[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Law & Order Season 23 Finale “In Harm’s Way.”] Heading into the Law & Order finale, we knew that the NBC drama is about to lose another major character. Earlier this season, the show lost a lawyer, with Sam Waterston leaving, and Tony Goldwyn‘s Baxter coming in to replace Jack McCoy as Da (there’s now an election coming up). Now, the cops will be saying goodbye to their lieutenant, with Camryn Manheim exiting. But how was Kate Dixon written out? Well, she wasn’t. Instead, the focus was very much on the case and Baxter. It looks like the Season 24 premiere will have to reveal what happened to Dixon, much like this season’s did with Cosgrove, following Jeffrey Donovan‘s exit over hiatus. The case involved the murder of a sports star—but video reveals that Baxter was the intended target. He refuses to suspend his campaign, and with...

Law & Order is losing another veteran actor.
The NBC drama will bid farewell to star Camryn Manheim on May 16, the season 23 finale. The actress was a key part of the cast when Dick Wolf revived the flagship procedural for its 21st season.
Manheim becomes the second star to depart L&o this season with her upcoming exit coming on the heels of original star Sam Waterston, who exited in February as D.A. Jack McCoy. He had appeared in more than 400 episodes of the flagship series and returned to lead the revival that remains a high priority for both Wolf and NBC.
To fill the void created by Waterston’s exit, L&o recruited former Scandal favorite Tony Goldwyn to be the show’s new D.A. and join a cast that also includes Hugh Dancy, Reid Scott, Mechad Brooks and Odelya Halevi.

When Sam Waterson exited the series on Law & Order Season 23 Episode 5, it was a strong story that was still disappointing because it didn't contain any flashbacks or other tributes to his iconic character. The same thing happened here.

Law & Order Spinoff In Danger Of Cancellation
NBC recently handed renewals to several of their shows. Law & Order will get another season. The flagship show was brought back in 2022 after an 11-year hiatus.
Law & Order: Svu currently holds the record as the longest-running primetime drama on television. It will continue its streak for at least another season. NBC renewed it for Season 26.
The network also renewed all three of its Chicago show franchise – Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med. But one troubled NBC show is facing cancellation after failing to secure a renewal.

Sam Waterson's departure from Law & Order left a hole that'll be hard to fill. Waterson played Jack McCoy for 30 years, making his name synonymous with the long-running police/lawyer procedural.
Someone had to take his place, and Tony Goldwyn is not only an accomplished actor in his own right but has appeared within the Law & Order universe before. (Goldwyn played Frank Goren on Law & Order: Criminal Intent.)
Goldwyn's Nicholas Baxter has only had a few episodes to shine in. He's a different type of district attorney than McCoy, so his character will take some getting used to, but the change in direction could be precisely what Law & Order Season 23 needs.
McCoy was often soft-spoken, though he could get loud when he was passionately angry and mostly stayed in his office. Baxter differentiated himself from the get-go; his first scene involved inserting himself into a crime scene and introducing himself.

Law & Order and Law & Order: Svu will be back for the 2024-25 season after NBC renewed the pair of shows but spinoff Law & Order: Organized Crime is in a slightly more precarious position.
The network has renewed Law & Order for Season 24, while Law & Order: Svu will be back for Season 26.

Three weeks after Law & Order bid farewell to Sam Waterston, the NBC procedural on Thursday introduced Tony Goldwyn as the newest District Attorney.
Usually, the legal part of the drama doesn’t happen until later in the episode, but Goldwyn’s Nicholas Baxter joined the action at the top of the hour as Detectives Jalen Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) and Vincent Riley (Reid Scott) are investigating the bludgeoning death of multi-millionaire Jonah Barlowe.

He lingers at the scene for only a few seconds before telling the detectives that “I’ll do everything in my power to create a constructive and transparent relationship with the police. That’s it.”

Tony Goldwyn is a true-blue network guy.
Taking over the prosecutor’s office for “Law & Order” in Season 23, the steely actor is set to debut District Attorney Nicholas Baxter on the revived legal drama Thursday, March 14 at 8 p.m. Et. The character introduction comes just two weeks after Sam Waterston stepped down as the legendary Jack McCoy. For his final appearance at NBC in Episode 4 “The Last Dance,” the iconic Da sacrificed his reelection campaign to fight corruption in the mayor’s office. Leaving his post after 30 years, McCoy assured his colleagues that the next Da would be an even stronger legal mind.
Replacing Waterston won’t be easy. The 83-year-old’s retirement from the series created a major vacancy in TV’s most famous police procedural. And that’s a genre already difficult to keep compelling in an increasingly divided America. “Law & Order” is still doing well in the ratings,...

Meet Nicholas Baxter, played by actor-director Tony Goldwyn, who succeeds Sam Waterston’s über-ethical Jack McCoy as Manhattan district attorney in Law & Order. McCoy recently retired—with a push from the mayor—after decades in the Da’s office, and Baxter joins in the March 14 episode eager to make some changes in his department. Goldwyn, a self-admitted fan, shares what to expect. Congratulations on becoming Law & Order’s new Da! You’re back in politics after playing the U.S. president on Scandal. I guess you don’t mind the demotion? Tony Goldwyn: No, no. [Laughs] The interesting job description is all that matters. This isn’t your first experience in Dick Wolf’s popular crime show franchise, right? I’m not a stranger to the Law & Order ecosystem. I directed an episode in 2006 of the mothership and the next year, I had a four-episode arc on Criminal Intent [during Seasons 6 and 7] as Frank,...

