David’s Quick Take for the tl;dr Media Consumer:
Mr. Freedom begins with a wail of sirens as Chicago cops swarm in to crack the skulls of rioters and looters. It ends with a catastrophic explosion that levels a city block in Paris and mutilates the body of the movie’s titular hero. In between all that, against a backdrop of Cold War intrigue and superpower paranoia run amok, we see scenes involving overt racist mockery, rape as a spectator sport, sacrilege, poisoning, prostitution, assassination, the sexist degradation of women and a pervasive attitude of unmitigated cynicism and ridicule toward the aspirations of the USA as a bulwark of liberty, democracy and decency against the forces of tyranny and oppression around the world. All the necessary ingredients for a robust satirical take-down of good old fashioned patriotism, American-style! The politics are radical, the humor is often guttural, and the...

David’s Quick Take for the tl;dr Media Consumer:
A brash, vulgar, wildly energetic and shamelessly provocative comedy romp that launched Mel Brooks as a film director, Gene Wilder as a popular comic actor, and grossly expanded the latitude extended to comedians in cinema, establishing radically poor taste as an acceptable marketing strategy in mainstream entertainment. Though The Producers is fondly remembered, massively influential and boasts some truly unforgettable sequences of inspired lunacy, too much time is dedicated to histrionic leering, shouting and shrieking episodes that don’t deliver enough in terms of wit to earn my enthusiastic endorsement overall. The story line is pretty familiar – a rambunctious Broadway showman conspires with a neurotic accountant to bilk investors in an offensive production, only to see their plan foiled when the play becomes an unexpected hit. The premise is clever and offers a broad platform for unbridled zaniness. A lot...

This time on the podcast, Scott is joined by David Blakeslee and James McCormick to discuss Vilgot Sjöman’s I Am Curious (Yellow) and I Am Curious (Blue).
About the film:
Seized by customs upon entry to the United States, subject of a heated court battle, banned in cities across the United States, Vilgot Sjöman’s I Am Curious—Yellow is one of the most controversial films of all time. This landmark document of Swedish society during the sexual revolution has been declared both obscene and revolutionary. It tells the story of Lena (Lena Nyman), a searching and rebellious young woman, and her personal quest to understand the social and political conditions in 1960s Sweden, as well as her bold exploration of her own sexual identity. Shattering taboos as it freely traverses the lines between fact and fiction, I Am Curious—Yellow is presented here for the first time with...

David’s Quick Take for the tl;dr Media Consumer:
Both of Vilgot Sjöman’s I Am Curious films are far too often unjustly overlooked and appear to have been saddled with harsher reputations than either of them deserve. (Yellow) probably suffered a serious backlash due to its extraordinary popularity after it was censored and brought before the United States Supreme Court as obscene and therefore prohibited material, even though it doesn’t begin to approach anything we’d consider pornographic by contemporary standards. (Blue) was likewise dismissed and overlooked by the same crowds who were underwhelmed by (Yellow), expecting to see something that Sjöman never intended. Together, the two films are really just a combined, extended 3 1/2 hour anthology of Swedish culture and politics of the late 1960s as seen through the eyes of the director Sjöman and his young protege/lover/antagonist Lena Nyman, roughly half his age and...

The Godfather of Sound on Sight, Ricky D., and I were recently conversing through email when he broached the topic of me writing an article about the ten best film related podcasts. For those who don’t know me very well I am a big fan of the medium of podcasting when it comes to film. I love good discussion about the world of film, as well as interesting insight about the art form that I am so endeared with. A couple of years ago I began a trek, on my blog, through every single film related podcast I could find. The goal was to experience as much film discussion as I could and to separate the wheat from the chaff. The trek is still ongoing, but at this point I feel like I have a decent handle on what the very best film related podcasts are out of the ones I have listened to.

Two British men have avoided prison sentences after admitting they hacked into Sony Music's servers and stole music tracks, including previously-unreleased material by Michael Jackson. The Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca) said that James Marks, 27, and James McCormick, 26, breached Sony's servers in the Us and downloaded thousands of tacks. Alongside songs by the late Jackson, the hackers also downloaded music by artists including Jls, Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears. In total, they downloaded around 7,000 files, either completed tracks or their component parts, along with artwork and videos, according to Soca. Marks and McCormick were arrested in May 2011, and Soca identified from chat logs on their computers that they intended to sell or trade some of the files. After pleading guilty to computer misuse offences at a hearing in September (more)...

London — A British court sentenced two hackers to 100 hours of community service on Friday for stealing a treasure trove of unreleased music – including Michael Jackson tracks – from the U.S. servers of Sony Music Entertainment.
Officials said that music aficionados James Marks, 27, and James McCormick, 26, used their home computers to access Sony's servers and scour them for Jackson-related material. The pair downloaded nearly 8,000 files, including completed or partial tracks, artwork, and videos relating to Jackson and other unspecified Sony artists.
The precise nature of the unreleased material hasn't been made clear – Sony refused to comment on the case. A statement from Britain's Serious and Organized Crime Agency identified some of the material as stems, which are audio tracks that can be used in mixes and overdubs.
Marks and McCormick _who met online – were arrested in May 2011 after Sony alerted U.K. law enforcement to the breach. Chat logs recovered from...

