Mark Harmon, or special agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs in a longtime role on CBS’s NCIS series, has signed with Gersh.
Harmon originated his Gibbs character with a guest appearance on Jag before being spun off to lead NCIS, a role he played on the CBS procedural for nearly two decades before signing off from his final case in 2021. Going into the ninth season, he was promoted to executive producer on NCIS and was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
In the 11th season, Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Harmon worked closely with showrunner Gary Glasberg on a special two-episode arc that reunited the Gibbs character with an old comrade working a case in New Orleans. Those episodes became the pilot for NCIS: Nola, also known as NCIS: New Orleans, with Harmon serving as executive producer on the spinoff.

Neil Patrick Harris made his debut in the entertainment business at age 13, opposite Whoopi Goldberg in the 1988 movie "Clara's Heart." But his life at the time was nothing like your typical child actor. Instead of living in Hollywood, Harris lived in Ruidoso, New Mexico, raised by two middle-class lawyers. Harris stumbled into Hollywood when playwright and "Clara's Heart" screenwriter Mark Medoff discovered him in a theater camp and advocated for his casting in the film.
Harris' performance in "Clara's Heart" garnered the novice actor a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The impressive debut led to a tantalizing television opportunity the following year. It wasn't necessarily the lead role in "Doogie Howser, M.D." that caught the attention of the Harris family, but rather its creators.
When Steven Bochco and David E. Kelley created a series about a 16-year-old child prodigy doctor, little did they know they'd be luring...

Though there have been deaf characters in movies for decades they were rarely played by hearing impaired actors. Hollywood was looking for big names for their movies and overlooked performers who were deaf. Case in point: Did you know that Loretta Young played deaf characters in both 1939’s “The Story of Alexander Graham Bell” and 1944’s “And Now Tomorrow”? And hearing actors Jane Wyman and Patty Duke won Oscars playing deaf characters. It wasn’t until 1986’s “Children of a Lesser God” that a deaf actress, Marlee Matlin, won an Oscar for playing a deaf character.
Change has been slow since then, but this past year has been encouraging. Paul Raci received an Oscar nomination this year as a Vietnam Vet who became hearing impaired in the conflict runs a shelter for recovering hearing impaired substance abuse addicts in “Sound of Metal.” Teenage deaf performer Millicent Simmonds returned this year...

Since we’ve already had faith-based features involving football, baseball (“Where Hope Grows”), basketball (“Slamma Jamma”), boxing (“Carman: The Champion”), competitive skateboarding (“Hardflip”) and even mixed martial arts (“The Fight Within”), it was doubtless inevitable that someone would produce a movie where the Lord works in mysterious ways on the golf course. Robert Redford’s “The Legend of Bagger Vance” (2000) didn’t quite qualify, given the nondenominational nature of its spirituality. On the other hand, “Walking With Herb” is explicitly and unashamedly upfront about depicting how an agent of God, or someone of an even higher pay grade, might directly intervene in providing a shot at redemption — and no handicap at all — for a golfer far from the fairway.

Mark Medoff, the playwright who wrote Tony Award-winning play “Children of a Lesser God,” died Tuesday in Las Cruces, N.M. He was 79.
His daughter Jessica Medoff Bunchman posted news of his death on Facebook, and the Las Cruces Sun-News attributed the cause to cancer.
“Children of a Lesser God” starred John Rubinstein and Phyllis Frelich in the original 1980 Broadway production, though the play was first staged at New Mexico State and then in Los Angeles at the Mark Taper Forum. The pair played a deaf woman and a speech therapist at a state school for the deaf who try to build a relationship despite difficulties in understanding each other’s perspectives.

