Was twice nominated for Broadway's Tony Award: in 1968 as author of
Best Play nominee "A Day in the Death of Joe Egg," and in 1975 as
author of Best Play nominee "The National Health."
His play, "Passion Play," was awarded the 1984 Drama Logue Award for Outstanding Production at the Mark Taper Forum Theatre in Los Angeles, California.
His play, "The National Health," on Broadway in New York City was nominated for a 1975 Antoinette Perry (Tony) Award for Best Play.
He has freely admitted that several of his plays are autobiographical. It has been widely remarked that Nichols has, in these plays, a tendency to depict himself in a most unflattering light.
