The 21st Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) Awards, which highlight Irish filmmakers, television creators and performers, saw Pat Collins’ That They May Face The Rising Sun win Best Film in an upset. Despite earning a second-best 11 nominations, the top award was its only win.
Lies We Tell all with three wins: for Director Lisa Mulcahy, Lead Actress Agnes O’Casey, and Best Script. It came in with 13nominations.
Oscar-winner Cillian Murphy repeated his Best Actor win at the Academy Awards for Oppenheimer with a win for Lead Actor. In the supporting categories, Paul Mescal won for All of Us Strangers and Alison Oliver topped all for Saltburn.
Oppenheimer was named Best International Film, Emma Stone was Best Actress, and Paul Giamatti won International Actor for The Holdovers.
In the television drama categories, Kin was the winner for series, directing, script, lead actress Clare Dune, and supporting actress Maria Doyle Kennedy.

In ordinary times, Paul Mescal’s life would be dramatically different after starring in one of the buzziest TV shows of the year. But for the most part, not much as changed for the actor since Hulu’s premiere last week of “Normal People,” a sprawling love story about two Irish teenagers.
The 24-year-old Mescal is self-isolating in a flat in London, as the city is shut down due to coronavirus. But there are signs that Mescal’s life is about to quickly change. His agents are getting calls about new roles for the breakout actor, and he’s quickly amassed more than 250,000 followers on Instagram. Even more bewildering: a neck chain that his character Connell wears in the 12-episode series now has its own fan Instagram account.

All seminal love stories have to recognize the seminal love stories that preceded them. Whether it’s the forbidden desire driving “Romeo and Juliet” and “The Great Gatsby,” or the chaotic passion fueling “Bonnie and Clyde” and “Natural Born Killers,” great romances of all sorts are born from the same universal emotion that spurs formative dalliances and lifelong relationships. Love finds many forms, but it remains at the core of all love stories. To rekindle the flame, each new entry just has to recognize it’s been told before, and then find compelling reasons to tell it again now.
So imagine my delight when less than an hour into “Normal People,” Hulu’s immaculate adaptation of a novel already hailed as a modern classic, I hear Imogen Heap’s millennial dirge “Hide and Seek” play over a swooning montage of young love. As the well-off outcast Marianne (played by Daisy Edgar-Jones...

So few women are allowed to be cads onscreen that spotting one is as an exotic and unexpected a sight as a flamingo on the underground. Gemma Arterton’s Vita Sackville-West is one such creature – carnal and careless – Caitlin Moran’s lady sex pirate made flesh. In short…a cad. And it is a joy to behold.
As, in fact, is Vita & Virginia in its entirety. Together director Chanya Button and her (fabulous) co-writer Eileen Atkins (who penned the original play in 1992) have crafted a singular love letter to the relationship between Virginia Woolf and the delightful cad who inspired Orlando and remained her lifelong friend.
Predictably Virginia (Elizabeth Debicki) is less accessible than the irrepressible Vita, about whom we have learned scandalous intimacies within moments. They meet at a party – a gathering of the outrageous Bloomsbury set – Vita has inveigled an invitation solely to meet Virginia. Virginia remains emotionally detached from the crowd,...

What a busy twelve months it’s been for costume design. Really though, this art, or craft, or business (Deborah Nadoolman Landis insists it is definitely a business) gets more talked about each year. 2013 was especially exciting however as it seemed every month something even more thrilling arrived to fawn over. In the last few weeks alone we have had The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Sleepy Hollow, and now American Hustle and The Wolf of Wall Street on the horizon. Dipping back further, it was Stoker that got us excited about subtext, The Great Gatsby that slammed the lid on that twenties revival once and for all, and Behind the Candelabra that put Michael Douglas in a 16ft fox fur cape and white brocade jumpsuit.

You know how everyone hates Bono? Well, Neil McCormick hated him first. He hated him so much, in fact, that he has a gun pointed at his face. This is Neil’s story.
Flashing back to 1970s Ireland, lax journalist Neil (Ben Barnes) is eager to set up a band of his own after rival Paul “Bono” Hewson (Martin McCann) joins high school rockband The Hype. Using his relationship with Bono to ensure his younger brother’s (Robert Sheehan) rejection from the band, Neil and Ivan instead set up their own group, quickly falling into The Hype’s – now U2 – ever growing shadow. Borrowing money from the local gangster (Stanley Towsend), the McCormack brothers move to London where they begin a near-year-long search for a willing record label. Despite finding an albeit lesser success with producer Hammond (Peter Serafinowicz) and band Shook Up!, Neil continues to undermines his own luck...