Anthony Edwards and Julie White (Transformers) have been cast in major recurring roles opposite Kiefer Sutherland on the upcoming third season of Designated Survivor at its new network, Netflix. This marks a reunion for ER alum Edwards and new Designated Survivor showrunner Neal Baer who also served as showrunner on the long-running NBC medical drama.
In season 3 of Designated Survivor, produced by eOne, President Kirkman (Sutherland) will face a political reality… campaigning. What does it take to make a leader? What price will he be willing to pay? This season will explore today’s world of campaigning, smear tactics, debates, campaign finance and “fake news.” Democracy, as we know it, will hang in the balance.
Edwards will play Mars Harper, the President’s Chief of Staff. Harper is likable and folksy in his manner, and uses that gentility to impose his will. Savvy, experienced, and professional, Harper has served many administrations in many capacities.

A single Tony Award nomination for Children of a Lesser God wasn’t enough to keep the production going: Producer Hal Luftig says the Broadway revival will close with the Sunday, May 27 performance.
The Mark Medoff play, originally staged on Broadway in 1980, was revived by director Kenny Leon and stars Joshua Jackson, Lauren Ridloff and Anthony Edwards.
Ridloff, a former Miss Deaf America, was Tony-nominated last week for Best Actress in a Play. Her well-received performance – kudos include award nominations from the New York Drama League and the Outer Critics Circle, as well as a Theatre World Award – faces tough competition for the Tony in Amy Schumer (Meteor Shower), Condola Rashad (Saint Joan) and, especially, Glenda Jackson (Three Tall Women).
But overall mixed reviews have been followed by sluggish box office. For the week ending May 6, Children of a Lesser God, at Broadway’s Studio 54, grossed $297,762, just 30% of its...

Decades before “mansplaining” came along to fill a void in our national vocabulary, Mark Medoff’s Tony-winning play (and later movie) Children of a Lesser God provided both a case study and a denunciation of the infuriating male inclination to tell women just what to feel and how to say it.
Now, 38 years after the play’s New York debut, a Broadway revival directed by Kenny Leon at the Roundabout Theatre Company’s Studio 54 starring Joshua Jackson, Lauren Ridloff and Anthony Edwards repeats the lesson to an audience that might not need to be taught. Even with a White House inhabited by a man whose grotesque displays and insults include a resurfaced one aimed at Marlee Matlin, this play no longer has the power to surprise with what was once the unorthodox notion that the “disabled” can speak for themselves, thank you very much, an ability that just might entail rejecting the word “disabled.

Mark Medoff wrote “Children of a Lesser God” specifically for Phyllis Frelich, a deaf actress who made her professional debut as the character Sarah Norman in the 1979 production at the Mark Taper Forum and went on to play the part on Broadway the following year. The deaf actress Marlee Matlin appeared opposite William Hurt in the 1986 film version. Now, Lauren Ridloff, who starred as Sarah in the Berkshire Theater production last year, reprises the role on Broadway, continuing the tradition of deaf actresses who come out of nowhere and knock us off our feet.

A star-studded cast convened to bring one of history’s great mountaineering disasters to the screen in Everest.
Based on the May 1996 incident in which eight climbers from two different parties lost their lives when the world’s tallest summit was hit by a blizzard, Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur’s (2 Guns) 3D epic features Jake Gyllenhaal and Jason Clarke as the experienced, but ultimately overwhelmed, guides of each team. Other climbers and concerned parties are played by Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Keira Knightley, Robin Wright, Sam Worthington, Emily Watson and Michael Kelly — the latter plays Jon Krakauer, whose book Into Thin Air is one of several personal chronicles of the disaster.
Shot in Italy, Britain and Nepal, including at Everest’s South Base Camp when an even deadlier avalanche elsewhere on the mountain took 16 lives in 2014, the film is an epic depiction of nature’s power at its most awesome,...

"There's no oxygen!" Universal has unveiled the incredibly intense first trailer for Everest, the movie from director Baltasar Kormákur telling the true story of one of the climbing disasters on Mount Everest. The ensemble cast features Jake Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley, and Emily Watson. They shot this on location in the Dolomites, and it looks and feels real, which is important because Mount Everest is such a spectacular and singular landmark. Thankfully this footage looks intense and not overly cheesy or dumbed down, I'm looking forward to it quite a damn bit actually. Everest is my jam, and this is my kind of film. Take a look. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Baltasar Kormákur's Everest, direct from Universal's YouTube: For more info on the film visit the official website or you can follow: @UniversalPics/@Working_Title.

