Obi-Wan Spin-off Movie: Last week we heard that Stephen Daldry was in early talks to direct a Star Wars spin-off movie revolving around Obi-Wan Kenobi, the character previously played by Ewan McGregor and Alec Guinness. Now a new report claims that the working title is Joshua Tree, a desert plant that may reference the desert planet Tatooine, where the character was first seen in Star Wars: A New Hope (above). It may also suggest that Tatooine will again serve as an important location for the action. [Omega Underground] The Equalizer 2: Ashton Sanders (Moonlight, above) will star in The Equalizer 2. It's described as a lead role; Denzel Washington will reprise his character, Robert McCall, who will serve as a father figure to Sanders' character. Melissa Leo...

Today in casting news, we have an equal opportunity gig for actors on both coasts! “The Equalizer 2,” a follow-up to the first “Equalizer” film which hit theaters back in 2014 and starred Denzel Washington and Chloë Grace Moretz, is coming—and it’s casting. Betty Mae is handling casting in Los Angeles for the action-thriller, while Chrystie Street Casting is heading up duties on the opposite coast in New York. Washington is signed on to reprise his role as the hardened Robert McCall when the feature begins shooting this September. Antoine Fuqua ("Training Day") will also return to his post as director. Apart from Washington, no further casting is known at this time. The original film made more than $190 million worldwide. For more gigs, check out Backstage's casting calls, which you can filter by location!

While 2014’s The Equalizer was by no means an amazing piece of cinema, it was a violent tour-de-force of directing that more than managed to please action moviegoers. Star Denzel Washington was very much at home in the skin of Robert McCall, a retired black ops agent with violent tendencies, and helmer Antoine Fuqua skillfully found a balance between minimal story and hard-hitting action. Not many would’ve thought this was the film that would break Denzel Washington’s streak of never doing a sequel, but last year, it was confirmed that Washington would return for an Equalizer 2.
Not much has been said since then. Both Fuqua and Washington have been too hard at work on their latest collaboration, The Magnificent Seven, to say much, but now, thanks a report from Collider, we now have a bit more information on the sequel. While at a Q & A session with Equalizer 2 producer Todd Black,...

Coming off the back of The Magnificent Seven, Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua are set to go their separate ways, with the former lining up Oscar hopeful Fences and Inner City. Fuqua, meanwhile, will soon be busy lensing The Man Who Made It Snow and upcoming documentary, American Dream American Knightmare.
How and ever, those hoping for a Magnificent Seven reunion anytime soon will be disappointed to learn that The Equalizer 2, previously penciled in for release on September 29, 2017, will now begin filming next September.
At least, that’s according to producer Todd Black (via Collider), who revealed during a recent Q&A session that while the script is done, stacked schedules mean that the action sequel won’t be prepped for production until late next year.

Matthew Pearl’s historical novel The Technologists has taken one mighty step toward the silver screen today, now that The Hollywood Reporter has revealed Alex Siskin – producer behind Sony’s hardboiled thriller The Equalizer – has nabbed film rights to Pearl’s original work.
First published four years ago, The Technologists is billed as an historical thriller, one centering on the inaugural MIT class circa 1868. Attached to pen the adaptation himself, Pearl’s adventure takes place “after an unnatural disaster strikes the ships in Boston Harbor, and an equally inexplicable catastrophe devastates the heart of the city, sparking an anti-science backlash that casts a pall over MIT and threatens its very survival. The best and brightest from the college’s first graduating class secretly join forces to save innocent lives and track down the truth.”

It seems as though everywhere you look actors are doing sequels. Even Dame Helen Mirren has done her share! (Did anyone catch “Red 2”?) But somehow, a few of Hollywood’s brightest have managed to avoid the sequel. Though some second films can be incredible and downright entertaining, here are just six actors who’ve never done two of the same! Leonardo DICAPRIODid you see “Inception 2” or “Shutter Island: Back at Shore”? Ok, those are totally made up, but you’re not the only one who would have loved DiCaprio revisiting some of his iconic characters. In a recent interview with Variety, “The Revenant” star said, “To me, every movie I’ve done has been its own piece of individual art. You read a script—it’s got a beginning and an end. It’s hard to envision that being resurrected again.” Denzel WashingtonEmbrace Washington on this list while you can!