Tony Goldwyn is bringing some of his “magic” to Law & Order when he debuts as the new district attorney Nicholas Baxter in the March 14 episode. He takes over from Sam Waterston‘s Jack McCoy, who resigned in his final episode. “The end of an era, cheers to Sam,” Mehcad Brooks (who plays Detective Jalen Shaw) tells TV Insider. “He was a beacon of virtue for over two, three decades, really, and it was such an honor and a privilege to get to work with him. And what a funny, just enticing individual and just a lovely human being, an incredible actor, and he will be missed.” The promo, which you can watch above, offers a look at Goldwyn as Baxter and him and Price (Hugh Dancy) clashing. “He’s ambitious, and he wants headlines,” Price says. “He wants to do things his way,” Maroun (Odelya Halevi) adds. Brooks has been...

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for Season 23, Episode 4 of “Law & Order.”]
Among Sam Waterston’s last words as Jack McCoy was “integrity.”
The film and television actor walked away from “Law & Order” for good Thursday night, February 22, ending his 30-year stint as Dick Wolf’s most recognizable Manhattan D.A. in a mixed bag of an episode. An awkward Central Park swan song (goose song?), Season 23’s “Last Dance” demonstrates not only how much Waterston has changed as a performer — but just how little police procedurals have been able to evolve with socially divided network audiences in recent years.
Yes, Jack’s junkyard dog bravado gave way to a subtler anger in the series’ revival seasons; and he stopped sleeping with all those assistant district attorneys, which certainly helped. But the hero lawyer’s final chapter is chockfull of awkward political posturing that plays as indicative of a genre increasingly uncomfortable with its role in American culture. The...

The good news? It was an emotional last chapter that put things into perspective for Jack as he said one final goodbye to the job he’d done for years.
But where did it all go wrong?
Well, it’s a long story. Let’s dive in!

Saying goodbye to a beloved character is never easy, especially one who has graced our screens for three decades.
The good news is that Law & Order Season 23 Episode 5 didn't end by killing Jack McCoy. That would have been too heartbreaking to bear.
Instead, McCoy left on his own terms, standing up for justice one last time before handing in his resignation. If we had to say goodbye to him, this was how to do it.
I've recently complained that McCoy has been limited to sitting behind a desk and asking Nolan if he can win the case of the hour. But McCoy's swan song changed that.
This time, the roles were reversed. Nolan wanted to plead out Kelton's case, while McCoy wanted accountability for a senseless murder and didn't care who stood in his way.
That was the Jack McCoy I've known and loved since the early 90s. I...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Law & Order Season 23 Episode 5, “Last Dance.”] “It’s been a hell of a ride,” Jack McCoy says in one of Sam Waterston‘s last times on-screen on Law & Order (for now?). After more than 400 episodes, the Da says goodbye on the NBC drama in an episode that also brings him back into the courtroom. The case appears to be somewhat simple: A woman is found dead in Central Park, and digging into her life reveals she was raped years earlier—by the same man who was seen in the area. However, that man is Scott Kelton (Rob Benedict), the 13th richest man alive. Prior to his arrest, he says he heard someone scream but didn’t see anything, called 9-1-1, and pointed Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) and Riley (Reid Scott) in the direction of a vendor, who was previously convicted of felony ...

[This story contains spoilers from the Feb. 22, 2024 episode of Law & Order, “Last Dance.”]
Jack McCoy left the world of Law & Order the way he came into it — in a courtroom.
Sam Waterston said goodbye to the long-running NBC franchise in Thursday’s episode, ending his 19-season, 405-episode run as prosecutor-turned-New York County District Attorney Jack McCoy. Waterston’s final episode saw Jack returning to the courtroom to finish trying a murder case in which the defendant is a billionaire with close ties to New York’s mayor.

Law & Order is saying goodbye to Sam Waterston in just a couple of short weeks — his final episode as Jack McCoy airs February 22 — and while we don’t know much, we do know we’re going to miss him. NBC aired a promo for the episode titled “Last Dance,” and it’s all about McCoy over the years. “As District Attorney, I’ve tried to act fairly and ethically,” he says. “It’s been a hell of a ride.” It’s worth watching, so check it out above. The news broke of Waterston’s impending exit on February 2. “Greetings, you wonderful people. It’s a pleasure to talk directly like this to the backbone of Law & Order’s absolutely amazing audience. What? We can't believe Sam Waterson's leaving Law & Order.
There have been many cast changes, but Jack McCoy has been a fixture since the 1990s.
But sometimes, a character has gone as far as he can. McCoy may be ready to retire, which offers an opportunity to breathe new life into the oldest member of the Law & Order franchise.
McCoy is an old-school district attorney -- the kind of man the younger characters look to as a mentor. This is how Law & Order district attorneys tend to be; when he was young, he reported to Adam Schiff, who had many years of experience.

That doesn't...

An era is truly coming to an end. It's hard to imagine the flagship "Law & Order" series, which inspired numerous spin-offs and has run for an incredible 23 seasons, without star Sam Waterston. The actor has played Manhattan District Attorney Jack McCoy since 1994 and has been a major part of "Law & Order" for 19 of those 23 seasons, so his departure is major news. The series ended in 2010 but was reprised in 2022, with Waterston helping audiences who watched more than a decade earlier feel like they were firmly in the old show.
The news comes via The Hollywood Reporter, who also reports that actor Tony Goldwyn (Gordon Gray in "Oppenheimer") will join the series as the new Da after Waterston leaves. Waterston's final episode will air on February 22 on NBC, marking the end of an impressive more than 400-episode run. The series reprisal has gotten mixed reviews from critics (you can read...