The mountain climbing drama Everest doesn't arrive until next fall, and it's one of our 20 Most Anticipated Movies of 2015. But so far we've only seen one photo from the film that has quite an impressive cast that includes Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, Jake Gyllenhaal and John Hawkes as climbers facing the titular monster mountain that has claimed many lives. Now a new photo has surfaced from the film with Gyllenhaal as the most prominent climber. And while I'm pretty sure that's Brolin on the far right of the image (see it below), it's difficult to decipher just who is standing next to him. Look below! Here's the new photo from Baltasar Kormakur's Everest (via Empire): Check out the first photo from Baltasar Kormakur's Everest with Jason Clarke right here. Tony-winning deaf actress Phyllis Frelich, who originated the lead role in Children of a Lesser God on Broadway, died Thursday of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). She was 70. Frelich’s husband Robert Steinberg told the AP of her passing. The two were married for 46 years, during which time their relationship inspired Mark Medoff to write Children of a Lesser God at New Mexico State University. When the play moved to Los Angeles and then Broadway Frelich played the lead role of Sarah Norman in the story of the relationship between a deaf woman and a hearing speech pathologist and won a Tony for the role in 1980. Marlee Matlin played the Sarah role in the 1986 film adaptation, for which she won the Oscar. Frelich, originally from Devils Lake, North Dakota, came from a family of deaf parents and siblings and began acting while studying at Gallaudet College. She met Steinberg in the...

Today we get our first look at Everest, a promising film coming to us from director Baltasar Kormákur (2 Guns). Though the project has a fantastic cast headlining it, the image (seen above) only shows off Jason Clarke. Presumably Josh Brolin, John Hawkes and Jake Gyllenhaal are the men behind him, but it’s only Clarke’s face that we can see.
As one of two competing films about the titular mountain, Everest is arriving in just over a year. It was penned by Mark Medoff and Simon Beaufoy and tells the real-life story of a “doomed expedition to the top of the titular mountain in 1996.” It’s material that will no doubt make for a compelling film and given the fact that Beaufoy wrote 127 Hours, another movie that told a riveting true story, I think Everest is in good hands.

Shooting has started on mountain peril movie Everest and, boy, does it look chilly. Director Baltasar Kormakur has taken his ensemble cast to Nepal, looking to film his account of an ill-fated, storm-beset 1996 expedition in vérité conditions. He's found them.Somewhere behind Jason Clarke - playing New Zealand team leader Rob Hall - are Josh Brolin, John Hawkes and Jake Gyllenhaal in this first-look still from the film. Each is grizzled, determined and a very long way from the nearest craft services wagon. Kormakur, whose 2 Guns was a modest hit last year, is overseeing a story made famous by Jon Krakauer's book Into Thin Air. In it, two separate Everest expeditions will run into tragic difficulties in a sudden storm with life-threatening consequences. The screenplay is adapted by Mark Medoff (Children Of A Lesser God) and Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire).Emily Watson, Michael Kelly and The Bridge’s Thomas M. Wright are also aboard.

Motion Picture Purgatory took a couple of weeks off, but Trembles is back today with a blast from the past entitled When You Comin' Back, Red Ryder? from the late 1970's featuring revival preacher turned actor Marjoe Gortner. I remember it well; it's a real shame no one has ever released it on DVD so others can experience it.
In the film directed by Milton Katselas, Gortner plays a drug dealer whose car breaks down in a small U.S. town. In turn the townspeople become victim to his unique brand of physical and mental torture. It's based on a play by Mark Medoff (who also wrote the script) and co-stars Candy Clark, Lee Grant, Hal Linden, Peter Firth, Pat Hingle, Audra Lindley, and Anne Ramsey.
