Karl Urban Joins Red, McMahon is VP

24 December 2009 12:09 PM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Mania reports that the busy Karl Urban (currently trying to take a bite out of Paul Bettany as the heavy in another comic book adaptation, “Priest”) has just added to his schedule by joining the cast of Bruce Willis’ comic book movie “Red”. Urban will play a character name Cooper. Meanwhile, Mania confirms that Julian McMahon will indeed be playing the Vice President of the United States. Likely, McMahon’s character is the weasel that begins the cycle of violence when he orders the hit on Bruce Willis’ character, Paul Moses, a former CIA black ops killer who has since retired. Robert Schwentke is directing the film, based on the comic book by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner. The cast is quite formidable, including Willis, Urban, McMahon, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Mary-Louise Parker, John C. Reilly, Brian Cox, Ernest Borgnine and Richard Dreyfuss. The impressive cast of Red is growing. Mania reports that Karl Urban is the latest actor to join the cast, in the mysterious role of "Cooper." All other details of the character are unknown.

Urban joins the likes of Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, John C. Reilly, and Mary-Louise Parker in a story about a retired CIA agent (Willis) targeted by a mysterious assassin. The story also confirms an earlier report that Julian McMahon will play the Vice-President of the United States and that Richard Dreyfuss and Ernest Borgnine are officially in the cast.

The adaptation of Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner's comic book starts shooting in January, with direction from Robert Schwentke using a script by Erich and Jon Hoeber (Whiteout). The recently revised release date has Red scheduled to open on October 22, 2010.

Director Robert Schwentke’s adaptation of Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner’s “Red” already boasts an impressive lineup of stars including Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, John C. 'Nip/Tuck' finale: 'Modern Family's' Eric Stonestreet guests

16 December 2009 2:43 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

"Modern Family" is airing a rerun Wednesday night, but an hour later you can catch the show's Eric Stonestreet in an original performance. Just don't expect a lot of laughs.

Stonestreet, who plays Cameron on the ABC show, is guest-starring in the season finale of "Nip/Tuck." He'll be playing a death-row inmate who's too obese to execute, so prison officials pressure Sean (Dylan Walsh) and Christian (Julian McMahon) into giving him liposuction in exchange for possibly letting Matt (John Hensley) go free.

So, you know, just another day at McNamara/Troy. I confess I've fallen off the "Nip/Tuck" bandwagon, but the brief glimpses of Stonestreet in the preview below has piqued my interest a little bit. If for no other reason than to see Stonestreet play a character who's vastly different, it might be worth a little DVR space.

Nip/Tuck star Kelly Carlson had to endure seven hours in make-up to pile on the pounds for the hit show - and her prosthetic fat suit was so stifling it made her pass out.

The actress gains 130 kilograms (300 pounds) in a dream sequence, during which her character's boyfriend, played by Julian McMahon, imagines her obese.

Making her look fat was a long and gruelling process, and Carlson is still haunted by the uncomfortable body suit she had to wear.

The actress tells Star magazine, "The process was awful. It took about six or seven hours. It starts with a mold of your body, a cast from foot to neck. You have to stand up and it hardens around you. It gets so suffocating that you can pass out - and I did." »

Will 'Red' be So Good Not Even Summit Can Mess It Up?

13 November 2009 1:15 PM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Let's be honest, without Twilight we probably wouldn't even be talking about Summit Entertainment any longer. They have, of course, been around much longer than most of us realize with films such as Memento, American Pie, Mr. and#038; Mrs. Smith, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas as part of their production company cred. However, as distributors they have Twilight and the modest hit in Knowing (which they handled domestically and not internationally). Beyond that what are we really talking about?

They managed to squander what I understand to be a rather entertaining teen comedy in Sex Drive, Push bombed, Astro Boy is still in theaters but you wouldn't know it, Sorority Row (a teen horror with the promise of nudity) earned $11 million and the sin of all sins, Summit's 17%-Rotten Tomatoes rated Fly Me To The Moon made more money at the box-office »

Wanna make your comic miniseries-turned-feature film into a big-buzz event? Jam it full of interesting actors. It all started with Bruce Willis.
