Leonardo DiCaprio and Al Pacino saluted Martin Scorsese‘s dedication and risk-taking at his Santa Barbara International Film Festival tribute, while the filmmaker spoke about the importance of “individual artistic expression.”
More than 300 people attended the black-tie gala on Thursday night in Scorsese’s honor at the Ritz-Carlton Bacara in Santa Barbara, where festival exec director Roger Durling asked, “Can you think of another director who remained so relevant for so many decades?”
That fact was punctuated with generous clips (assembled by Mike McGee) of the filmmaker’s work, including a sizzle reel with dozens of film moments that demonstrated his wide range since his 1973 breakthrough with “Mean Streets.”
In presenting the Kirk Douglas Award to Scorsese, DiCaprio said, “One of the most remarkable things about Marty is the generosity that he exudes to everybody on the set. He treats every one of us as a real collaborator and he...

Thomas Kinkade, the self-proclaimed “Painter of Light,” died April 6 of what appear to be natural causes at his home in Los Gatos, Calif. He was 54.
The painter, who claimed to be the most-collected living artist in the United States, is survived by his wife, Nanette, and four daughters. “Thom provided a wonderful life for his family,” Nanette Kinkade said in a statement. “We are shocked and saddened by his death.”
Kinkade rose to prominence in the mid ’90s as a spiritual heir to Norman Rockwell. In the more than 1,000 paintings that he produced during his career, Kinkade offered up an...

There aren’t many parallels between motherhood and golf, but Annika Sörenstam says her former career prepared her for life with daughter Ava Madelyn in at least one important way.
“Traveling as a professional golfer, I thought I had a lot of luggage, but that’s nothing to what I have today,” she reveals.
“Now it’s strollers, it’s the diaper bag, it’s the car seat … You know, it’s just stuff, [but] I think traveling on tour prepared me for traveling heavier with a lot more bags.”

With a well-earned reputation as one of the greatest female golfers in history, Annika Sörenstam could surely afford help when it comes to caring for Ava Madelyn, her 6-month-old daughter with husband Mike McGee.
However, she tells Golf.com that the couple prefer to go it alone.
“We decided that we wanted to figure out things ourselves,” Sörenstam, 39, explains.
“It’s something that we’re obviously going to look into. But we really want to raise Ava ourselves.”
Noting the “24/7″ nature of parenting, the golf pro says that life with Ava has been “wonderful” thus far.

The first priority on the list has been adapting to their daughter’s schedule — something neither Annika nor Mike completely anticipated! “Despite all the warnings, I don’t think we realized how much there is to do with a newborn,...
