Comedy is what we need right now, says Nicholas Hytner, who ran London’s National Theatre for a decade.
It’s fine to have heavy-lifting dramas by Ibsen or Schiller, but boy-oh-boy laughter is an increasingly uplifting necessity.
Which is where Guys & Dolls and James Corden, post his life on The Late Late Show, come in.
Hytner, partnered with longtime executive Nick Starr, now own and control London’s Bridge Theatre and is overseeing a fully immersive revival of the classic Broadway musical Guys & Dolls, choreographed by Dame Arlene Phillips (Strictly Come Dancing) and now in early previews.
It stars Daniel Mays as Nathan Detroit, Andrew Richardson (A Call to Spy) as Sky Masterson, Celinde Schoenmaker (Rocketman) as Sarah Brown and Marisha Wallace (Aladdin) as long-suffering Miss Adelaide. Cedric Neal plays Nicely-Nicely Johnson. Also in the cast are Jordan Castle,...

Returning to the world of Paddington following the huge success of the first movie is co-writer and director Paul King. It's a magical film he's fashioned too, and he spared us some time to chat about it. Here's how that conversation went...

I interviewed you about eight years ago for Bunny And The Bull at the McM Comic Con...
And look how well that went.
How things have progressed...
There was no suite then, was there?
There wasn’t much of a view, either.
No. I think we pretty much had to hitch to get there.
Pleased with the progress?
It’s been very nice.

With a hiss of brakes, and a rush of steam, the next phase of SFW9’s launch is engaged. We have lots and lots to tell you, so settle down, grab your beverage of choice, put your feet up, and let’s go!
That’s right folks… Its time to start planning for SFW9, coming to you next March in Wales and we have a little bit of bad news but a massive whole bunch of good news to soften that blow. First things first though: there are only 18, yes 18 rooms left on site for the weekend so if you don’t have your tickets then you better get on that now. So first off here is a little comment from Sfw themselves with a little bad news…
First off, the bad news … As regular SFWers know, sometimes guests have to drop out, and since the last announcement, both Colin Baker...

This round-table interview was tons of fun. I got a minute to share a table with Andrew Garfield, Spider-Man and Marc Webb, director of Spider-Man and a gentleman I am very much in favor of.
Why do you like Marc Webb so much, Da7e? Good question, reader. He was my first one-on-one interview ever for this site during his (500) Days of Summer press tour. We shared a container of blueberries and even though our site has changed hands a few times since then, The Way-Way Back Machine has archived the discussion I had with web about music video reality, back in 2009.
I wasn't given access to Webb during The Amazing Spider-Man, which was probably for the best as I was chasing another story about the interactions between Columbia and Webb concerning lots of stuff that I couldn't care about less now that Webb gets his Spider-Man trilogy with Andrew Garfield.

During our visit to the set of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, we caught a brief chat with Peter Parker himself, Andrew Garfield...
For many young actors, landing the role of Spider-Man would be a dream come true. And in 2012‘s The Amazing Spider-Man, there was a real sense in Andrew Garfield’s performance that he was enjoying every moment in the part.
During our visit to the set of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, however, director Marc Webb and the producers were quite open about the first movie’s shortcomings, with the script being the most commonly-cited weak point. But even the 2012 film’s harshest critics would agree that Garfield’s performance shone through, and as we sat with him for a round-table interview between takes, his enthusiasm for the character was still very much in evidence.
Here, Andrew talks about the efforts gone to improve on the first movie,...

Day 35. Cal McCrystal and the Oscorp Security Team. They'll make you laugh... and then they'll literally kill you. twitter.com/MarcW/status/3…— Marc Webb (@MarcW) March 25, 2013 It seems these gentlemen will be responsible for keeping Norman Osborn (Chris Cooper) safe while he works villainous machinations at Oscorp. Hopefully we'll get a few more details on that character very soon. In The Amazing Spider-Man™ 2, for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy – between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away – but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter...

"Amazing Spider-Man 2" director Marc Webb has posted another set photo from the sequel's Oscorp location, thus cementing the 35th day of shooting's place in Twitter's memory banks. The photo shows a group of Oscorp security guards and Cal McCrystal (in a to-be-determined role) just hangin' out on set, posing like Oscorp's official boy band. One thing's for sure: these guards appear to be a lot less armored up than their peers over at the Ravencroft Institute. In fact, we wouldn't mind hanging out with these guys. This is our first look at the sequel's Oscorp set, which looks fairly industrial and not unlike a prison in this one shot.
Check out the full tweet below.

Sci-Fi London kept the best for last. As soon as the title sequence began (by Beehive Design) I knew I was in for a treat. Ghosts With Shit Jobs, from auteur Jim Munroe – a groundbreaking creator of "indie culture alternatives" – was sheer delight.
Munroe writes graphic novels and comics (he has been compared to Philip K Dick) and makes video games and movies. His working method puts him at the cutting edge of science fiction multimedia: Ghosts With Shit Jobs had several directors, all collaborators worked for free, filming took two months and as the favours rolled in it took another three years to complete the film.

Tim Minchin and Stephen Fry are among the new Cultural Olympiad acts, while protestors take to the stage at Stratford-upon-Avon and encourage audiences to rip up their seats
Starter's orders
After more than a few false dawns, the Cultural Olympiad finally spluttered into life this week, with the unveiling of the full lineup for the London 2012 festival, which will take place from 21 June to 9 September. Many of the events have already been announced and some of them (rather confusingly) have already begun (such as the World Shakespeare festival, which kicked off last Monday). But new acts include comedians Tim Minchin and Stephen Fry, who will both perform as part of the event.
Awards season in full swing
In the Us, meanwhile, theatre awards season kicked off, with the Drama League announcing the nominations for its awards. They often serve as a fairly good indicator for what might fare well at...

The Broadway production of One Man, Two Guvnors, imported from London and adapted from the commedia dell’arte farce A Servant of Two Masters, opened last night on Broadway. The reviews are in and are fantastic. I won’t bother trying to describe the plot — with a farce, it’s too hard to do — but director Nicholas Hytner‘s production and its leading man, James Cordon, are among the funniest things in recent memory, according to Variety. Variety magazine’s review stated “Aided by physical theater expert and associate director Cal McCrystal, director Nicholas Hytner expertly harnesses that comedy energy to build a tight, towering succession of character shtick, sight gags, slapstick and chase sequences unseen since Noises Off.” Ben Brantley of the New York Times seconded that feeling in his review, saying “It’s a rich, slow-spreading smile, like butter melting in a skillet over a low flame.