It was teased ever since the first movie did unbelievably well in test screenings, but now it’s official. Denzel Washington will be strapping on the boots of waging vigalante Robert McCall yet again for more ultra violent dispensing of justice with The Equalizer 2, set to come our way 29th of September 2017, almost three years to the day after the first film opened. At the moment, Washington is the only returning name, and it’s unknown if original director Antoine Fuqua, currently reteaming with Washington for The Magnificent Seven remake, will return. I for one hope he does, because, while there are many directors who can handle ultra violent thrillers like this (Matthew Vaughn for one), I don’t think they’d be able to do it with the same flair and style as Fuqua.

For the first time in his versatile career, Denzel Washington will be toplining a franchise – the actor is signed on to reprise the role of former CIA agent Robert McCall in The Equalizer 2, which Sony has just set for release on September 29, 2017.
Little is known about the follow-up to last September’s sleeper hit, which had Sony’s highest-rated test screening for an R-rated movie before going on to earn almost $200 million against a budget of $55 million. Those are definitely franchise numbers, so it’s no surprise to have official confirmation of a date for the sequel (which we can all dream will simply be called The Sequalizer).
Antoine Fuqua, one of Hollywood’s most in-demand action helmers who made Training Day with Washington and most recently shot boxing drama Southpaw with an Oscar-tipped Jake Gyllenhaal, directed the first installment and he’s believed to be contracted for the follow-up.

Washington is thought to be returning for the follow-up (his first sequel), but no director or additional cast has yet been confirmed. Washington is will shortly re-team with Fuqua on "The Magnificent Seven" remake.

Long before it pummelled its way onto the silver screen, Sony Pictures ensured its ducks were in a row for The Equalizer. With genre stalwart Denzel Washington on board as the titular vigilante (real name Robert McCall) not to mention Training Day‘s Antoine Fuqua behind the lens, the studio served up a thriller that was as entertaining as it was efficient, checking all the right boxes for an action flick and bringing in an impressive box office haul to the tune of $192 million.
Generic though it may have been, Sony’s adaptation proved to be relatively successful, and now the company is pushing ahead with The Equalizer 2, a direct follow-up to last year’s actioner. That’s according to Collider, who report that the studio has every intention of massaging the property into a franchise with Washington at the helm.

Are you ready for some more equalizingc Are you surec I don't think you are. Well, you better get ready because more equalizing will happen. After making $192 million worldwide on a $55 million budget, THR reports Sony has decided to move forward with a sequel to last year's action thriller The Equalizer by Antoine Fuqua. This feels like the kind of movie that would have made a boatload on home video, so I guess a sequel makes sense. Denzel Washington is expected to return for the sequel, because who else can equalize the way Denzel equalizesc No one. Not even Edward Woodward, who originally played the titular Equalizer, Robert McCall, in the 1980s television series. The film also starred Chloe Grace Moretz, but there is no word about her on this sequel. Full disclosure: I haven't seen The Equalizer, despite hearing okay things about it and the want to see Denzel equalize.

Sony Pictures has been busy at CinemaCon this week unveiling its slate of upcoming films, and we now know a sequel for The Equalizer is among them.
The studio company didn't elaborate on the project, but a follow-up comes as no surprise after the first earned $192 million worldwide at the box office last year.
Denzel Washington is expected to return for The Equalizer 2 as vigilante Robert McCall, who single-handedly took on a bunch of violent Russian mobsters last time round.
Marton Csokas played the boss of the group and main antagonist Teddy, while Chloë Grace Moretz also starred as teen victim Teri.
The Equalizer is based on a TV series, which originally aired on CBS between 1985 and 1989.
Also among Sony's big announcements was news of a new animated Spider-Man movie, due out in 2018.

