Spanish sales agents are on some kind of roll. The European Film Market during the Berlinale proved robust, and Malaga Film Festival better still.
“Malaga was great for our movies,” Latido Films’ Antonio Saura reported at its conclusion. “We have one of the best lineups in our history covering all genres and all very marketable.”
That lineup includes Jim Sheridan’s drama “Recreation,” starring Vicky Krieps, and “La Casa” and “Saturn Return,” both Malaga standouts that together won seven awards.
With the market more receptive to Spanish projects, it’s important to pick the right genre mix. “Definitely for thrillers, for animated films, things are good. Spanish thrillers are prestigious now. They’ve performed well theatrically in many countries,” says Filmax’s head of international Iván Diaz. But for comedies, dramas or romantic comedies, it’s a bit more arduous. “If you’re trying to sell Spanish romantic comedies, however,...

During a masterclass at the Nouvelles Vagues Festival in Biarritz, France, Penélope Cruz revealed that she will soon make her directorial debut with a mystery documentary feature.
Cruz, a guest of honor of this inaugural edition of Nouvelles Vagues, took part in a Q&a following the French premiere of “On the Fringe,” a commentary on Spain’s eviction crisis which she produced with Alvaro Longoria. Set over the course of 24 hours in a working class neighborhood of Madrid, the film follows several marginalized characters whose fates are intertwined as they struggle financially and face eviction.
Cruz said she set up her production company, Moonlyon, with Laura Espeso (“The Good Boss”) and Spanish powerhouse Mediapro Studio in 2022 to pursue “meaningful” projects as a producer and director.

There is a lot of advice given to those who are going through the loss of a loved one, but the truth is that there is no formula, each person responds to grief differently. Now, in times of post-pandemic, it is more than necessary to reflect on this subject, both to deal with death and to help those who are bereaved.
Watching films that address the theme can be fruitful to observe and learn, for this reason, we have put together a list of excellent movies with characters who are going through or have gone through the end of a cycle. Among the selections are Little Big Women (2020) by Joseph Chen-Chieh Hsu and Bunny Drop by Sabu.

Barcelona-based studio Filmax has closed first major territory deals on writer-director Paul Urkijo “Irati,” a new addition to movies which have drawn on the history and legends of the Basque Country in the north of Spain, which have provided rich pickings for Spanish film-makers such as Julio Medem (“Cows”) and Alex De la Iglesia (“Witching & Bitching”).
The film also adds to Europe’s burgeoning canon of action movies as actioners made much of the running at the American Film Market, and dominate streaming platform non-English language most watched lists: Think “Blood Red Sky,” “The Crab,” “The Takedown” and “Below Zero” for Netflix.

Moving waves on Spain’s film-tv scene when it launched in early May, Beta Fiction Spain has unveiled its first project as a producer, “Dolores,” a portrait of Spain’s Dolores Ibarruri, a worldwide icon of the workers’ movement and struggle against fascism.
The feature film is inspired by “Pasionaria. La vida inesperada de Dolores Ibárruri,” a question-posing non-fiction book by Spanish historian Diego Díaz Alonso published in 2020.
Underscoring Beta Fiction Spain’s ability to attach best-of-class Spanish talent, the screenplay for “Pasionaria” is being penned by two of Spain’s foremost film-tv scribes, Alejandro Hernández, co-writer of Alejandro Amenábar’s “While at War” and Mariano Barroso’s “What the Future Holds,” and Michel Gaztambide, a writer on Julio Medem’s milestone 1992 debut “Cows,” Enrique Urbizu’s best picture Goya winner “No Rest for the Wicked” and Freddy Highmore heist thriller “The Vault,” the second highest-grossing Spanish movie of 2021.

Appropriately enough given the show’s enigmatic nature, the slow drip of information about a second season of Spanish genre legend Alex de la Iglesia’s occult horror series “30 Coins” has, for the most part, been cryptic at best. That tradition continued Friday, after HBO Max confirmed the second season, when “Money Heist’s” Najwa Nimri, one of Spain’s biggest film and TV stars, teased her participation in the upcoming season.
Apart from the show’s three leads – Eduard Fernández as Father Vergara, Megan Montaner as veterinarian-turned-demon-hunter Elena and Miguel Ángel Silvestre as Mayor Paco – no other casting has yet been confirmed, but Nimri posted an Instagram story which included part of the Season 2 teaser and the phrase: “We start a new adventure,” while also tweeting #30Monedas – the show’s Spanish-language title.

