You haven't seen the "Pitch Perfect" movies? A-ca-scuse me? That's a reference you'll get when you finally sit down to watch the 2012 comedy set in the world of competitive college a cappella. For the uninitiated, that means making music without the assistance of instruments. It all comes from their mouths!
Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick ("Up in the Air") stars in "Pitch Perfect" as Beca Mitchell, an aspiring DJ who has reluctantly enrolled at Barden University, where her father works as a professor and desperately pushes her to venture out of her comfort zone and actually have what he considers a meaningful college experience. If she still hates it, then he'll let her go to California to follow her DJ dreams.
While at Barden, Beca ends up being recruited by the Barden Bellas, the university's all-female a cappella group led by Aubrey Posen (Anna Camp) and Chloe Beale (Brittany Snow), which...

Hopefully, those May flowers will start blooming soon after the many April (and previous months’) showers. But whatever the weather, Netflix has a solid selection of new movies to watch this month.
Netflix’s May lineup has several bright and joyful animated films as well as more serious stories with light at the end of the tunnel. Tom Hanks’ latest theatrical release “A Man Called Otto” arrives on the streaming service, adapted from Frederick Backman’s book “A Man Called Ove” and following the story of a grumpy old man who struggles to find purpose in life after the death of his wife.
Animated adventures for the whole family include “The Croods” and “The Tale of Desperaux” which teach lessons of bravery in their own ways. For those in the mood for slightly quirkier stories, Jason Moore’s “Pitch Perfect” and “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” should do the trick.

“The Mother” is like a lot of Netflix action-dramas of late: A mix of different genres with hints of a darker, possibly richer story, that ended up being excised due to budget and/or time constraints.
There is a lot of well-worn inspiration to be found in its familiar plot, from the survivalist parent/daughter relationship found in the 2011 feature “Hanna” to another Jennifer Lopez feature, 2018’s “Second Act” in which Lopez’s character is also at odds with a daughter she gave up at birth named Zoe.
All of this is to say a film like “The Mother” shouldn’t work, and it doesn’t completely gel 100 percent. But in the hands of Jennifer Lopez and director Niki Caro, the film as a whole mostly comes together as an action-packed (at times), contemplative (at times) and entertaining story of maternal self-sacrifice.
The audience meets Jennifer Lopez as an unnamed...

If you’re coming for an assassin’s daughter, you better be ready for that assassin to come for you. Of course, that’s kind of the bad guy’s whole intention in the first trailer for the new Netflix film “The Mother.”
That assassin is played by none other than Jennifer Lopez, and apparently, she’s ruffled more than a few feathers. As the footage opens on her in a hospital bed, she’s told that, after getting several FBI agents killed, the only thing she can do to keep her daughter safe is to leave her behind.
And so, reluctantly, she does. But, as is almost always the case with dangerous assassins, her past catches up to her — and her daughter. When the girl gets kidnapped as part of an effort to lure Lopez’s character back in, she offers an ominous warning.

Riverdale premiered back in 2017. As the CW series’ fans know well, the show has plenty of mystery and drama. Lili Reinhart, Camila Mendes, and Madelaine Petsch are some of Riverdale‘s talented cast members credited with making the series such a hit. However, some might be surprised to learn that a Riverdale movie was almost made before the TV show.
Even more surprising, instead of K.J. Apa playing the part of Archie, a disgraced comedian was set to take on the role for the big screen.
Before ‘Riverdale’ was a CW television series, it almost became a movie

Hollywood contracts can be a blessing and a curse. Some people wait for their entire careers to sign their names on the dotted line, while others must compromise their health and safety to land the gig. When Rebel Wilson signed her Pitch Perfect contract, she agreed to terms that went against her best interests and jeopardized her health. It’s easy to say she signed the papers, but when your big break is one signature away, who among us would have the fortitude to resist?
On a new episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, Wilson says her Pitch Perfect contract prevented her from losing weight. Wilson played Patricia “Fat Amy” Hobart in the Pitch Perfect trilogy, a role that cast her as the “fat friend” of the singing ensemble.

Rebel Wilson is reflecting on her role in the Pitch Perfect movies as it pertains to her health.
The actress was a guest on the latest episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, where she discussed her weight loss journey that she began in early 2020. When asked whether she felt limited in her role options following her performance in director Jason Moore’s hit 2012 film Pitch Perfect, Wilson said that her contract for the Universal film franchise stipulated that she not dramatically change her weight while playing Fat Amy.
“I did wait until Pitch Perfect seemed like it was over,” Wilson said of her weight-loss regimen. “I couldn’t lose a massive amount of weight because it was in the contracts for that movie. You can’t lose — I think it’s not more than 10 pounds or gain more than 10 pounds. You have to kind of stay at the weight.