London — Two men have been charged in Britain with hacking into Sony Music's computers and stealing music, the company and British police said Monday. A person familiar with the situation said the hackers had obtained unreleased Michael Jackson tracks.
Sony Music Entertainment spokeswoman Liz Young said the company noticed a breach of its systems in May, "and immediately took steps to secure the site and notify authorities. As a result, the two suspects were arrested."
She said no customer data were compromised in the attack on the company's internal music-sharing system.
Sony would not confirm how much music was stolen or what artists were involved. But a person familiar with the situation, who was not authorized to speak publicly, said Monday that the suspects were Jackson fans and had taken his music, including unreleased material.

You know they're bad, they're bad, you know it! Two British men have been arrested in the U.K. over charges that they hacked into Sony Music's archive and illegally downloaded thousands of songs—many of them comprising Sony's prized catalog of Michael Jackson music. Per the BBC, James Marks, 26, and James McCormick, 25, were busted last May and are scheduled to stand trial next January. Sony confirms the hacking, but would not disclose the number of tracks that were stolen. Reports, however, peg that number to be over 50,000, and sources indicate that Jackson's entire catalog of music may have been compromised. That's one mighty expensive catalog: In 2010, Sony signed...

This is the podcast dedicated to The Criterion Collection. Ryan Gallagher, James McCormick & Travis George discuss Criterion Collection news & rumors and new releases. They also discuss Criterion #425 Hiroshi Teshigahara’s 1984 film, Antonio Gaudi.
Catalan architect Antonio Gaudí (1852–1926) designed some of the world’s most astonishing buildings, interiors, and parks; Japanese director Hiroshi Teshigahara constructed some of the most aesthetically audacious films ever made. Here their artistry melds in a unique, enthralling cinematic experience. Less a documentary than a visual poem, Teshigahara’s Antonio Gaudí takes viewers on a tour of Gaudí’s truly spectacular architecture, including his massive, still-unfinished masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona. With camera work as bold and sensual as the curves of his subject’s organic structures, Teshigahara immortalizes Gaudí on film.

This is the podcast dedicated to The Criterion Collection. Ryan Gallagher and James McCormick are joined by Melissa Molina from Latino Review to discuss Criterion Collection news & rumors and new releases. They also discuss Criterion # 356, Jane Campion’s 1989 film, Sweetie.
Though she went on to create a string of brilliant films, Jane Campion will always be remembered for her stunning debut feature, Sweetie, which focuses on the hazardous relationship between the buttoned-down, superstitious Kay and her rampaging, devil-may-care sister, Sweetie—and on their family’s profoundly rotten roots. A feast of colorful photography and captivating, idiosyncratic characters, the tough and tender Sweetie heralded the emergence of this gifted director, as well as a renaissance of Australian cinema, which would take the film world by storm in the nineties.

It’s been about a month since my last look at what has been going on in the world of Criterion Collection blogs, and I thought it’d be appropriate to finally just change the column to be “this month in…” instead of “this week in…” As most of you know, this past month has seen the birth of my daughter, which has led to a steady decrease in my output of blog posts, but a dramatic increase in my posting of adorable pictures. So if you were following my test last week to release the Disc 2 before the main episode, you’ll notice that this week I quickly reverted to our old way of doing things. I just found that putting out a Disc 2 before the Disc 1 caused a minor tear in the space time continuum, and I can’t have that on my conscience again. This week we continue our preview of this week’s new DVD and Blu-ray releases, including things like Tron, Taxi Driver, and Batman Beyond The Return Of The Joker, as well as a look at what else has been on our screens.
Disc 2 episodes are bonus/supplement episodes of The CriterionCast. In Episode 74 of the CriterionCast, Ryan Gallagher and James McCormick are joined by Moises Chiullan (from Badass Digest), as well as their old co-host, Travis George, to discuss Jean-Pierre Melville’s 1967 film, Le Samourai.
In a career-defining performance, Alain Delon plays a contract killer with samurai instincts. A razor-sharp cocktail of 1940s American gangster cinema and 1960s French pop culture—with a liberal dose of Japanese lone-warrior mythology—maverick director Jean-Pierre Melville’s masterpiece Le Samouraï defines cool.

CriterionCast – Episode 74.5 – Disc 2 – Off The Shelf And On The Screen With Ryan, James, And Travis
With this episode, I’m trying out a new method of releasing our Disc 2 episodes. To coincide with “new release Tuesdays,” we’ll be including a new segment in our Disc 2′s: Off The Shelf. This will be a rundown of the week’s new releases on DVD and Blu-ray. In it we’ll highlight those releases that we find particularly interesting, pointing out those that you should avoid, and those that demand your hard earned dollars.
I’m also trying out something new in that I’m releasing the Disc 2 before I’m releasing our main discussion on Le Samourai. I still haven’t decided on whether this is how we’ll do this going forward, but I wanted to try it out. My thinking is that the Disc 2 will coincide with the new releases of the week, and the main episode will go up a few days later,...
