It’s here, the newest Netflix thriller adapted from one of Harlan Coben’s ludicrously twist-packed, secret-filled crime mystery novels. This one comes adapted by Danny Brocklehurst with the same UK team that made The Five, Safe, The Stranger and Stay Close, and once again stars Richard Armitage in a central role.
Fool Me Once is the story of military helicopter pilot Maya Stern, a captain who loses her career in a scandal and suffers two bereavements in short succession. It’s fast-paced, kind of ridiculous viewing that takes you down an extremely twisty path before tying everything up in a big not-exactly-watertight-but-it’ll-do-fine knot – which makes it pretty perfect viewing for a brain-fogged New Year’s Day after all of December’s indulgences.

Luther’s back. Being banged up at the end of Series 5 didn’t stop that growly genius from taking on a new case and a new villain in Bond-inspired Netflix movie The Fallen Sun. And, since most of his former colleagues were spectacularly killed in the line of duty, the man’s being joined by a fresh cast.
Dermot Crowley returns as John Luther’s former boss Dsu Martin Schenk, who’s joined by Cynthia Erivo as Luther’s replacement on the team, and far from his biggest fan. Going toe-to-toe with Idris Elba’s John will be Andy Serkis as surveillance tech billionaire David Robey, possibly the detective’s darkest foe yet.

Luther: The Fallen Sun is an action movie directed by Jamie Payne starring Idris Elba. With Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis and Dermot Crowley.
Idris Elba is the main attraction in this thriller that mixes James Bond with serial killers and gruesome crimes: without being a great movie, it has a little bit of everything to entertain you on a Friday night and delight horror thriller lovers.
Movie Review
It doesn’t always work, but it knows how to correctly apply the rules of the genre and borrow ideas from other referential films. The ideas worked before, they work now, even if everything is blatantly “familiar” and the bad guy is not exactly Hannibal Lecter.
It has its charm, its BBC-like “British” photography and perhaps precisely because of that, it sometimes tends to drift over to the made-for-tv film side of the road, with some “easy” and not very elaborated sequences.

Feature incarnation of the Idris Elba cop drama sees a ropey but savage snuff-porn plot get too much explicit attention
Neil Cross’s smash-hit BBC TV crime drama now gets its own standalone feature film, with Idris Elba returning as the troubled London police officer John Luther, effectively continuing the story from the end of the fifth season. This may well play very effectively to the show’s fanbase and there’s certainly an alpha supporting cast including Cynthia Erivo, Andy Serkis and Hattie Morahan.
But I have to say – and those squeamish about spoilers and cliches had better look away now – that without the extended context of longform TV, the greater emphasis on explicit, violent horror is a bit exhausting. The serial-killer accessories feel hand-me-down; the Scandi noir touch is spurious and storylines in the movies about evil criminal plans to livestream snuff-porn are frankly always lame and implausible.

Can a summer movie about Sherlock Holmes’ sister, Enola Holmes, live up to its viral trailer and Nancy Springer’s source material? No shit, Sherlock.
The beloved character of Enola, with whom Gen Z grew up, becomes a winning heroine for a new generation in this plucky mystery that pulls from Springer’s novels and Nancy Drew novellas, while remaining as modern and magnificent as its trailer promised.
To adapt the book into something a bit more sophisticated to appeal to older audiences, director Harry Bradbeer (who got his start on television) has brought a healthy dose of eccentricity to the proceedings. And his leading lady, Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), proves to be more than up to the challenge of walking the fine line between shy and eccentric in her performance.

Filmmaker Gavin Hood is at his best when he gets political. The less said about his superhero outing X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the better, while Ender’s Game underwhelmed. However, after his breakthrough Tsotsi, efforts like Rendition, though especially Eye in the Sky and now Official Secrets, show how engaged he is when he’s passionate about a cause. Here, telling the true story of a British whistleblower in the lead up to the 2003 Iraq War, he’s found a terrific vehicle for his talents. The film is angry, urgent, and effortlessly well made. Hitting theaters this week, it’s a mature and serious work that’s well worth your time. The 1996 Doctor Who television movie remains an intriguing footnote in the history of the franchise, bridging the gap between Classic and New Who without capturing the tone of either. Still, the movie gave us Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor, who has become the star of many official audio dramas from Big Finish, as well as a cameo appearance in a recent Doctor Who season. This October will see the release of the new audio drama Ravenous 4, which will pit McGann against not one but four Masters in a conclusion to the Ravenous series that kicked off in April 2018.