Darcy and Tom gather their families for a destination wedding, but the ceremony gets put on hold when gunmen take everyone hostage. Now, they must do everything they can to save their loved ones — if they don’t wind up killing each other first.
Despite the month of January being exceptionally good to us film fans so far, it appears we have finally found a movie that’s rather terrible in the form of Shotgun Wedding, directed by Jason Moore, whose previous film Sisters wasn’t too impressive, either, sadly.
It’s a shame because Moore’s directorial debut was Pitch Perfect, which is one of my all-time favourite comfort films that ended up spawning an entire franchise. Seriously, where did all of Moore’s talent go? Shotgun Wedding is now...

There’s a moment in “Shotgun Wedding” where Jennifer Coolidge does what she does best — making a scene feel spontaneous when it’s intentional.
Coolidge plays Carol, mother of groom Tom Fowler (Josh Duhamel) who is getting married to Darcy (Jennifer Lopez) at a fancy destination wedding in the Philippines. Pirates disrupt the painfully planned ceremony, taking the wedding guests hostage to blackmail the father of the bride (Cheech Marin) into giving them a large sum of money. While the couple’s friends and family are corraled in the pool, Tom buys time by suggesting they get married right then and there.
As the hostages line up to create a wedding aisle in the pool, Carol starts belting out the opening lines of Edwin McCain’s “I’ll Be.” Director Jason Moore tells TheWrap why he picked the wedding staple.

As a performer, Jennifer Lopez is used to a lot of costume changes. In her new rom-com “Shotgun Wedding,” costumers had a whopping 28 versions of her wedding dress. Lopez approved Mitchell Travers’s very first sketch of the gown, which gets bruised and battered as much as her character Darcy does.
By the film’s end, the dress is definitely in no condition to be passed down.
Darcy Rivera (Jennifer Lopez) and Tom Fowler (Josh Duhamel) are putting the final touches on their destination wedding when several challenges further complicate their big day. Pirates raid the resort where they are staying and take all of their guests — family and friends who don’t always see eye to eye — hostage while the star couple tries to figure out how to get out of the life-threatening situation. Moore feels that the cast’s performances anchored the story’s heightened premise.

[Spoilers for “Shotgun Wedding,” now streaming on Prime Video, below.]
Well, who else didn’t see that twist ending coming? With the explosive climax of “Shotgun Wedding,” it seems like D’Arcy Carden just cemented herself as a stunt work pro and bonafide action star.
The Prime Video film stars Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel as a couple whose wedding party is held hostage by Balinese pirates. Turns out, it was J.Lo’s ex (played by Lenny Kravitz) who hired the criminals to ruin her big day and get a massive payout. Carden plays J.Lo’s dad’s (Cheech Marin) girlfriend who is two-timing him with Kravitz and part of the fraud scheme.
“It’s been really fun to be able to tell friends and family I’m playing Cheech’s girlfriend but I’m having an affair with Lenny Kravitz. They’re like, ‘What?!'” Carden exclusively told IndieWire. “Oh,...

Jennifer Lopez’s and Josh Duhamel’s new rom-com “Shotgun Wedding” is centered around their destination wedding, but there’s trouble in paradise. As you can imagine by the title, the big day quickly turns into a far more action- and gun-packed situation than anyone planned.

Shotgun Wedding is a 2023 Prime Video comedy movie directed by Jason Moore starring Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel. The script is written by Mark Hammer.
Jennifer Lopez is the main atraction of this “other type” of romantic comedy that knows how to become more than just a comedy than a repetitive structure of planned scenes.
Leaving the tried and true… within its pretensions, of course.
Movie Review Shotgun Wedding (2023)
This is a comedy we were missing because of its classic spirit and above all, because it knows how to be the comedy it needs to be (we are talking about Hollywood’s golden years) and not fall into melodrama. Shotgun Wedding is more of an “action comedy” than a romantic one and although it is pretty “silly” (I don´t think anyone will deny this), it knows how to be acid when it has to be, and especially avoid some clichés,...

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
If anyone was holding out hope that Alejandro González Iñárritu would change his mind about directing a superhero movie, I don’t have good news for ya.

If anyone was holding out hope that Alejandro González Iñárritu would change his mind about directing a superhero movie, I don’t have good news for ya.

