The Crystal Maze, Cyber Zone, Fort Boyard... We look back at the UK game shows that dared to ask more than just quiz questions...
If the idea of yet another TV game show with an uninspiring presenter and ever so slight spin on the tried and tested Q&A formula fills you with apathy, you're not alone. Although TV quiz shows often rake in the viewers for a relatively low production budget, hence their popularity with TV studios, the whole genre feels a little stagnant. Perhaps it's the rise of the Internet, a general change in viewer culture, and the changing tastes that come with it. While many shows of the past delighted audiences with images of shiny new appliances, cars, and holidays to far-off destinations, today's shows mostly award cold, hard, and boring cash. Great for the winner, but not too interesting for the viewer. Give...

The dungeoneers on Citv’s Knightmare met a wide range of fantasy figures, from monks to mages to thieves. Here are 10 of the best…
“Mike, you’re in a room. There’s a cauliflower on the floor.”
Children aren’t very good at improv. That’s why there were never any on Whose Line Is It Anyway.
Basing Citv adventure game Knightmare around the improvised encounters of a temporarily blinded child guided on a parlous quest by three friends with a shaky grasp on the precise qualities that distinguish left from right, then, was a risky approach. You just couldn’t rely on early nineties kids to pull their weight in Knightmare’s improv scenes. It turns out a diet of Willy Wonka’s Dweebs and Vanilla Ice lyrics isn’t conducive to thinking on your feet.
That meant the weight of responsibility fell on the shoulders of Knightmare’s recurring actors.

Jokers, circus masters and demonic dolls. Which TV characters terrify you? Den Of Geek asked its writers that very question…
The subconscious is a terrible place; dark, mysterious and peopled by spectres from the past. As a bit of a laugh then, we sent our writers journeying into theirs and asked them to drag out any TV terrors they found lurking in the shadows.
Some television fears had been ensconced there since childhood, others were more recent tenants. Some were morally terrifying; human beings with icy hearts capable of atrocities, others were simply… atrocities.
Join us as we count down in order of terror from the sort-of-creepy to the downright terrifying, the 50 TV characters that, for whatever reason, give our writers chills. It’s by no means an exhaustive list, so feel free to fill in gaps by adding your own peculiar television nightmares below…

It's the stuff of dreams for children who grew up watching Citv in the '80s and '90s; the chance to become a dungeoneer for the day and to take part in the fantasy gameshow Knightmare. But this dream could become a reality at the first ever Knightmare convention in Norwich.
Taking place on May 9-11 at Epic studios, where the show was originally filmed, the convention is being billed as a "must-attend event" for nostalgia-loving kids TV fanatics.
Guests expected to attend include the show's creator Tim Child and the actors from the show, Hugo Myatt, who played the unforgettable dungeon master Treguard, and Mark Knight, who played Lord Fear.
Also included in the £15 ticket are Q&A sessions with celebrity guests, a workshop on designing a dungeon room and the chance to play a Knightmare room using the original blue screen technology.

Hugo Myatt is playing Tregard again, Peter Lord wants to take Morph out of the mothballs, and now Mike Batt, Wombles and Katie Melua song-writer extraordinaire, has announced plans to bring the Wombles back in force. Make Fruit Salads 1p again, reintroduce Baker Days, and let us gorge on school dinners made entirely from trans fats, and the time tunnel to our childhoods will be complete.
The Guardian reports that following his gaining a controlling interest in Wombling Copyright Holdings (now there's a company name), co-creator Mike Batt wishes to bring the eco-conscious characters back with "two new 26-part TV series, a feature-length movie and an interactive Womble World experience". Knightmare's new special episode has been released online.
The cult children's TV show has been revived as part of YouTube's Geek Week.
The new episode is produced by series creator Tim Child and features original cast members Mark Knight, Clifford Barry and Hugo Myatt.
"It's great to be back, it really is," said Barry. "It's astonishing, isn't it? I've done a lot of programmes over the years and it's still the one I get fan mail for, 20 years on."
Actress and comedian Isy Suttie - who features in the episode - added: "I'm a massive fan of the show and have been since I was a kid. I absolutely loved it and used to watch it every week and really wanted to be a contestant on it. So it is like a dream come true."

Knightmare makes a triumphant return as part of YouTube's Geek Week. See for yourself, here...
From the nostalgia-synapse-firing opening credits to the dungeoneer's last step, this new Knightmare episode released as part of YouTube's Geek Week is a job well done. Isy Suttie (Peep Show) makes for a fine addition to the cast, and seeing Hugo Myatt re-don his Tregard gear is a joy unrivalled on a Monday morning.
Perhaps the best thing about this return to Knightmare Castle is that it's a proper episode, not a tongue-in-cheek parody or a knowing pastiche. It's good, clean, CGI fantasy fun. You can almost smell the Friday afternoon P.E. kit mouldering away in your school bag and taste the beans on toast...

Children's TV adventure series Knightmare is returning in August for a one-off special episode filmed for YouTube...
Enter, Stranger...
Courtesy of Citv's Old Skool weekend and Challenge TV, 2013 has been a good year for Knightmare fans. It's about to get even better, as creator Tim Child has produced a one-off special episode of the children's adventure series to mark Geek Week, YouTube's seven-day celebration of "science fiction, comics, gaming and science" running between the 4th and 10th of August.
Returning for the special (because it wouldn't be Knightmare without him) is Hugo Myatt as dungeon master Tregard, who is to be joined by Peep Show's Isy Suttie, Harry Potter's Jessie Cave, and "four British YouTube stars, Dan Howell, Phil Lester, Emma Blackery and Stuart Ashen".
For old time's sake then, here's a peek at Knightmare's opening credits:

Challenge TV has revealed on Twitter that it has picked up the rights to children's TV classic Knightmare.
The classic Citv series, which featured Hugo Myatt playing the Dungeon Master Treguard, originally aired between 1987 and 1994.
Knightmare featured cutting-edge virtual reality gameplay and featured children taking on the roles of Dungeoneers and Advisors as they attempted to navigate their way around Knightmare Castle and various challenges with only a knapsack and the show's famous 'Helmet of Justice' to help them.
Writing on Twitter, the official Challenge TV account said: "Huge News!! We can now proudly announce Knightmare series 1 & 2 is coming to Challenge Friday 10th May at 10:30pm."
The show will also be repeated on Saturday mornings.
Knightmare was a popular part of Citv's Old Skool Weekend earlier this year.

Running between 1987 and 1994 on ITV, Knightmare was a bizarre mix of early computer-generation and hand-drawn fantasy animation based in a world of dungeons and dragons. The main lure of the show was not the prospect of watching young kids waddling around for 30 minutes with a silly mask (the infamous helmet of justice) blinding them from danger, but rather the dominating and mysterious figure of Treguard of Dunshelm, played by experienced thesp Hugo Myatt. Treguard's job was to assist the kids (known as dungeoneers) as they trapsed through levels of dodgy bluescreen animation, (more)...