Since the 1980s Alberto Iglesias has created beautiful, thrilling music for the screen working broadly throughout his native Spain and Hollywood and with a versatile array of directors and genres—underpinned by his iconic collaborations with Pedro Almodóvar. Iglesias' film suites are fashioned with lucious jazz and emotive orchestral poetry. He beautifully balances the tension of theatrical melodrama with voyages into memory and the vibrancy of inner-city life, with its sophisticated glamour and debauched underbellies. This mix provides a healthy dose of Iglesias collaborations with Almodóvar, from their early years with films such as The Flower of My Secret (1995) and Live Flesh (1997) to this year’s Parallel Mothers and The Human Voice (where Igelsias’s key focus was to riff on his Almodóvar themes of the past). Julio Medem’s Sex and Lucia (2001) defines the 2000s moment of contemporary Spanish cinema’s bursts on the global sphere, soundtracked by that early millenium “Igelsias” sound.

Kairos is composed by circumstances capturing the most elusive part of our lives, half-fate, half-luck, activated by human agency. His orchestration of character development over the course of a lifetime in Lovers of the Arctic Circle (1998) or a night, as in Room in Rome (2010), represents the magical transformative power of intersubjectivity and intimacy. Exclusive: Wme has signed Úrsula Corberó, a breakout on the hit Spanish-language Netflix series Money Heist (La Casa de Papel), for representation in all areas. The competitive signing comes as she is next set to star in Julio Medem’s El árbol de la sangre which bows in Spain in November. The agency will look to land her on this side of the pond.
Netflix earlier this year said Money Heist is the streaming service’s most-watched non-English-language series. The thriller stars Álvaro Morte as El Professor, a mysterious criminal mastermind planning an epic heist. He recruits a group of eight thieves who take hostages and lock themselves in the Royal Mint of Spain while El Professor manipulates the police to carry out his plan. Corbero plays Tokio and stars alongside Itziar Ituno, Paco Tous and Alba Flores.

The 5th Annual Key West Film Festival has announced its official 2016 lineup, including the opening night film, “20th Century Women,” directed by Mike Mills and starring Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig and Billy Crudup. As part of the festival’s signature Critics Focus program, MTV’s Chief Film Critic Amy Nicholson will present and lead a conversation around the film, alongside David Fear, Senior Film/TV Editor of Rolling Stone.
Director of Programming Michael Tuckman said of Nicholson’s pick, “I could not be more thrilled with Amy Nicholson’s choice of ’20th Century Women’ to kick off our 5th Anniversary edition of festival. Annette Bening’s performance is Oscar-deserving and the rich depth of the balance of the leading cast is Altman-esque in its quality. Amy’s discussion after the film will bring a cunning critic’s eye to this fabulous film for audiences.”

Even Penélope Cruz’s charisma can’t save this crass tear-jerker
Julio Medem’s melodrama leans heavily on the star appeal of Penélope Cruz. But even with Cruz radiating beatific charisma, there is little to recommend this unashamedly manipulative tale of a breast cancer survivor who strikes up a brief but meaningful relationship with a widower (Luis Tosar). The treatment of the subject is rather crass – Medem’s directorial flourishes are undermined by a score that pushes every weepy button it can shake a quavering violin at.

Cruz’s superb performance elevates this lovely if sometimes flawed drama about family, friendship and illness
There is such a lovely performance here from Penélope Cruz: rich, intelligent, generous – her best since Almodóvar’s Volver. Without Cruz, this movie might not have added up to as much. But with her vivid presence, it shimmers and throbs. Writer-director Julio Medem has created a very emotional drama; the word “weepie” does it a disservice, as it did to the movies of Douglas Sirk. Cruz plays Magda, an unemployed teacher and single mum to a bright teenage boy called Dani (Teo Planell). At the moment she discovers she has breast cancer, Magda forms a tender relationship with Arturo, a man dealing with a tragedy of his own: this is another of the film’s outstanding performances – that excellent Spanish actor, Luis Tosar. The movie further creates a kind of platonic love triangle,...

