The 2024 Cannes Classics sidebar will open with a restored version of French filmmaker Abel Gance’s silent epic Napolean.
A major work of the silent era, Napolean has taken sixteen years to restore. The festival said today that “various sources were used to rediscover the original storyline” of the seven-hour feature, with reels found at the Cinémathèque française, the Cnc, the Cinémathèque de Toulouse and the Cinémathèque de Corse, as well as in Denmark, Serbia, Italy, Luxembourg and New York.
Filmmaker and restoration expert Georges Mourier and his team worked frame-by-frame and reviewed nearly 100 kilometers of film. The festival said Gance’s original editing notes and correspondence with his editor, found at the Bnf, “made it possible to re-edit the film in its original version.”
Celebrated by scholars for its technical and aesthetic innovations, Napolean premiered at the Paris Opera on April 7, 1927, in the presence of French President Gaston Doumergue...

This post contains spoilers for episodes 3 & 4 of "The Fall of the House of Usher."
Horror director Mike Flanagan rarely relies on frequent jumpscares to deliver shocks and thrills, and his oeuvre primarily consists of raw, emotion-driven stories that aim to excavate the depths of the human psyche. To no one's surprise, his "The Fall of the House of Usher" — a modern reimagining of Edgar Allan Poe's short story of the same name, amalgamated with a dozen references to his work — also dives deep into the rot of emotions that fester, until they're potent enough to topple a formidable personal empire. Apart from the grisly deaths that mark almost every episode in this limited series, there are two instances of fairly graphic animal harm/death that can be potentially disturbing, especially for those who love and adore cats, whose presence takes on a special significance in the context of the Ushers and Poe's work.

Creator Mike Flanagan’s latest and final series collaboration with Netflix, “The Fall of the House of Usher,” takes on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. Much like “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” Flanagan’s latest uses a classic short story as the central narrative framework to remix a variety of Poe’s macabre poems and short stories but with Flanagan’s signature pathos. Unlike previous Netflix series, “The Fall of the House of Usher” eschews the familiar melancholy and dials up the gallows humor for a twisted tale that’s unafraid to get grisly.
In the process, however, it’s less effective at organically adapting Poe.
Like the source story, “The Fall of the House of Usher” begins with Auguste Dupin (Carl Lumbly) called to a crumbling estate for a final meeting with the deteriorating Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood). With time drawing to a close and haunted by horrific...

Hey, "MasterChef" fans. Tonight, July 27, 2022, another new episode of MasterChef's current season 12 did indeed hit the air with judges: Gordon Ramsay, Aarón Sanchez, and Joe Bastianich. The contestants had to replicate some sample desserts for this latest, elimination challenge. Since Christian had immunity this week, he was able to choose in which order the contestants picked the sample desserts they wanted to replicate. He chose Willie first, and he chose to replicate a chocolate moose cake. Shelly was second, and decided to go with the hardest dessert, which was the Napolean. Everyone was shocked that she chose it.

We learned so many shocking secrets, but some gutted our emotions.
You'll need a large box of kleenex for Nine Perfect Strangers Season 1 Episode 6.
It was the only episode that posted a warning so far for suicidal ideation and mental health triggers. That seems appropriate since September is Suicide Awareness month.
After Masha upped the dosage again, everyone's dreams and hallucinations became more vivid. We found out that Zoe was the key to her family communicating with a dead Zach.
Heather: Did you see Zach?
Napolean: There he is! Zachary!
Heather: Zach!
Zach: Hey mom. What is with the shrooms? Did the zero-tolerance policy go out the window?

Between a 21st birthday party and some expected visitors, Nine Perfect Strangers Season 1 Episode 5 was, by far, my favorite.
The guests struggled to tell the difference between reality and fiction thanks to the higher dosage in their smoothies. Some of these realities were hilarious, while others were heartbreaking.
In the middle of the night, Zoe envisioned her dead twin brother Zach. She thought she must be messed up since he's not real.
Zach: Why do you keep telling everyone we weren’t close?
Zoe: You’re not real. You’re not real.
Zach: I’m standing right here, Zoe.
Permalink: I’m standing right here, Zoe. Added: August 31, 2021
It was the first time Zoe truly expressed her grief. She's constantly in denial and watching her admit how lonely she was made me cry. It's never easy to lose a sibling but to lose her twin crushed her.
She missed him every day,...

In the Nine Perfect Strangers series premiere review, I complained that we didn't know much about Lars and Carmel.
In Nine Perfect Strangers Season 1 Episode 4, we learned more about their backstories, as well as Tony's, and it was an interesting ride.
We also saw more of the weird relationship between Masha, Yao, and Deliah, but I think we've only scratched the surface.
Masha truly believes in her protocol and fixing her guests, no matter the consequences.
I have been feeling unlike myself part of today. Carmel says she isn’t herself and my husband is definitely not himself so I ask again, are you drugging us?

When you combine bold storytelling, dysfunctional relationships, uncomfortable truths, a health spa, and an all-star cast, you get pure fun.
Nine Perfect Strangers, an original Hulu series based on the New York best-selling novel by Liane Moriarty, explores how nine spa guests' lives change when they meet at Tranquillum House, a wellness spa.
Full disclosure: I've read the book, and I reread it recently in anticipation of the series. The series kept the heart of the novel and only made the characters more fun to watch.
In Nine Perfect Strangers Season 1 Episode 1, we're introduced to all nine guests, the health consultants, and the director Masha, played by Nicole Kidman. Kidman truly shined since you could never tell if she wanted to heal her guests or if she had a sinister plan.
Masha: The people that come here live fairly good lives. They come here for the suffering.
Frances: I don't want to suffer.

Devil’s Night: Dawn of the Nain Rouge is, on paper, an intriguing prospect… Part crime thriller, part supernatural horror, the film follows a pair of local police officers from a small town just outside of Detroit being plagued by mysterious murders. As the evidence mounts up, they can no longer deny the presence of a long forgotten supernatural entity, the Nain Rouge, the city’s harbinger of doom. See told you it was intriguing… Whats even more intriguing is that the film stars Nathan Mathers, younger brother of Eminem and features music from Eminem’s D12 bandmate Swifty McVay – who also has a role in...

Now here’s a historical epic that tackles a little known event (at least here in the states) involving an act of rebellion against Great Britain. Is this film about the American Revolution (that we know about) in the1770s? No, maybe it presents another version of India’s fight against British rule? Wrong, nor does is it present another incident from “the troubles” that plagued Ireland. 2019 marks the 200th anniversary of a tragedy stemming from a rebellion against the Crown and Parliament by her own countrymen. That’s right, it was not on foreign soil, rather it was St. Peter’s Fields in Manchester UK where much British blood was spilled. Harkening back to the military victory 16 years before against Napolean’s French forces, the local press dubbed this dark Monday Peterloo.
This docudrama actually begins with the end of that battle, when the Duke of Wellington triumphed at the Battle of Waterloo.