Sony has officially announced plans to move forward with a sequel to the Denzel Washington R-rated action thriller "The Equalizer".
Though rumored months ago, it was the $192 million global box office totals and strong home entertainment sales that ultimately has seen the project being greenlit.
Washington is expected to reprise his role as Robert McCall in the follow up, a project which would mark the actor's first sequel.
Antoine Fuqua directed the first film, but it's unknown whether he'll return for the sequel. He and Washington will shortly re-team on MGM's "Magnificent Seven" remake.

★★★☆☆ Despite The Equalizer (2014) reuniting director Antoine Fuqua and star Denzel Washington, Richard Wenk's lacklustre script - based on the 80s TV show - prompts little more than a disappointingly predictable display of bloodthirsty wrath and vengeance. In a disservice to the actor's gift for psychological complexity, Washington's usual wit and charisma are hidden beneath a wooden mask of vacuous discipline. When he isn't at his drab sales associate job, former black-op Robert McCall (Washington) geometrically arranges spoons at a Edward Hopperish diner. His only relief from loneliness a brief exchange over Old Man and the Sea with Teri (Chloe Grace Moretz).

The Equalizer – a movie that desperately tries to spin Denzel Washington’s role as something wholly new and inventive, yet anyone familiar with one of Hollywood’s most established talents will know exactly the kind of performance Washington brings to Robert McCall. In what could essentially be a prequel to Man On Fire, director Antoine Fuqua creates a “different kind of superhero” by remaking a 1980s television series that originally starred Edward Woodward, finding a hero who lets his actions speak louder than words ever could. Denzel is a tight-lipped badass who knows his way around a home improvement store, but The Equalizer sets out to be something more than another action-centric thriller – an achievement that borders success long enough to hold our attention.
While updating the episodic source material, Fuqua does ensure that a subtle 80s vibe is kept in the sense of McCall’s Terminator-esque attitude. Denzel goes...

The Equalizer was an espionage television series that aired for four seasons on CBS from fall 1985 to spring 1989. It starred the late English actor Edward Woodward as Robert McCall, a middle-aged retired intelligence officer with a mysterious past who used his skills to help people who were in trouble. The show took elements from popular spy films and private investigator shows and mixed them with gritty realism and violence. Now there’s a new feature film version of The Equalizer, starring Denzel Washington as McCall and helmed by Antoine Fuqua, who directed Washington to his Best Actor Oscar for Training Day (2001). But despite the talent involved, The Equalizer ultimately never rises above being a solid but standard action thriller.

'Gone Girl' is the one to top this fall movie season.
Gone Girl is getting a lot of buzz, and the hype is working.
In its opening weekend, the film starring Ben Affleck generated an impressive $38 million. Based on the novel by Gillian Flynn, the psychological thriller is about a man whose wife goes missing on their fifth anniversary, and he is turned into a possible murder suspect. There's a lot of talk about a full frontal Affleck scene, and the reviews on director David Fincher's thriller are mixed.
News: 'Gone Girl': Worthy or Worthless? The Reviews Are In!
Thirty eight million was the number to beat this weekend, and AnnaBelle narrowly missed that amount. With $37.2 million, the Conjuring spinoff is scaring audiences with an evil doll. The story is about a couple experiencing terrifying supernatural occurrences involving a vintage doll shortly after their home is invaded by satanic cultists.

It was a good run, Liam Neeson. The 62-year-old who was Oskar Schindler and Alfred Kinsey spent the last seven years kicking the crap out of much younger bad guys in bone-crushing B-movies, best epitomized by the Taken films. But as of this past weekend, there's a new sheriff in town. Two-time Oscar winner Denzel Washington, one of the biggest movie stars of the past 25 years, and almost always, the coolest guy in the room, delivered his 12th No. 1 film, The Equalizer. Directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day), The Equalizer is a Neeson-ized adaptation of the 1980s CBS detective drama series that starred Edward Woodward.

