No discussion of Baz Luhrmann’s films – and his maximalist, hyper-sensory style – is complete without mentioning their equally more-is-more approach to music. With the help of his longtime music supervisor Anton Monsted (who started out as his assistant on 1996’s “Romeo + Juliet”), the Australian director has become synonymous with era-defying, genre-compounding pop soundtracks that infuse his films’ historical settings with contemporary sensibilities.
That trademark first emerged in the 90’s-grunge soundtrack of “Romeo + Juliet” and eventually evolved into the mash-up mania of this year’s “Elvis.” Like “The Great Gatsby” and “Moulin Rouge!” before it, the box office hit blends the King’s classic tunes with reimagined and original songs by some of today’s biggest artists.
In honor of Luhrmann’s latest, TheWrap presents a ranking of his films by soundtrack. (Note: “Australia” and “Strictly Ballroom” do not have long enough soundtracks to merit inclusion.)

As a movie, “Promising Young Woman,” the debut feature from “Killing Eve” writer/director Emerald Fennell out April 17 via Focus Features, defies easy categorization. Anchored by a star turn from Carey Mulligan, the film blends equal parts thriller and pitch-black comedy with occasional dashes of traditional rom-com and ‘90s noir drama structures. It’s all told through the unique, stylized lens of Fennell, who navigates the viewer through a unique take on post-#MeToo society.
The film’s eclectic mix of genres with a strong female perspective will also be at the forefront of its official soundtrack, due April 3 via Capitol Records. The album will feature eight all-new songs created for the film, including four covers and four original songs. Two of the album’s originals are written and performed by Cyn, whose first single and video from the project, “Drinks,” was released Friday (March 6.) Netflix’s surprise 2018 Ya rom-com hit “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” spawned a lot of hard-to-duplicate success metrics: star Noah Centineo gained over 12 million Instagram followers in the two months following the film’s premiere, Japanese probiotic milk Yokult saw a surge in sales from its brief product cameo and Norwegian singer-songwriter Anna of the North scored a viral hit and her first-ever U.S. tour after her steamy, synthy song “Lovers” was featured in a fan-favorite hot tub scene between lead characters Lara Jean (Lana Condor) and Peter Kavisnky (Centineo.)

Baz Luhrmann has spoken about the second soundtrack to his latest movie The Great Gatsby.
Yellow Cocktail Music: The Great Gatsby Jazz Recordings is to be released on CD and vinyl next month, while it is already available on iTunes.
Bryan Ferry's orchestra group have recorded jazz versions of tracks from the original release, alongside classics by Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton and Irving Aaronson.

The new collection includes Ferry recording jazz versions of his band Roxy Music's 'Love Is The Drug' and Amy Winehouse's 'Back To Black', which was covered by Beyoncé and Andre 3000 on the first LP.

Baz Luhrmann was ready to take the blame if "The Great Gatsby" flopped.
Now that it's a hit, he has every right to take the credit.
Luhrmann and his wife, Catherine Martin, spent three years "living and breathing" F. Scott Fitzgerald's life and works in preparation for this film. "We are total and utter research nuts," Luhrmann told The Huffington Post on Friday. "We could research forever and never make the movie."
Case in point: Luhrmann read that Fitzgerald and his wife, Zelda, had glimpsed the Statue of Liberty one morning from an ocean liner arriving in New York Harbor. "So we went to England and we came on an ocean liner to New York," he said.
Luhrmann's monumental research effort informed every aspect of the film -- and it helps explain why a collection of prominent Fitzgerald scholars and insiders have embraced the adaptation, even as some critics cry,...

“I want to write something new, something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately patterned.”
—F. Scott Fitzgerald
From the uniquely imaginative mind of writer/producer/director Baz Luhrmann comes the new big screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby. In his adaptation, the filmmaker combines his distinctive visual, sonic, and storytelling styles in 3 Dimensions, weaving a Jazz Age cocktail faithful to Fitzgerald’s text and relevant to now. Leonardo DiCaprio stars in the title role.
In theaters on May 10th, “The Great Gatsby” follows would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz, bootleg kings, and sky-rocketing stocks. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan.

If you listen to the show, you know that I’m nervous about Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming effort, The Great Gatsby. I’m unconvinced that Leo can pull of Gatsby, if I’m being honest, but more importantly, Luhrmann’s bent toward dropping stories into the same formula doesn’t seem in line with the story.
At any rate, it seems like some things are being managed well enough, if we just look at the images. I’ll give them Carey Mulligan though, she could be a good fit.
Will you be in line for this one on opening day?

At the very least, the soundtrack for Baz Luhrmann.s The Great Gatsby is going to sizzle. We clarified earlier that artist and mogul Jay-z would serve as executive producer for Luhrmann.s soundtrack, which also would feature score compositions from Craig Thompson and Anton Monsted. It makes sense, then, that Jay-z.s wife Beyonce would contribute a track for the soundtrack, which will accompany the film in May. E! Online reports that Beyonce and Outkast's Andre 3000 will collaborate on a cover of Amy Winehouse.s jaunty, lounge-club single "Back to Black," delivering what a source for Interscope Records calls a .very different take. on the late singer.s song. The Gatsby soundtrack is shaping up to be a star-studded affair. Early reports claim that Lady Gaga and Prince were contributing tracks for the album. Adding Beyonce and Andre 3000 ups the album.s already substantial street cred. Considering the fact...

On the heels of the announcement that director Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby will open the Cannes Film Festival on May 15th, comes official word that Grammy Award-winning musical artist Shawn “Jay Z” Carter has collaborated on the film and is serving as Executive Producer to bring the modern “Jazz Age” energy of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s original text to the big screen, procuring, performing, producing and arranging for a soundtrack featuring some of the world’s top musical artists.
Jay Z’s contributions, woven amongst a score by long-time Luhrmann collaborator, composer Craig Armstrong, drive Gatsby’s champagne-infused dance floors, rumble in New York’s illegal speakeasies, and foreshadow the tragedy behind Gatsby’s “extraordinary gift for hope.” To articulate the film’s “1920s-Meets-Now” sound, Jay Z also comes to “The Great Gatsby” soundtrack as a performer and contributor of original music.