The new film "Shotgun Wedding" highlights the danger of having a reasonably interesting concept without similar follow-through. When the trailer was released a couple of months back, there were a number of folks on Twitter who seemed delightedly mystified at how a seemingly innocuous romantic comedy about a bride and groom getting set for their wedding in the Philippines turned into an action movie when said wedding is beset upon by vicious pirates. And the setup is indeed kind of a welcome and dark twist on the friendly, low-key, and low-stakes comedies that star Jennifer Lopez has made throughout her career. But the execution of the setup is desperately wanting, in part because the film and too many (though not all) of its players don't have the right comic notes or even know which ones to hit.
Considering some other recent big-screen romantic comedies, it's hard not to watch "Shotgun Wedding...

Jennifer Coolidge's Tanya McQuoid is the most fascinating character on HBO's "The White Lotus." She's presented as an insecure, high-powered entrepreneur (with an impeccable fashion sense) who has made a fortune thanks to her inheritance and a life out of transactional relationships. She knows what she wants, she's never embarrassed to ask for it, she's self-aware in less than advisable ways, and she adores massages. To put it simply: she's awesome.
Tanya also loves being loved and wanted — although her husband Greg doesn't deliver on that front. Now, Coolidge's character has a pretty tragic fate at the end of season 2, but that doesn't mean it has to be the end for her character. Personally, I want to see creator Mike White bring her back as Tanya's long-lost twin sister or something. Though this idea might not be ideal ... the Emmy-winning actress has a better one in mind: give Tanya an origin prequel series.

Shakespeare could never have delivered a poem as elegant and moving as Jennifer Coolidge reciting Jennifer Lopez’s “Jenny from the Block” as spoken word in her TikTok debut.
“This is my first TikTok, and I’m trying to think of something cool to do, and I think I’m just gonna do a poem that I like,” Coolidge said in the 41-second clip. In full glam, the actress delivered the lyrics as if they were part of an intense monologue: “Don’t be fooled by the rocks that I got/I’m still Jenny,...

Why Jennifer Coolidge Is Hesitant to Ask ‘White Lotus’ Creator Mike White for a Tanya Prequel Series
Jennifer Coolidge would love to play Tanya McQuoid again.
As fans of “The White Lotus” know, Tanya was killed off in Season 2 of Mike White’s award-winning series. However, Coolidge says she needs others to get White on board to bring her back in some way.
“For me, I think it looks like I’m a whiner or something,” Coolidge told me Wednesday at the premiere of her new action rom-com “Shotgun Wedding.”
I suggested that Tanya get her own origin story prequel series. “If you can get that going,” Coolidge said. “You’re going to run into [White], I know you are. Tell him.”
She wasn’t too happy when she learned about Tanya’s demise. “I said, ‘Do I really have to be killed?’” Coolidge recalled. “And [White] said, ‘Yes, it’s over, Jennifer.’”
Coolidge gladly reported that her gay fans have been approaching and singing the dance remix of her now iconic line,...

Jennifer Lopez, one of the unofficial queens of the rom-com, is back with her latest addition to the genre, this time with a healthy dose of action mixed in.
Lopez and Josh Duhamel star in Shotgun Wedding, which follows the two as they gather their families for a destination wedding. But the ceremony gets put on hold when gunmen take everyone hostage. The couple must then set out to save their loved ones, which features a starry supporting cast including Jennifer Coolidge, Lenny Kravitz, D’Arcy Carden and Cheech Marin.

Jennifer Lopez has been married a few times, both in life and in the movies — most recently twice last year with her real life wedding(s) to Ben Affleck, and on screen in her delightful Valentine’s Day-timed comedy Marry Me. Both made me happy for her, but her latest, Shotgun Wedding, is something altogether different, a frenetic action comedy that never puts on the brakes. It is a wild ride no doubt, but it isn’t the kind of wedding to which I need to be invited any time soon.

Nobody knows the secret ingredients of a good marriage better than Jennifer Lopez. In 2022, Bennifer tied the knot! The triple threat dared to say the past 12 months were the “best year” for her! She is the only person who can save us, and certainly one of the only performers capable of spunkily wielding a shotgun in a wedding frock (without causing too much offense to fourth-wave feminism) for the otherwise frustratingly average “Shotgun Wedding”.
If we can spend a minute on the journey of her onscreen husband, the casting process went from Ryan Reynolds (undoubtedly funny) to Armie Hammer (undoubtedly abhorrent) to, just two weeks after Hammer dropped out in January 2021 after being accused of sexual abuse, Josh Duhamel: a poor guy just trying to get another job who suddenly had to fly out to the Dominican Republic with less than a month’s notice. He did his best.