WarnerMedia has denied that owner At&T is considering selling the European arm of HBO. This comes after a report in the Financial Times this morning.
WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey has put his name to the on-the-record denial, an unusual move for a major media company. The newspaper had claimed that At&T had held internal discussions about a sale of HBO Europe to help pay down its debt.
“We normally do not comment on speculation, but when a news outlet is advised that their reporting is factually incorrect and report it anyway, we feel compelled to set the record straight,” said Stankey. “There is no truth whatsoever to the Financial Times’ story saying At&T is or has considered selling HBO Europe. It’s completely baseless and inaccurate. HBO Europe is a valuable asset for our growth plans in Europe.”

Hattie Morahan, star of Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast and Arrow star David Nykl are to front The Sleepers, a spy drama for HBO Europe.
The pair are joining Tatiana Pauhofová (Burning Bush) in the six-part drama, which was previously known as Oblivious. The series, which is set in 1980s Prague, has started production in the Czech capital with additional filming in London.
It was written by newcomer Ondřej Gabriel, who studied political science at Prague’s Charles University before becoming a playwright, and directed by Ivan Zacharias, the Czech filmmaker behind HBO Europe’s Wasteland.
Pauhofová plays Marie, who fled Communist Czechoslovakia with her political dissident husband Viktor.
“Arrow” actor David Nykl will star in “The Sleepers,” HBO Europe’s Czech spy drama, which has just gone into production. Nykl, who plays Anatoly Knyazev in The CW superhero series, will be joined by Hattie Morahan (“Beauty and the Beast”) in the HBO show.
Tatiana Pauhofová, who was in HBO Europe’s Agnieszka Holland series “Burning Bush,” was already announced as a cast member of “The Sleepers,” which was previously known as “Oblivious.”
Shooting is underway in Prague, and additional filming will take place in London. The series is ostensibly set in late-1980s Prague against a backdrop of political unrest. There’s something interesting about seeing the cinema of your youth get redone. Maybe it’s just doubly weird for me today, considering it’s my birthday (Happy Birthday to me as I turn the dreaded age of 30). For the past few years, Disney has made essentially a cottage industry out of redoing some of their classic back catalogue. In many cases, it has been live action versions of a beloved animated flick. This week, they have a new film of that ilk hitting theaters in Beauty and the Beast. It’s a bold move, especially considering that animated movie is an undisputed all timer and the first cartoon ever nominated for Best Picture, still one of only three to this day, with its nomination being the only one while in a field of just five. That does put some pressure on this one to live up to its namesake.

In 1947, the world famous sleuth has retired to a remote Sussex farmhouse, living in relative anonymity with only his housekeeper Mrs Munro and her young son Roger for company. Cantankerous, demanding and frustrated with the mis-representation of him in Watson’s best-selling novels, he diverts his attention to an unsolved case. As the mystery deepens, Sherlock tries desperately to recall the events of 30 years ago that ultimately led to his retirement.
I had high hopes for Mr. Holmes. After all, not only does the film star Ian McKellan in the central role but Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s character is, typically, guaranteed to provide some intriguing crime-solving action. Not so here.

It looks lovely and Ian McKellen is amazing, of course, but it’s not very Holmesian. I suspect Holmes himself would snort in derision at its sentimentality. I’m “biast” (pro): big fan of Sherlock Holmes and Ian McKellen
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

I love Sherlock Holmes in all his many incarnations, and when I heard that director Bill Condon was making a movie about an elderly Holmes played by Ian McKellan, I cheered. The two had previously collaborated on the wonderful Gods and Monsters — about the classic Frankenstein filmmaker James Whale in his later years — so this new film was bound to be great, wasn’t it? I was a tad sorry to learn that Mr. Holmes, though based on a novel, was not based on the fabulous Mary Russell...

Chicago – Sherlock Holmes is the most famous fictional detective in literary history, and his character adaptation into movies, TV and other media shows no sign of slowing down. But what if Holmes were real, and lived as an old man past World War II? This scenario is explored in “Mr. Holmes.”
Rating: 4.0/5.0
This story is adapted from a novel by Mitch Cullin (“A Slight Trick of the Mind”), one of the many writers over the years that have extended the Holmes legacy of the detective’s creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock Holmes’ power of deduction, reasoning and extensive knowledge has fascinated several generations of readers, movie goers and Benedict Cumberbatch fans (he plays Holmes on the popular BBC-tv modern adaptation). “Mr. Holmes” has all of the joy and mystery of the character, portrayed as a 93-year-old by Sir Ian McKellen. The film ponders end-of-lifetime issues, including morality, self-worth and even loneliness for the detective,...

