The Best Films of the Decade (aka "The Naughties")

Best Films Of The Decade (aka The Naughties) From Alex & Terry

List # 1

By Alex Simon

When Terry and I initially discussed writing these lists, I had a tough time thinking back on 20 films over the past decade which I was really taken with, thinking that movies have sunk so low over the past ten years, that even choosing a dozen would be a short-order job. Thirty minutes into it, my list had nearly 60 titles! After much cutting, pasting, and re-cutting and pasting, here are my top 20 films (in no particular order) of the first decade of the 21st century, dubbed by many as “the naughties.” --A.S.

1.No Country for Old Men (Coen Brothers, 2007) An elegiac blend of stark beauty and full-throttle despair from two of our finest filmmakers, set in the contemporary American West. Every frame is damn near flawless, and would have been an even more perfect vehicle for the late Sam Peckinpah. »

The 15 Most Anticipated Films of 2010

15 hours ago | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

So you’ve unwrapped all of your Christmas presents, received three copies of District 9 from multiple uncommunicative family members, and the year of 2009 is about to be wrapped up. The debate is over: 2009 has been a great year for film. So what do you do now?

Why, start thinking about what’s around the corner, of course!

While there’s less in the way of interesting sci-fi, as 2009 will surely be remembered for, 2010 has plenty of interesting new films in store, as well as some remakes, reboots and sequels. Here’s a list of the 15 most anticipated films of 2010, in order of release, followed by a minefield of movies you might consider avoiding.

The Wolfman (February 12)

Originally scheduled for release this year and pushed back due to production delays, it seems that Joe Johnston’s The Wolfman is finally upon us. While news of reshoots and delays always send »

The M/C Decade List #30 - 21: Batman, Miyazaki, and a vampire in love

20 hours ago | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

For a full description of the purpose and the parameters of this list, read the introduction. You can read #50 - #41 here. You can read #40 - #31 here. #30 / "The Dark Knight" Christopher Nolan isn't slumming it when he works in the mainstream superhero genre.  He treats Batman as an archetype worth serious exploration, and by adding The Joker and Two-Face into the mix, two of the richest of the Batman villains in terms of subtextual worth, he gives himself almost too much to juggle in one movie.  Thankfully, though, Nolan and his brother, along with David Goyer, found »

Bazmann’s Christmas Address

25 December 2009 7:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

It’s been a great year for the British film industry. It kicked off with the British invasion of the Oscars, with notable wins for Kate Winslet, and Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire. The huge amount of British Actors plying their trade successfully in Hollywood continued to grow, with Scot Gerard Butler particularly in demand with parts in Gamer, The Ugly Truth and Law Abiding Citizen.

British filmmakers have been responsible for some of the more interesting films this year. Duncan Jone’s Moon was a brilliant yet under appreciated sci-fi drama. Fish Tank and Harry Brown lead the way for low budget drama. Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus finally found a distributor. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince became the highest grossing British movie of all time.

British film festivals Raindance and the BFI London Film Festival saw record attendances, and showcased some great films from home, »

John’s 10 Biggest Movie Surprises of 2009

24 December 2009 12:56 PM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

I’ll be up front with you: the list you’re about to read wasn’t what I had in store for you. As I sat at my desk and prepared to crank out what would be another top ten list of 2009, I realized that I was utterly ill-equipped to do so. As many great films as I witnessed this year, I missed just as many that I’m sure I’d enjoy: A Serious Man. The Fantastic Mr. Fox. The Hurt LockerThe Brothers Bloom.

I know. Just thinking about it makes me sick. But I saw enough to be confident in saying that 2009 was an extremely good year for movies — from blockbusters to indie pictures, we’ve witnessed some great films and surprising debuts from unique filmmakers.