Denzel Washington killed the competition and the bad guys this weekend with his action thriller “The Equalizer,” and he did it without a car, a sidekick or a gun. Washington plays Robert McCall, an ex-special forces op living under a new identity in the crime drama directed by Antoine Fuqua. The film, which reunited the Oscar-winning actor with his ”Training Day” director, opened at No. 1 with an explosive $35 million debut — propelled by a huge body count and a series of over-the-top scenes. Update, Monday, 1:44 Pm: The Equalizer came in beneath Sony’s estimates, bringing in $34.1 million for the three-day weekend, easily running over the other newcomer, the animated The Boxtrolls. However, the Denzel Washington film is likely to get side-swiped next weekend by the David Fincher-directed mystery thriller Gone Girl, which is already tracking well for an expected big weekend haul for Fox. Based on the best-selling book by Gillian Flynn, the Ben Affleck-starrer may end up cannibalizing the audience away from Denzel. Gone Girl opens in 50 markets around the world next weekend, too, giving it the first wide international rollout of the fall.
Meanwhile, Focus Features’ The Boxtrolls ended up with a $17.2M take as the first animated fare since June to grace theaters. It gets another weekend before Disney drops Alexander And The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day on October 10. Heck of a title and...

Denzel Washington has never done a sequel. That has to be extremely rare for an actor of his caliber, especially one who does his share of popular action movies. But the projects he chooses, even those of a genre prone to franchises, tend not to lend themselves to sequels. Maybe there could be an Unstoppable 2 or a Deja Vu All Over Again or another tale involving one of his many detective characters, but there’s apparently been no interest. Inside Man was supposed to spawn a follow-up, but that was canceled. Now we’re about to find out if Washington’s latest hit, The Equalizer, will give him his first movie series. The Equalizer 2 has actually been in development for a while, but so far the actor hasn’t signed on. The sequel likely won’t go forward without him, so let’s just assume he will be on board in order to imagine what’s next...

Denzel Washington won his 2001 Oscar the hard way. He became only the second black lead actor to win the award not in a biopic or a war movie but in “Training Day,” an action thriller and one of the least Academy-friendly genres. On top of that, he also played a monstrously corrupt cop. Villains rarely are bestowed with leading-man gold unless they are as deliciously charming as Hannibal Lecter. Yet he was victorious. Why? Because in Denzel we trust. He is truly one of the last real Hollywood stars left standing that moviegoers will go see in almost anything. And even when he is bad, he is oh so good. Little wonder then that Washington’s cool-headed portrait of aging tough guy Robert McCall in “The Equalizer,” which opened this past weekend to a resounding $35 million, puts to shame Liam Neeson’s outlandish antics in the “Taken” films and Sylvester Stallone...

Denzel Washington is back and so are the 80s with the release of "The Equalizer," the TV series upon which this is loosely based. That series aired from 1985 to 1989. But that’s not the reason for my associating this film with the 80s. It’s because Denzel Washington’s Robert McCall is the second coming of the archetypal 80′s action hero while the villains are straight out of the "Lethal Weapon" and "Death Wish" franchises. Washington’s Robert McCall lives like an obsessive-compulsive monk. The first shot of the film is a relatively long tracking shot through McCall’s banal and mundane apartment, setting up his banal and mundane life. Everything is measured by...