Mr. Holmes
Written for the screen by Jeffrey Hatcher
Directed by Bill Condon
UK, 2015
Sherlock Holmes is a character so ingrained in our cultural imagination that it’s hard to think up any new spin on him. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle invented a character who became an archetype, even for procedural television, as the airwaves are still littered with brilliant assholes who owe their very existence to the original detective of 221B Baker Street.
Mr. Holmes, the latest depiction of Holmes, directed by Bill Condon and based on Mitch Cullin’s novel A Slight Trick of the Mind, manages to find new ground by emphasizing the character’s vulnerability and, thus, his humanity. Ian McKellen plays an aged Holmes past his mental prime, struggling against encroaching senility to remember the conclusion to his final mystery. The enigmatic case unfolds only as quickly as Holmes can remember it, which is to say,...

Lets add another entry to the long, long list of feature films concerning the fictional character that’s been in more movies than any other (perhaps this new one will put him past Dracula, or at least in a tie with the Count). Just who is it? To evoke the old cliché, it’s elementary, film fans, for it’s none other than “the world’s greatest detective”, Sherlock Holmes. Most recently director Guy Ritchie cast Robert Downey, Jr. in two big screen blockbusters set at the start of the 20th century (while Sherlock jumped to the modern-day for TV shows on CBS and the BBC). This new film is also set in the 20th century, but our sleuth is not the bare-chested, bare-knuckle brawler from the Ritchie flicks. No, this is set in the middle of said century, with our hero well, well past normal retirement age. Sir Ian McKellen,...

Alex Kingston’s River Song will join Paul McGann’s 8th Doctor for a new audio adventure with Big Finish. Also, Churchill is back...
Exciting news here – the rumoured return for River Song to Doctor Who has been confirmed, but not in the way you might expect. Alex Kingston’s character won’t be teaming up with Peter Capaldi on TV, but instead joining Paul McGann in the audio world of Big Finish.
River will join the eighth Doctor, as well as his companions Liv (Nicola Walker) and Helen (Hattie Morahan) for Doctor Who: Doom Coalition 2. Seeing as this Doctor hasn’t met River yet (David Tennant’s version, in Silence In The Library, was the first to meet her), River will have to help him without revealing too much about herself.
“The idea of River meeting previous Doctors was actually proposed by Steven Moffat,” producer David Richardson said.

Opening in Us theatres on July 17, here’s a look at the new trailer for Mr. Holmes.
In his Berlinale 2015 review, Alex Billington (First Showing.net) writes Ian McKellen, “is absolutely magnificent in this film, taking on the role with complete authority and differentiating himself (from anything he has done before) with minor quirks and physical mannerisms. He does give us a Sherlock Holmes that we have never seen before, both likable and unlikable, but still traditional and nevertheless wise. Through his charm, and the impressively conceived narrative built around emotion, this film left a strong impression on me that will likely last for a long time.”
McKellen leads a stellar cast including Laura Linney, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hattie Morahan, Patrick Kennedy, Roger Allam, Frances de la Tour, Phil Davis and newcomer Milo Parker in Bill Condon’s Mr Holmes. The film reunites McKellen with director Bill Condon after their collaboration...

Throughout the course of his long and illustrious career, Ian McKellen has played a great many iconic characters across film and theater, most notable of which are Magneto in the X-Men series and Gandalf for Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit franchise. Now, thanks to Bill Condon’s atypical take on Arthur Conan Doyle’s super sleuth, the English actor is primed to play Sherlock Holmes in the upcoming Mr. Holmes.
The film centres around the ageing detective who, at the ripe old age of 93, struggles to enjoy the remainder of his retirement. Without his former partner-in-crime John Watson by his side, McKellen’s protagonist will have to call upon his world-famous wit and will to crack an unsolved case. Laura Linney, Milo Parker, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Hattie Morahan round out the cast, and it’s understood that Condon’s feature will lift inspiration from Mitch Cullins’ 2005 novel,...

"If I ever write a story myself it will be to correct millions of misconceptions created by his imaginative license." Roadside Attractions has unveiled the full-length Us trailer for Mr. Holmes, starring Ian McKellen as Sherlock Holmes at the end of his years. This is already one of my favorite films of the year and my stamp of approval on this one actually appears in the trailer – I'm quoted! It comes from my glowing review of the film from Berlinale, where I first saw this and loved it. McKellen is indeed magnificent in this story about memory loss and aging, featuring a stellar cast that includes the young Milo Parker, Laura Linney, Hattie Morahan, Hiroyuki Sanada and Frances de la Tour. Don't miss this in the summer! Here's the official full Us trailer for Bill Condon's Mr. Holmes, direct from Roadside: You can also watch the other recent UK...
