Exclusive: Blockchain-based streamer Vabble is building an advisory board of high-profile U.S. media execs.
The company has added former CBS Studios sales exec Barry Chamberlain, ex-IMAX distribution chief Philip Groves and eOne marketing head Joanna Miles to its advisory board. They join former Universal Pictures EVP John C. Hall, who joined the board recently.
Vabble, which is gearing up to launch its service, allows indie filmmakers to directly distribute their films globally using blockchain technology. Like several other blockchain streaming platforms, the company’s founders claim to have identified imbalances in the film distribution ecosystem and plan to provide a decentralized alternative to the Hollywood studios and other majors.
The company says its streaming service will incorporate elements of blockchain tech, on-demand streaming and social media experiences, and is billing it as “a hybrid Snapchat and Netflix combination.”

Katharine Hepburn’s film career endured an extraordinary six decades. A strong-willed feminist, she was a role model for generations of women and fashion icon who eschewed dresses for stylish wide-legged pants. She is still the only performer to receive four best actress Oscars. She stuck to her guns and never attended the Oscars when was nominated only showing up to give the Thalberg award to a producer with whom she worked with at MGM. Hepburn also made nine films with the great Spencer Tracy, though, their off-screen love affair may not have been exactly what it seemed.

A few years ago, director Oliver Harper made a documentary called In Search of the Last Action Heroes, which was described as “a comprehensive retrospective of the ’80s and ’90s action film genre.” One of the people interviewed for that documentary was screenwriter Steven E. de Souza, who was a major contributor to the action genre in those decades, working on the likes of 48 Hrs., Commando, The Running Man, Die Hard, Die Hard 2, Hudson Hawk, Ricochet, Beverly Hills Cop III, and Street Fighter, among others… with one of the others being the much-maligned Sylvester Stallone comic book movie Judge Dredd. In a moment that didn’t make it into the final cut of In Search of the Last Action Heroes, de Souza discussed the issues that Judge Dredd ran into, including bad marketing and a struggle to secure an R rating. Harper has been kind enough to share that deleted scene online,...

Known as the King of the Gimmicks, producer/director William Castle will surely be remembered for such B staples as House on Haunted Hill (1959), The Tingler (also ’59) and 13 Ghosts (1960), cheap but fun pictures with added pleasure for the moviegoer by the use of ingenious devices such as Emergo, Percepto, and Illusion-o. It’s only fitting that he ended his career as co-writer/producer of Jeannot Szwarc’s Bug (1975), a nature gone amok flick that becomes a Weird-o halfway through to detail a descent into madness.
Distributed by Paramount Pictures in June, Bug didn’t make much of a dent in the summer box office, bringing in a little over $3.6 million and infuriating critics. Richard Eder of The New York Times called it “sick, and literally sickening.” Some people just can’t handle arson prone killer cockroaches, I guess. Never mind them, because the rest of us get to revel in...

I don’t like rituals, period. Whether straitlaced (Christian) or darkly purposed (Satanic), I just find them creepy…and off. So while I won’t stand on ceremony, I will watch, with fascination, films that trot out such pageantry. One of my favorites is a two part TV mini-series, The Dark Secret of Harvest Home (1978). Oh, and its horror, but I’m sure you already guessed that.
Originally airing on NBC Monday, January 23rd (in the NBC Monday Night at the Movies slot) and Tuesday the 24th, 1978, Dark Secret was up against the CBS juggernaut of M*A*S*H/One Day at a Time/Lou Grant. But while many were watching Hawkeye, Schneider, et al crack wise, something insidious was brewing over at The Peacock.

If you were going to write a script following the further adventures of two Shakespearean characters, it's a safe bet Rosencrantz and Guildenstern wouldn't be the first names to spring to mind. For those who don't know, they are two minor characters from Shakespeare's Hamlet. They become the focus of Tom Stoppard's 1966 play Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead, adapted for the big screen in 1990. The title is taken directly from a line spoken in Hamlet.
It is a fairly shapeless, existential film. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern (Gary Oldman and Tim Roth) travel around the wilderness, partaking in nonsensical debates about fate, chance, life and death. They seem unsure of where they are going or why, and often muddle up their own names as if they are not entirely certain of their identity.
They stumble across a travelling acting troupe fronted by the Lead Player (Richard Dreyfuss). He...

The groundbreaking 1974 television movie Born Innocent starring Linda Blair (The Exorcist) will be released on DVD by Hen’s Tooth Video on June 21.
Teenage runaway Linda Blair falls victim to the juvenile justice system in Born Innocent.
In the TV film, Blair stars as Chris Parker, a 14-year-old repeat runaway who has been detained by police. When her father (Richard Jaeckel, The Drowning Pool) refuses to take her back, Chris is made a ward of the court and sent to the State Home for Girls. There, she falls victim to an indifferent juvenile justice system that cannot help the troubled teens it merely warehouses.
Based on the book by Creighton Brown Burnham and directed by Donald Wrye and co-staring Joanna Miles, Allyn Ann McLerie and Mary Murphy, this new DVD edition includes a graphic rape scene considered so shocking on its initial NBC network broadcast that it was cut from subsequent syndication prints.
