on the release. The DVD and Blu-ray will both be available in an unrated version. Of 88 minutes, this...

"A true story of fear." Rlje Films has released another official US trailer for the Argentinian supernatural horror film Terrified, also known as Aterrados in Spanish. This first premiered at the Morbido Film Fest in Mexico in 2017, then it won Best Horror Film at Fantastic Fest in 2018, and stopped by the Montevideo Fantástico, Brussels Fantastic, Fantaspoa, Neuchâtel, Fantasia, FrightFest, and Sitges Film Festival on a global world tour. When strange events occur in a neighborhood in Buenos Aires, a doctor specializing in the paranormal, her colleague, and an ex police officer decide to investigate further. Starring Maxi Ghione, Norberto Gonzalo, Elvira Onetto, George Lewis, and Julieta Vallina. This isn't the best trailer, a bit too dark and doesn't have that much scary footage, but with all the buzz it still seems like it's worth a watch. Here's the official US trailer (+ poster) for Demián Rugna's Terrified, direct from Rlje's...

Terrific news from Screen Daily yesterday for our good friends at Grupo Morbido and Demian Rugna, director of the great shocker Terrified (Aterrados), and his production team in Argentina. Terrified stars Maxi Ghione, Norberto Amadeo Gonzalo and Elvira Onetto and centres on a police officer and an old friend who investigate a series of paranormal occurrences in homes.