Title: Ma Ma Director: Julio Medem Starring: Penelope Cruz, Luis Tosar, Asier Etxeandia, Alex Brendemuhl, Silvia Abascal, Teo Planell, Samuel Viyuela. The Spanish melodramatic movie ‘Ma Ma’, presented at the 2015 Toronto Film Festival, marks the return of director Julio Medem. The winner of a Goya (for his feature ‘Vacas’) – whose works have been compared to Krzysztof Kie?lowski’s – goes lyrical, with the story of a single mother who is diagnosed cancer. Magda (Penelope Cruz) is an unemployed teacher, who forms a sudden bond with Arturo (Luis Tosar), a widowed soccer scout, while she goes to see her son (Teo Planell) play a game. Thus begins a journey, that [ Read More ]

Cancer, unemployment rates, the economic crisis, faith, morality, the fate of souls, pregnancy and concern for Russian orphans are the components of Julio Medem’s “Ma Ma,” a tragedy pile-on that is laughably ludicrous when it isn’t tedious. The writer/director gets an unreserved performance from Penélope Cruz (who produced the picture too), great work from cinematographer Kiko de […]

With a gentle humor in the light of the pain it explores, Julio Medem’s Ma Ma keeps it lens squarely focused on Penélope Cruz’s Magda, a young mother diagnosed with breast cancer and various stages of coping with a new reality. Putting off going to the doctor, the news is bleak, requiring the amputation of her right breast. As she comes to terms with the implications of this new reality, both as a mother, a women, and an object of desire, she studies herself in the mirror in a few sequences of somewhat heavy-handed symbolism.
At her son’s soccer game she encounters a talent scout Arturo (Luis Tosar) who receives a phone call with awful news: a car accident has killed his daughter and wife in a sequence that is abrupt and to the point. Rushing with Arturo to the hospital, she becomes sucked into his world.

While her roles thus far here in Hollywood this year virtually went unseen with Zoolander 2 and The Brothers Grimsby, Penélope Cruz had to go back to her roots for a more substantial role. ma ma, a new film from Julio Medem, follows the actress (also serving as a producer for the first time) as an unemployed teacher afflicted with breast cancer who finds love. Ahead of a a release next month in the U.S., a new trailer has now arrived.
“ma ma is right up my street: Large emotional and dramatic intensity, and it turns on the intimacy of the characters — one woman, two men, played by Luis Tosar and Asier Etxeandia, who love her, and a 10-year-old boy,” Medem said about the film. “It’s the first time I portray a character who’s not a woman and lover but a mother. Maternity is key in Ma Ma.

Guided by a go-for-broke performance from Penélope Cruz, lovely work from cinematographer Kiko de la Rica, and a score by Alberto Iglesias, the ingredients are all here for Julio Medem's "Ma Ma" to be something special. Unfortunately, I really didn't like it when it screened at Tiff last fall, but fans of Cruz may want to give it a whirl, because she gives a solid turn, even if she deserves better material. From director Julio Medem ("Sex & Lucia"), the movie follows Magda, who goes through no shortage of health, romantic, and professional turmoil, but remains resilient and optimistic through it all, as she always finds a way to work through life's struggles and heartbreaks. Here's the official synopsis: Academy Award®-winning actress and producer Penélope Cruz delivers an extraordinarily emotional performance in ma ma, the newest film from acclaimed director Julio Medem (Sex And LUCÍA). And Soon the Darkness: Pesce’s Debut a Superbly Stylized Nightmare
If Portugal were the portal to some Lynchian netherworld of dreams deferred, it would look something like Nicolas Pesce’s sumptuously grotesque directorial debut, The Eyes of My Mother. A striking palette of black and white cinematography from Zach Kuperstein recalls the scarred, destitute lives from the ruins of Arturo Ripstein’s filmography, a macabre yet uncharacteristically sound portrait of psychological unraveling. We all know the kind of potent degeneration to be fashioned on isolated farmhouses where dysfunctional children are paired with musings of surgical practices, as seen in films from Haneke or even last year’s Goodnight Mommy. Pesce, who previously directed multiple music videos, as well as assistant editor on Josh Mond’s James White (2015), debuts a spectacularly gruesome calling card which may deconstruct the notion of the physical lens through which living beings observe the world,...

The writer/director gets an unreserved performance from Penélope Cruz (who produced the picture too), great work from cinematographer Kiko de la Rica, a could’ve-been-better score from Alberto Iglesias, in a movie that clearly involved a lot of very talented contributors. So it's too bad that none at any point questioned Medem’s movie, which falls flat on its face thanks to a severe lack of self-awareness and an air of dramatic self-importance. The film kicks off with a helluva day for Magda (Cruz). A routine visit to Raúl (Àlex Brendemühl), the handsomest singing gynaecologist ever, reveals that she has stage three breast cancer. We also learn at the same...
