Two top drink masters have whipped up specialty drinks to clink on the big night, and they're guaranteed to fit into any movie-themed bash. Mixologist Jim Meehan of Manhattan's secret-chic bar Pdt recently concocted a punch inspired by Best Picture nominee War Horse. If there was ever any doubt that New York City dominates cocktail culture, last Saturday’s Spirit Awards, at the Tales of the Cocktail convention, in New Orleans, put all questions to rest. The nominees for Best American Cocktail Bar were all Manhattan locals: the East Village’s Death & Co. and P.D.T. and SoHo’s Pegu Club. Pegu Club took the award; the bar is often cited as the granddaddy of the modern mixology-oriented watering holes in New York City, with many of its disciples going on to work at places such as Death & Co. and Milk & Honey. For the World’s Best New Cocktail Bar, Brooklyn proudly represented with Clover Club, beating out Drink, in Boston, and Quo Vadis, in London. But in the all-important category of World’s Best Cocktail Bar and American Bartender of the Year, one New York City establishment left everyone else in the dust: P.