What follows isn’t a list of the “best” films of 2009, but instead is a list of the most surprising, excellent »

The 10 Best Films of the Decade

24 December 2009 7:29 AM, PST | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

Daniel Day-Lewis in Paul Thomas Anderson's 2007 masterpiece, There Will Be Blood. There’s no getting around it: ten-best lists are arbitrary and cruel. Summing up as cinematically rich a decade as this one is impossible, and any such attempt can promise nothing but blood feuds and celluloid psychosis. So, let’s give it a try! 10. The Dark Knight (Christopher Nolan, 2008) The first decade of this century will be remembered as the moment when comics finally conquered the cinema. At the dawn of the decade, Comic-con was just another massive geek-fest that studios barely acknowledged. Now it’s a necessary stop on any summer blockbuster’s publicity blitz. For studio chiefs in need of $50 million-plus opening weekends, it’s become a mandatory ritual to offer their first-born (director, stars, t-shirts) to the fanboys. From Spiderman to Sin City, the fan gods have been kind (and the studios have cashed in »

What was not known, is that a second poster is revealed when you are able to make it through a maze created by someone else! You can check out that poster below. New Inception Poster Doesn't Give Us Much

23 December 2009 11:52 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Unless the marketing people over at Warner Bros. are doing a really bad job promoting it, Christopher Nolan's Inception promises to be a complete mind-fuck in cinema form. Will still have barely any clue as to what exactly the film is about, even with the international trailer that was released and then unreleased early this morning (in fairness, that could be attributed to the fact that I don't speak French). We only got the first poster a little over a week ago, thanks to someone brilliant enough to figure out the viral game, but with the first feature trailer to debut with Sherlock Holmes this Friday, we are now getting another look as to how they are going to promote the film on paper. Playing off the same effect used at the end of the teaser trailer, the new art doesn't really give us anything new, other than displaying »

Movie Poster Round-Up: Inception, Robin Hood, Clash of the Titans

23 December 2009 11:27 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Along with all the trailers coming out for next year's big blockbusters, we've also got a slew of new posters being released at the same time since the two seem to go hand in hand. Let's take a quick spin around the web and see what kinds of artwork these talented graphic design people have come up with. Among the more intriguing ones of the bunch are a couple of posters for Christopher Nolan's Inception, which as some have pointed out, seem to have a slight resemblance to early posters for The Dark Knight. I still have no idea what this movie is about, but I definitely want to find out. Other newly released one sheets include a pair of epic Clash of the Titans posters, a wanna-be epic Season of the Witch poster, and a very stylish poster for the new Tom Cruise / Cameron Diaz movie Knight and Day. »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Five

23 December 2009 10:10 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Hippie Hippie Shake

Opens: 2010

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby

Director: Beeban Kidron

Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.

Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.

Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »

The Best of the Decade: 2000-2009

23 December 2009 9:56 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

A best of the decade list is an incredible thing to consider. The Aughts were ripe with imagination and originality. The past ten years also came jam packed with many new visionary directors that changed the cinematic landscape forever. Yet, at the same time, it was also a decade wrought with remakes, rip-offs, ten-year late sequels, and films based on preexisting toy properties, comic books, and amusement park rides. George Lucas offended almost everyone by dusting off his Star Wars mythos and adding copious amounts of CGI to it. And Batman, a caped figure in tights who last flourished in the trippy sixties, managed to crawl head and shoulders above the rest at the box office to be crowned king. Thus proving that the so-called "geek" or "fanboy" truly ruled the silver screen over the course of this tumultuous past decade. Today, we look at the ten films that ruled »

Trailer Watch: ‘The Karate Kid’ and ‘Sex and the City 2’

23 December 2009 9:45 AM, PST | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

In what has to be some sort of Hollywood record, even more trailers arrived online since we last met … and it’s starting to become a bit of a chore to keep up with all of them. While we’re expecting the latest trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Inception to hit at anytime, here are two more previews for a couple of buzzed-about 2010 films.   The Karate Kid   Nope, they’re not re-releasing the old 1984 classic starring Ralph Maccio and Pat Morita. Instead, this is the 2010 remake, complete with hip-hop tunes, Will Smith’s kid Jaden, and Jackie Chan as the lovable martial arts mentor. Like in the previous incarnation, this one follows a kid and his mom who move overseas to start a new life (the original had them moving from New Jersey to...

'Nine' Star Daniel Day-Lewis Has No Interest In Starring In A Hollywood Blockbuster

23 December 2009 9:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

There are many reasons that Daniel Day-Lewis is considered one of the finest actors currently working in the movie business, with one of the most important ones being his highly selective process in choosing film roles.

