Jacques Tati, Coast to Coast

17 hours ago | The Auteurs | See recent The Auteurs news »

"The Museum of Modern Art's retrospective of the French screenwriter, director, and actor Jacques Tati (born Jacques Tatischeff, 1907–1982) features newly struck, gloriously restored 35mm prints of his six feature films," brags the Museum, and well they should: "Monsieur Hulot's Holiday, Playtime, Mon Oncle, his long-dreamed-of colorized version of Jour de fête, the revelatory Traffic, and the little-seen Parade - along with three short sketch films." The series runs through January 2 and Jordan Hruska (T Magazine) notes that, architecturally, "MoMA is a perfect venue" for it, while Nicolas Rapold (Voice) notes that it follows "the huge Cinémathèque Française exhibition" and: "Besides a 1936 René Clément short with gangly Tati as a farm boy recruited for sparring (sports-based routines were initially his specialty), MoMA also shows the delightful Cours du soir (1966), shot during Playtime downtime, in which Tati presides at a night school for pratfalls and mime. It's quite an education, but then, …

From Basterds to 'Beginners' for Melanie Laurent

12 December 2009 6:25 PM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

Think of her as this year's Marion Cotillard. Showcased in Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, French thesp Melanie Laurent might have made further strides in the English language film sector - landing a part in Mike Mills' Beginners (currently shooting in Los Angeles). - Think of her as this year's Marion Cotillard. Showcased in Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, French thesp Melanie Laurent might have made further strides in the English language film sector - landing a part in Mike Mills' Beginners (currently shooting in Los Angeles). Also on board, is Goran Visnjic (Helen) who I imagine will be playing Christopher Plummer's younger lover. I imagine that Laurent would play Ewan McGregor's significant other or perhaps a hospital worker? The storyline sees Ewan McGregor play a young man rocked by two announcements from his elderly father (Plummer)…one, that he has terminal cancer, and two, …

Tracking Shot November 2009: Beginners, Black Swan, Let Me In

12 December 2009 6:25 PM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

At the beginning of every month, Ioncinema.com's "Tracking Shot" features a handful of projects that we feel are worth signaling out and that are moments away from lensing. As we get closer to holiday dates productions tend to drop, so this November we are keeping tabs on only a handful of projects. - At the beginning of every month, Ioncinema.com's "Tracking Shot" features a handful of projects that we feel are worth signaling out and that are moments away from lensing. McGregor and Plummer take Mike Mills For 'Beginners'

12 December 2009 6:25 PM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

I'm squeezing all the juice out of this Production Weekly tweet. In 140 characters we now know that: the already mentioned Ewan McGregor will join the small, indie production and will be acting alongside vet thesp Christopher Plummer (The Last Station) in a project that will go by the title of Beginners. - I'm squeezing all the juice out of this Production Weekly tweet. Unlike Thumbsucker, I have a gut feeling that Mike MIlls will be working from an original screenplay. Filming is set to begin in L.A. next month, we can look forward to to this long awaited sophomore feature in 2010 - perhaps as early as Cannes? Sony Pictures Classics

Spike Jonze: Master of the Wild Things

7 December 2009 1:28 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Once the hippest name in music videos, the 40-year-old director will this week terrify children with his adaption of Maurice Sendak's adored tale

A large rubber-band ball sits on the bedside table of the wilful young Max, hero of the new Spike Jonze film, while overhead, on a shelf, sits a bird's nest. Early shots of these odd objects cleverly prelude the virtuoso visual style of this audacious adaptation of a children's classic: the 1963 picture book Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak.