In the mid to late 80s Edward Woodward was The Equalizer. His character, Robert McCall, brought a grin to audience's faces by wiping the grin off the faces of particularly egregious and dangerous criminals in particularly painful and fitting ways. Critics were lukewarm about the new film revival of the character as played by Denzel Washington, but audiences were interested enough to give it a decent number one opening. At $35 million The Equalizer is one of the larger in recent history for Washington and the largest ever for director Antoine Fuqua. It also puts the movie in decent range to break even given its $55 million production budget. The Box Trolls received a less enthusiastic welcome, banking just $17 million for a third place debut. It's the end of the month, and 'The Equalizer' set the bar high for new releases.
With an incredible opening box office weekend, The Equalizer beats out every movie this weekend with $35 million in ticket sales. The thriller stars Denzel Washington and Chloe Moretz. Washington plays a former government agent named Robert McCall who tries to live a simple life in retirement, but then he meets Chloe Grace Moretz, a young prostitute who seeks McCall's help when she gets in trouble with the Russian mob.
According to The Wrap, this movie already has a sequel in the works. In overall opening weekend amounts for the month of September, this movie comes in at fourth and is one to watch.

Columbia Pictures (Sony) released their new action flick, "The Equalizer" into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out and thought it was way better than I originally thought it would be. It featured great action scenes, cool plotline, and lots of suspense. It stars: Denzel Washington, Marton Csokas, Chloë Grace Moretz, David Harbour, Bill Pullman, and Melissa Leo. In the new flick, character Robert McCall (Denzel Washington) is a middle aged, retired intelligent officer who believes he's put his Special Forces past behind him and dedicated himself to beginning a new, quiet life. However, he ends up meeting a hooker named Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), who is just a young girl that's been under the control of a violent Russian gangster. And when she comes up nearly beaten to death, Robert just can’t stand idly by and do nothing. So, from this point, we see Robert taking out...

Denzel Washington reunites with his Training Day director, Antoine Fuqua, for another film of explosions, quick wit, and Mexican standoffs. This time, it’s The Equalizer with Chloë Grace Moretz. (You can get your Ethan Hawke fix later this year with Predestination or Good Kill.)
The Equalizer revisits the 1980s television series of the same name with Washington in the role vacated by the lateEdward Woodward. At first glance, the role of a mild-mannered home improvement store clerk doesn’t seem all that suited for Washington, but it’s soon revealed that Robert McCall is a former CIA agent with a whole slew of murder-related skills. Cue Denzel slowly walking down a home hardware aisle, looking for a sledgehammer and – of course – vengeance!
We love Denzel Washington, and we’re pretty sure you do too, but why exactly? It’s got to be more than just his high-wattage smile.

When it comes to the current trend of old t.v. shows being remade for the big screen, they usually fall in to two catergories: meta comedies (21 Jump Street) or gritty actioners (The Sweeny). The Equalizer definitely falls into the latter camp. An ultra-violent take on the 80's series, with Denzel Washington replacing Edward Woodward as ex-special forces operative Robert McCall, who comes out of his self imposed retirement to help those who can't help themselves. Director Antoine Fuqua (who previously guided Washington to an Oscar with Training Day) certainly has a handle on the material, and takes his time with the set up. The first act is a fantastic slow burn as we get to know the tortured McCall, who spends his days helping his co-workers at a hard ware super store, while his nights are spent at a local diner, sleep denied to him. Washington is effective as ever in this role.

Now that you've seen it, what did you think? "Got to be who you are in this world, no matter what." In theaters everywhere is The Equalizer, directed by Antoine Fuqua (of Training Day, Tears of the Sun, Brooklyn's Finest, Olympus Has Fallen), starring Oscar winner Denzel Washington as Robert McCall, a mysterious vigilante who takes on the Russian mob (and anyone who messes with him). The cast includes Chloe Moretz, Marton Csokas, Haley Bennett, Bill Pullman and Melissa Leo. Is it any good? Does it live up to the TV show it's based on? If you've seen it, leave a comment with thoughts on The Equalizer. Spoiler Warning: We strongly urge everyone to actually see the film before reading ahead, as there may be spoilers below. We also encourage all commenters to keep major spoilers from the film to a minimum, if possible. However, this is an open discussion from this point on!

