Happy Valley‘s Sarah Lancashire today took home the BAFTA TV Award for Leading Actress for the second time.
She beat the likes of Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us), Sharon Horgan (Best Interests) and Helena Bonham Carter (Nolly) to bag the final award of the evening.
The award is Lancashire’s third BAFTA TV Award, coming after a Best Actress win for Happy Valley in 2017 and Best Supporting Actress in 2014 for Last Tango in Halifax. She has been nominated for Best Actress on two other occasions.
In Happy Valley, Lancashire plays divorced police officer Catherine Cawood, who plays a long-running game of cat-and-mouse with criminal Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton). The third and final season launched in the UK early last year, seven years after the first went out.
Kate Winslet won last year for her performance in Channel 4 single drama I Am Ruth.

Not all superheroes wear capes, but Shirley Chisholm certainly did. In 1969, shortly after becoming the first Black woman elected to Congress, Chisholm strode through the halls of power in a houndstooth cape coat. The coat was stylish, tasteful, and clear in its message: The Congresswoman would not be ignored.
That look is recreated in “Shirley,” Netflix’s biopic about Chisholm’s early years in the House of Representatives and her eventual run for president. In fact, it’s the very first thing we see Chisholm wearing as she poses with her fellow representatives for a Congressional class photo. For costume designer Megan “Bijou” Coates, this piece was perfect for introducing Chisholm (Regina King) as both a historical figure and a dramatic character. “It’s the cape,” she told IndieWire. “It’s all the elements of the costume: The gloves, the little fascinator, the boots. It evokes the power she had...

“The Crown” could well bow out in style on home soil, with the final outing of the show leading the list of nominees for the 2024 BAFTA TV and TV Craft awards, announced Wednesday.
Netflix’s hit royal drama — which came to an end last year after six seasons — landed eight nominations in total, including for Dominic West, Elizabeth Debecki, Lesley Manville and Salim Daw in the performance categories. In any given year, British TV can be relied on to provide plenty in the way of crime drama, and 2023 was no different. Between these returning series and newcomers A Town Called Malice, Blue Lights, Marlow, Payback, Rebus, Steeltown Murders, The Gold, The Sixth Commandment, Wolf and more, crime continued to flourish on the small screen.
Happily though, that was far from all that UK TV offered this year. There was fantasy too, in the form of Netflix’s South London super-powers drama Supacell, ghost detective series Lockwood & Co., Greek and Roman mythology series Kaos, and sci-fi in Prime Video’s The Rig.
Add to all those the romances, dramas inspired by real-life, and several other book adaptations, period and otherwise plus music-based dramas Champion and This Town, and it was a pretty full slate.

The BBC’s latest Agatha Christie adaptation concluded last night ahead of ITV’s Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? from over the Easter Weekend.

U.K. public service broadcaster ITV launched proprietary streamer Itvx almost exactly 12 months ago with a star-studded event in London featuring talent including Helen Bonham Carter (the lead in Itvx original “Nolly”) and “Without Sin” star Vicky McClure.
Signalling its commitment to the new platform (which replaced much-maligned catch-up service ITV Hub), ITV CEO Carolyn McCall also directed $1.6 billion into original content for Itvx in 2023 alone, a bold move which briefly hit the company’s share price. “I know the London stock market was quite surprised,” she told Variety earlier this year. “But we knew that we had to do that to make this step change. Because without that, we wouldn’t be a powerful U.K. streamer.”
Itvx is primarily a free-to-watch AVOD platform, echoing ITV’s position as a commercial Psb, although it does offer an ad-free premium tier which also offers paying subscribers access to BritBox U.

Fly on the wall? Pah! The wall is all the way over there! These days, viewers want to be flies buzzing right around the noses of the people making the headlines, close enough to tell what they had for breakfast. And thanks to true story TV dramas, they can.
It’s been a long time since ropey Lifetime Movies were as good as it got for true story TV. In recent years, British production companies have stepped up in a big way to serve a growing appetite for fact-based drama, but all too often the real-life TV dramas of today focus on haunting tales of history’s most gruesome murders. If you’re sick of serial killers, there are plenty of non-murder true stories to enjoy in drama form, from very public scandals to ordinary people doing extraordinary things, to the kinds of tragedies it’s important that we never forget.