In the hands of the Oscar-nominated Jonze the island of fearful monsters that Max discovers one night when he has been sent to bed without supper becomes a perilous wasteland dotted with spherical wickerwork huts, nest-like forts and rounded boulders. Although Max, along with his ugly, untamed group of new friends, is clearly recognisable from Sendak's book, any parent who returns to their nursery copy …

Goran Visnjic Is One Of Mike Mills' Beginners

9 November 2009 2:03 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

As reported by Variety, ER's Goran Visnjic will join Ewan McGregor, Mélanie Laurent and Christopher Plummer in Mike Mills' Beginners, described as an "indie drama" for Olympus Pictures and Parts and Labor. Seriously? Indie drama? That.s it? That.s never it with the power of Google at your fingertips. Apparently, someone over at Movieline has the script and posted a brief synopsis. .McGregor plays a young man rocked by two announcements from his elderly father (Plummer) . one, that he has terminal cancer, and two, that he.s coming out of the closet.. Good enough for me! Now that that.s out of the way, back to Visnjic. Who can argue with seeing the tall, dark and handsome Dr. Kovac on the big screen? Perhaps he.s even playing Plummer.s character.s oncologist. Playing a doctor on TV served him well, why not play one in a movie? …

Casting Notes: Ray Winstone in Red Snow; Goran Visnjic in Beginners; Gwyneth Paltrow in Let the Right One In Director’s Next

9 November 2009 7:30 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Here's a bit of casting news to start the day. Ray Winstone has jumped onto Red Snow, a "serial killer thriller" in which Winstone will be "an ex-sas officer tracking down his missing daughter in the snow forests of a remote town in north Canada." Script and direction are by Stuart St. Paul based on the true story of a killer that targeted Alaskan towns in the '80s. You don't know St. Paul's name, but you know his work; he's been a stunt guy for over 30 years with credits including Aliens, some of the Roger Moore Bond films and the recent Red Riding productions. [THR] After the break, news for Goran Visnjic and Gwyneth Paltrow. ER's Goran Visnjic has joined Beginners, an indie that has already attracted a significant cast: Ewan McGregor, Melanie Laurent (Shosanna from Inglourious Basterds) and Christopher Plummer are in this one. Directing is Mike Mills, …

Goran Visnjic Joins Beginners

8 November 2009 11:15 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

With the doors of ER’s County General Hospital now forever closed, poor old Goran Visnjic – who played dishy doc Dr. Luka Kovac – has had to find a new home. And it looks like he’s decided to give the big screen one last try by signing on to join Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer and Inglourious Basterds star, Melanie Laurent, in Beginners.Mike Mills – the director of Thumbsucker, not to be confused with  R.E.M.’s frizzy-haired bassist – is directing the indie movie, whose plot is being kept very firmly under wraps, from his own script. Filming has already begun in L.A.Visjnic, thus far, hasn’t exactly set the movie world alight. He’s had bad guy turns in the likes of Practical Magic and The Deep End, was the love interest in the risible Elektra, and impressed in Michael Winterbottom’s Welcome To Sarajevo. But, now …

Ewan's Next Gay Storyline

7 October 2009 3:20 PM, PDT | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

Our friends over at The Playlist noticed a recent announcement about a mysterious new film from director Mike Mills (Thumbsucker) called Beginners, set to star Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer. What's this project about, they wondered? Well, you know how we like to shed light on secret loglines at Movieline, and we do have the script, so here's the exclusive plot synopsis: McGregor plays a young man rocked by two announcements from his elderly father (Plummer)...one, that he has terminal cancer, and two, that he's coming out of the closet. The role of Plummer's handsome younger boyfriend has not yet been cast, but we're frankly shocked that the famously gay-friendly McGregor (soon to be seen canoodling with Jim Carrey in I Love You Phillip Morris) isn't playing that part instead. Big Directors Small Films: Mike Mills’ Architecture of Reassurance

7 October 2009 12:34 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

We haven't posted a Big Director Small Films column in quite some time. This has happened for a variety of reasons, but mainly due to the fact that we ran through most of the available short films of the big Hollywood directors. I'm hoping to bring the column back with more of a focus on younger filmmakers, some of which you might recognize, others of which you might not, but all of whom have, at very least, directed a feature film. So yeah, the "Big Directors" part of the column title is not completely accurate anymore, but lets move on... Mike Mills is a famous New York graphic artist who designed promotional material and album covers for such acts as Beastie Boys, Beck, Sonic Youth, and Ol' Dirty Bastard. He moved on to directing music videos for such artists as Moby, Yoko Ono and Air, and became a very successful …