My first question about The Equalizer after seeing the trailer was, “Why even bother calling it The Equalizer?”
After all, it’s not as if The Equalizer—a 1980s CBS detective drama starring Edward Woodward as a Good Samaritan retired intelligence agent—was a brand that still lured audiences. Antoine Fuqua’s violent action movie with Denzel Washington exists in an entirely different universe, the brutal and vengeful cinematic neighborhood of Charles Bronson, Liam Neeson, and Washington himself. Call it The Equalizer or call it Man on Fire 2—this is a Denzel action film, first and last.

There’s a special kind of hell for artists who array vigilante revenge-porn in saintly garb, and Denzel Washington and director Antoine Fuqua should go to the front of that damnable line after The Equalizer. Washington plays Robert McCall (as in, “Who ya’ gonna McCall?”), a gentle, paternalistic, self-effacing low-level manager at a Home Depot–like hardware store. He lives in an unadorned apartment and eats by his lonesome every night at the same diner, where he reads the latest in a line of good-mental-hygiene classics of the Western canon. (The aging widower is working on Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea.) He makes small talk with the regulars, among them Chloë Grace Moretz as Teri, a Russian-born hooker with dreams of being a singer-songwriter. When Teri starts showing up with shiners — and worse — McCall is quietly stricken. He knows the world is full of very bad men,...

The Equalizer, out on Friday, updates the television series of the same name, which starred Edward Woodward and ran to 88 episodes across four seasons between 1985-89. Antoine Fuqua's big-screen adaptation has his Training Day star Denzel Washington playing Robert McCall, a former intelligence op who takes an interest in a bedraggled teenaged prostitute (Chloe Grace Moretz) hauled off by a pissed-off Russian pimp. Sony, which is releasing the $55 million action thriller in more than 3,200 theaters, suggests a launch between $25 million and $30 million (though others predict it will soar past $30 million) Nevertheless,

The fact The Equalizer is an adaptation of a 1980s television series is meaningless to me. My only familiarity with the show is watching Rob Reiner in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street, piss and moan after a phone call causes him to miss a portion of an episode. That said, it seems a working knowledge of the show would be of little use, that is unless there was more to the series than themes ridiculously ripped from classic literature and a trail of dead bodies left in the wake of a one man wrecking crew as he doles out his own brand of justice in a film that's not exactly good, not exactly bad, a little too long and violently fun. How's that for a mixed bag of descriptorsc What's best about The Equalizer is the fact Denzel Washington still makes movies like this. Denzel is a...

If you liked Law Abiding Citizen, you should go ballistic for this graphic Equalizer. Denzel Washington steps into Edward Woodward's formidable shoes in a big budget overhaul of the 80s TV favourite. He and Training Day director Antoine Fuqua deliver a rampage of Old Testament justice that sees Washington's spook/Diy warehouseman Robert McCall declaring war on the evil Russian mobsters who threaten the nice folk of his sleepy Boston suburb.

While Denzel Washington shares the same name as Edward Woodward’s character from The Equalizer television show, that’s exactly where the similarities end. The word equalizer isn’t even mentioned except for the credits. Further establishing differences between the two McCalls are the digs they occupy. Rather than roll around in a flashy Jaguar, Washington’s McCall takes public transportation and spends his days in anonymity working for Home Depot. He comes home to a fairly bare apartment in a lower-class corner of Boston. Nights when Robert can’t sleep he reads Cervantes in diners. This life is simple and it’s what he promised someone he loved.

After receiving joking acknowledgment in The Wolf of Wall Street last year, awareness of ‘80s TV series The Equalizer is probably now as high as it was ever going to be. It’s hard to imagine any fans of the series clamouring for a film version more than two decades later, and even harder to say whether they’ll approve of Antoine Fuqua’s adaptation, which carries over the names of the series, but little else. A one-man A-Team,the titular Equalizer is Robert McCall, an ex-covert operative with a particular set of skills he uses to atone for a shady past, one hard-luck case at a time.