Sure, it would be awesome to see Day-Lewis take on an iconic role in a Hollywood tentpole picture. How much fun would it be to see him in one of Christopher Nolan's "Batman" movies, for example? But don't hold your breath, as the "Nine" star recently told MTV's Josh Horowitz that the chances of him signing on for a blockbuster are highly unlikely.

"[This is] not meant to belittle those films or the people [who work on them], because there are people that need to do those films and love to do those films — they can be fantastically entertaining for the people who love to see them — but it's not for me," Day-Lewis said about the prospects of starring in a franchise film. »

French Version of Inception Trailer Arrives Online

23 December 2009 8:16 AM, PST | FusedFilm | See recent FusedFilm news »

It is no secret that the next trailer for Chris Nolan’s Inception will be attached to Sherlock Holmes on its opening on Christmas. That being said MakingOf has gotten a French version of the trailer. I saw a translation of the dialog in Fs.Net’s comment section so I am posting it here, so that you will no what is being said in the trailer.

“Leo’s character is explaining that an idea can have enormous power. It has the power to build cities, an idea can transform the world and rewrite the rules and thats why he needs to get a hold of it. The antagonist is hiding something and Leo”s character needs to figure out what it is and therefore go to the root (inception) of the idea of the crime. Here is the translation of the words written: Votre esprit= Your mind est la »

Vive La Inception: A French Trailer Surfaces

23 December 2009 8:00 AM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

Some observations of Christopher Nolan's Inception, based on this French-dubbed trailer:

1. Dreidel!

2. Life is actually a series of maps. When God is done playing with one city for the day, he rolls it up and puts it in a drawer.

3. A glass of water!

4. Trafficjambreaker!

5. More water! (Way more.)

6. Le Chevalier Noir is how I'd like to be addressed at all times.

Verdict: How do you say "confused" in French? »

New Inception Trailer and Poster

23 December 2009 7:31 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

So far, nothing has made much sense about Christopher Nolan's thriller Inception, not the few revealed plot details, nor even the trailer. The latest poster is no help in that regard, showing only a cityscape. Considering that the movie is about the "architecture of the mind," does this mean that the entire city be inside the mind?

It's doubtful that the latest trailer will answer these questions, either. Screening before Sherlock Holmes, several websites that saw the trailer at a recent press screening have done their best to interpret the images and voice-over from Leonardo DiCaprio, which sounds something like this:

What's the most resilient form of parasite? An idea. An idea has the power to build a city ... to change the world, and re-write all the rules ... and that's why I need to steal it.

'Inception' International Trailer Emerges, Speaks To You In French

23 December 2009 7:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

There's a new trailer up online for "Inception." Just one catch though: it's in French. Given how little we've seen of Chris Nolan's summer 2010 sci-fi adventure starring Leonardo DiCaprio, I'll take what I can get. It's not like anyone's been forthcoming about the plot. The visuals in this new trailer are damn cool however. Check it out, courtesy of MakingOf.

Sadly, the trailer has been pulled. We'll see it again soon I'm sure, and in English.

'Inception' Gets A French Trailer

23 December 2009 6:54 AM, PST | AMC - Script to Screen | See recent AMC - Script to Screen news »

MakingOf has posted a pretty damn cool French trailer for Christopher Nolan's new sci-fi thriller "Inception" starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Ellen Page.

The film is a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind that follows a CEO-type guy who becomes involved in a blackmailing scandal.

The trailer looks freaking awesome even though its in French, expect the English version to pop up soon and maybe this new trailer will be in front of "Sherlock Holmes."

Inception is due out next summer in July 16, 2010.

International 'Inception' Trailer Arrives Online

By: Zachary Herrmann

Votre esprit est la scène du crime.

Translation: Your mind is the scene of the crime, or less literally, there's a low-res Inception trailer online and it's in French (courtesy of Making Of). If that's all you need to hear, then just go below the jump and we've got the trailer embedded for you (note: you can see the trailer over at SciFi Squad; click on the link below).

If you're curious as to what exactly is being said in the trailer, Daemon's Movies went to the trouble of translating things for us. After checking out the translation, I'd say the voice-over is intriguing but definitely not the least bit revealing. Christopher Nolan and the Warner Bros. promotional team seem to be playing things close to the chest, and after catching this extended look at what they've got on hand, it looks like the mystery could really play to their advantage. »
