Her mother died when she was young, and Moore, who'd been raised mostly in Hawaii, returned to Philadelphia at age 17 to live with her grandmother. Soon after, working at an ad agency in New York City, she was dressed as a pseudo-mermaid to appear at a trade show as "Miss Aluminum," a title later re-purposed as that of her 2020 memoir.
