During Trey Parker and Matt Stone‘s guest commentary on one of the episodes of Look Around You, they are pretty clear that the show is either something you find hilarious, and something you can’t understand watching at all. It’s hard to argue with that assessment. The show is so deadpan, and so various with its humor, that it’s difficult to describe a great deal of what makes it funny. It’s hard even to describe the theory.
From creators Robert Popper (Peep Show, Hot Fuzz), and Peter Serafinowicz (Couples Retreat, Shaun of the Dead), Look Around You explores the nonsensical wonders of science as presenters Jack Morgan (Popper) and Peter Packard (Serafinowicz) guide viewers through a series of Pythonesque spoofs of educational films of the 70’s and 80’s.

A summer film that distills the best of what a blockbuster should be, Inception is the thinking man’s action film that marries drama, wicked fast pacing, and the designation as the best big budget movie so far this year.
In literature, Marcel Proust’s “The Remembrance Of Things” is thought of a classic because of its exploration of memory and the acute moments that are triggered by the nature of living. It’s a familiar smell, it’s a taste that triggers flashes from a time that has forgotten. It’s a wonderful distillation of the nature of the mind and how it is able to start lines of thought merely started by a bite of Madeline cookies,...

The 16th annual San Antonio Film Festival, which runs June 23-27, is truly a great combination of celebrating local talent and international cinema, screening films produced in Texas to ones produced in Europe, South America and the Middle East.
There’s also a distinct flavor of socially aware fictional narratives and documentaries, including films about Tibetan refugees, migrant workers, the 2008 Presidential election, alcoholism and genocide. But, that’s not to say the fest is a totally serious affair as there’s also several genre films about the World Cup, sheep rustlers, dancers, crooks and other ne’er-do-wells. It looks like a fun mix.
The full lineup of films is below. The way the festival runs is that films screen in blocks in three different theaters. A “block” of films will generally contain a feature or two (feature = film that is 50 mins. or more), plus several shorts. In the lineup I have up,...