“Not everything is about money!” exclaims bride-to-be Darcy at the rehearsal dinner for her idyllic-looking island wedding in the Philippines — a rebuke to her multi-millionaire father Robert, who wishes she’d let him pay to make the whole affair even more luxe. Perhaps she means it. Darcy claims she wanted to elope to avoid the whole foofaraw, while her “groomzilla” Tom, in a pleasing reversal of gender stereotypes, obsesses over table settings. When their elegant nuptials are crashed by a gang of ransom-seeking pirates, her instincts are proven correct — though as played by a typically immaculate Jennifer Lopez, she doesn’t seem like someone who craves the simple life. “Shotgun Wedding” may begin by separating rich from rich, though as the body count mounts in this oddly unpalatable romantic comedy, such distinctions fall away: In the face of impoverished, gun-toting Asian criminals, well-off Americans must mostly prevail.

Jennifer Lopez has long been on record as a lifelong romantic, and in the last year — with weddings both on and offscreen — she’s proven it. But sometimes, it’s ok to say “I don’t.”
“Shotgun Wedding” was proposed so long ago that Lopez has been matched with three different partners: Her first costar was Ryan Reynolds, who dropped out and now remains solely as an executive producer. He was replaced by Armie Hammer, whose personal controversies soon sent him in an entirely different direction. Somehow Josh Duhamel caught the bouquet, leaving him with the thankless role of Tom, a “groomzilla” who pays more attention to his pineapple centerpieces than to his fed-up fiancée, Darcy (Lopez).
There is no need for any screenwriter to rehash lazy wedzilla tropes ever again, regardless of gender. But Tom’s stress is at least a little understandable, with two demanding families sharing space...

Should you ever find yourself needing to kill time on a long journey — say, to a friend’s ill-advised nuptials in some distant tropical locale — you could probably do worse than Shotgun Wedding. It is, in a lot of ways, the quintessential plane movie: not bad enough to be offensive, neither good enough to demand your full attention nor complicated enough to require it, and better than having nothing to watch at all.
Here on the ground, though, where the options for theatrical and streaming content are nigh infinite, it’s a much harder sell. Directed by Jason Moore (Pitch Perfect), Shotgun Wedding amounts to an action romantic comedy in which the action is uninspired, the romance tepid and the comedy flat — such that not even rom-com queen Jennifer Lopez can elevate it above aggressive mediocrity.

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have already proven that their second shot at romance has worked.
The two married in July, about 20 years after they first set the world on fire as Bennifer from 2002 to 2004.
Now, Lopez says she and her hubby may reunite on the big screen. They infamously co-starred in 2003’s “Gigli,” which bombed both with critics and at the box office.
“Maybe, maybe! Absolutely,” Lopez said when I asked her Wednesday night at the premiere of her new action rom-com “Shotgun Wedding” if she and Affleck had plans to work together again. “We talk. We love being together and working together so, yeah, you never know.”

Looking for a romantic comedy with pirates, grenades, and pineapple-themed centerpieces? If so, then "Shotgun Wedding," starring Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel, will be right up your alley. The film starts with a destination wedding in the Philippines full of the usual pre-martial shenanigans, but takes a turn when pirates show up looking to hold people for ransom.
The film is clearly a mashup, something that attracted director Jason Moore ("Pitch Perfect") to the project. "Finding that balance and finding that tone felt like a fun challenge," he told me in an interview leading up to the movie's premiere on Prime Video.
Moore's fun challenge had him strapped into zipline towers and figuring out elaborate action sequences, two things you don't typically find in rom-com fare. I talked with him about those challenges, working with actors like Jennifer Coolidge and Cheech Marin, and how his Broadway experience prepared him for making this movie.

Prime Video’s romantic comedy Shotgun Wedding features two actors very familiar with the genre, although this rom-com appears to be much more action-oriented than lovey-dovey. Do people still say lovey-dovey? Anyhow, the latest trailer shows the chaos that erupts after Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel’s wedding is interrupted by armed intruders.
The cast also includes Jennifer Coolidge (who just won a Golden Globe for her performance in The White Lotus), Sonia Braga, Cheech Marin, Selena Tan, and D’Arcy Carden. Callie Hernandez, Desmin Borges, Steve Coulter, Alberto Isaac, and Lenny Kravitz also join Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel for some rom-com action-thriller fun.
Jason Moore directed from a screenplay by Mark Hammer. Lopez, Todd Lieberman, David Hoberman, Alexander Young, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, and Benny Medina produced.

At the risk of hyperbole, I'm tempted to proclaim to all the masses that we're living in a golden age of trailers that tease one (relatively) normal movie premise and then take a complete 90-degree swerve into something else entirely. We just saw that unfold in real-time with the hilariously-named "Plane," the latest Gerard Butler actioner that unleashed one of the most entertaining title reveals we've received in quite some time. Oh, and should you be tempted to think that this trend is only able to be enjoyed ironically, take it from /Film's Ryan Scott that "Plane" does, in fact, deliver the goods.
