Julia Reichert was at home — she lived in a commune of young political activists in Dayton, Ohio — on Feb. 21, 1978, when a local television reporter knocked on her door and asked her about the Oscar nomination her documentary “Union Maids” had just received.
“We didn’t even know we were in the running,” recalls Reichert. The film, about three women union organizers in Chicago during the Depression, was co-directed by Jim Klein and Miles Mogulescu.
“We were bowled over and like, ‘Holy s–t. At that point, we were very young leftists, so Hollywood was not something we admired,” she says.
Reichert attended the Oscar ceremony but didn’t go home a winner. She didn’t even consider herself a filmmaker because making movies, to her, was not so much a cinematic endeavor as an extension of her political activism. However, the Academy recognition fueled Reichert’s untapped awareness that, indeed,...

Following Sony Pictures Worldwide' international rights buy of this year's Sundance opener "Whiplash," Sony Pictures Classics netted domestic rights to Damien Chazelle's well-received film. The deal was reported to have been made for around $3 million. The film, starring Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons, was adapted from Chazelle's short film that won Sundance's jury award for fiction last year. The deal was negotiated with Wme Global along with Miles Mogulescu of Bold Films' Business Affairs. Sony Classics released the following statement: What a way to begin Sundance! It's not just a good movie, it's a full, rich experience, a feast for our eyes, ears, and mind. What remains obvious is this film marks the birth of a major world class filmmaker and features staggering, emotional performances by J.K. Simmons and Miles Teller. We are so excited to be bringing this movie to the moviegoing public. Go here for Indiewire's glowing review.
