Frankie Boyle will play a recovering alcoholic in an upcoming short film.
Gasping - Boyle's debut film - mirrors the Mock the Week star's battle with alcoholism. Boyle stopped drinking at the age of 26, and is now teetotal.
Boyle stars alongside Still Game's Gavin Mitchell, who plays a fellow attendee of Alcoholics Anonymous, and Gianni Capaldi, who plays his best friend.
Capaldi told film website Action Elite: "[Frankie's character] gives up drinking in this flick and he loses his job because he had a drink problem, so I offer him a job to work at a distillery I owned.
"So all I'm doing is reminiscing about the days when we used to party and drink. We went to Japan and everywhere else in the world and I'm trying to get him back on the drink. I'm that obnoxious, annoying friend who is continuously trying."

Still Game is to return for a new stage show, it has been announced.
Ford Kiernan (Jack) and Greg Hemphill (Victor) have ended their six-year feud to reunite for a new project based around their BBC Scotland sitcom.
The pair will meet up with Paul Riley (Winston), Jane McCarry (Isa), Sanjeev Kohli (Navid) and Gavin Mitchell (Boabby) to discuss the new production this week, the Daily Record reports.
The comedy duo - who also co-wrote and starred in Chewin' the Fat - parted ways due to "creative differences" in 2008.
Speaking in January 2012, Hemphill said that filming the series hurt his friendship with Kiernan.
He said at the time: "It's kind of sad, really. It reflects the pressure we were under that we never really acknowledged. We rarely took holidays. Stuff like that, it all bubbled up.
"Maybe in five or ten years we'll come back."

Director: Ricky Wood. Writer: Rick Wood. Cast: Elizabeth Brown, Lisa Cameron, Lindsay Cromar, Shian Denovan, Samuel Feeney and David Hayman. Sawney: Flesh of Man was shot as an indie production in the United Kingdom. This film takes some of its mythology from a 15th Century legend, Sawney Bean. This cannibal, allegedly, stalked and killed over a thousand travellers in the Highlands of Scotland, with his ravenous family. Eventually, the family members were captured and executed. But, Rick Wood's script brings Sawney back from the dead, to haunt young lads and lasses. This film is excellently shot by Ricky Wood and the diverse characters add to the already moody scenery. The story is fairly straight forward. A detective is trying to catch a serial killer, who is chopping up local women. The bodies are only partially discovered (the rest has been eaten). Det. Munro (Gavin Mitchell) enlists the aid of a local journo',...

Ah FrightFest how I love thee. Yes, my annual excursion to Scotland for Glasgow FrightFest continues this year, and I couldn’t be happier! This years line-up is strong, Very strong, with plenty of variety and some great film picks by Alan, Ian, Paul and Greg. Plus the appearance of Norwegian drama Hellsfjord! Of all the films showing this year there’s one that I most excited to see – Detention of the Dead… I’ve tried my hardest to cover the film as much as possible over the past year as it looks like my “cup of tea”, so for it to show at FrightFest is awesome (although to be fair I already knew that was in the line-up). However the real big surprise is the appearance of Neil Jordan’s Byzantium in the line-up – the Scottish crowd is notoriously “blood-thirtsy” so I hope Jordan’s film isn’t too sedate for the Glasgow crowd.

A notorious cannibal has made a recent appearance at the American Film Market. His name is Sawney Bean. He was supposedly a Scottish flesheater who found a taste for local travellers in the 15th Century. Now, he is making his devilish presence known as Sawney: Flesh of Man. And, Jinga Films has released a clip for this dark tale. In the clip for Sawney: Flesh of Man, Bean lures a local reporter to his cavernous home. Bean has taken Hamish's girlfriend hostage. As Bean's appetite grows, Hamish begins to run out of time to save her. Have a look at the reel inside with this film likely to find horror audiences in 2013. Director/writer: Ricky Wood. Cast: Elizabeth Brown, Lisa Cameron, Lindsay Cromar, Shian Denovan, Samuel Feeney, David Hayman, William Houston, Rachel Jackson, Jean-Paul Jesstiece, Ross Maxwell, and Gavin Mitchell. For centuries, thousands have vanished without a trace… I will admit – this trailer is totally disgusting! So, my recommendation is – don’t eat your lunch while watching it! Sawney: Flesh Of Man is an upcoming horror movie which comes from director Ricky Wood and today we have the first trailer for the whole thing, so – I don’t know, maybe you should check it out, or whatever…
The movie stars David Hayman as a religious psychopathic killer named Sawney, who drives a devilish Black Cab, stalking the towns and cities, abducting unholy souls for his communion of sacrifices.
Sawney’s insane family of inbred killers Judd and Jake, use their agility to wreak slaughter and havoc among their victims, who are then dragged to Sawney’s lair in the hills, where they are raped, tortured and cannibalised. Sawney with his skillful surgical blade removes the appetizing pieces of human flesh...

Not many films are set at music festivals. D.A. Pennebaker’s documentary, “Monterey Pop” is vital, we’ll grant you, and other rock docs that expose something fundamental about the artists they’re profiling (“Don’t Look Back,” “Gimme Shelter”) remain compelling portraits of some of the most important artists of the twentieth-century. But, much like stand-up comedy or running for high office, fictional recreations of what compels a human being to get up onstage in front of thousands of people and expose themselves to the public at large, are far and few between.
With this in mind we turn to “You Instead,” which is director David Mackenzie’s seventh feature film, not that you’d known it from anything on display here. It has all the manufactured, forcible ‘fun’ of a T-Mobile flash-mob advert although it attempts to weave a spontaneous star-cross’d romance out of a happenstance meeting...

Everything about You Instead feels genuine apart from the characters and the plot. It is a romantic comedy filmed at 2010’s T in the Park Festival in Scotland, with real bands and real festival-goers buzzing around the periphery of the plot. This is a rather good idea for a movie, as it gives a rich and fascinating backdrop to the story. It’s made on what is obviously a very small budget; presumably it had to be shot fast and around the time schedule of the festival, meaning that they’d have to take, for a start, whatever weather they were hit with.
Unfortunately, the story writer Thomas Leveritt (a young, award-winning novelist) and director David Mackenzie (Young Adam, Hallam Foe) have saddled this ‘realist’ backdrop with about as dull and conventional a romantic-comedy plot as it’s possible to conceive. Given that the main artistic...

David Mackenzie’s rom-com, You Instead, was shot in just five days. Here’s Carley’s review of a film that doesn’t quite overcome its low-budget status…
We’ve just come to the end of another great British summer, filled with barbecues, long walks on the beach, and sun-drenched music festivals. No, scratch that – it was filled with rain, disappointment and muddy music festivals. But in spite of the horrible weather, the music festival has become a British obsession, with hundreds sprouting up over the summer. These range from big ones, such as Reading and V, to smaller ones, like the Ben & Jerry’s Sundae Festival (free ice cream – yum).
It was probably only a matter of time, then, before one of these became the setting for a romantic comedy, which is exactly what you get with director David Mackenzie’s You Instead, filmed on location at 2010’s T in the Park in Scotland.
