When it comes to their original television, Netflix is killing it. Whether it’s House of Cards or BoJack Horseman, the streaming site has continued to provide astounding, award-winning television on a near monthly basis. If only their original movies stood as high. While they’ve acquired some noteworthy features, including Beasts of No Nation and The Little Prince, the films they’ve produced themselves from the ground-up continuously fail to live up to their impeccable television standards. While it’s encouraging to see them venture into the sci-fi genre with Spectral, unfortunately, it doesn’t fare much better as it’s yet another rousing disappointment for the multi-platform company.

The film follows an elite military unit that goes on a mission in a war-ravaged European city and is greeted by ghostlike entities that seem immune to their puny human weapons. One imagines that this will necessitate a great deal of derring-do on the part of said soldiers, who are led by the likes of James Badge Dale, Max Martini, Emily Mortimer and Bruce Greenwood.

How do you stop an enemy you can’t see coming? That’s the basis behind Spectral, Netflix’s original sci-fi feature, which got its first official trailer today.
Once set to be a summer tentpole release under Universal, Netflix took over the reigns. Not known for their extensive marketing campaigns, this first look at their expensive new sci-fi project comes a mere week before it hits the streaming site. It finds James Badge Dale, Emily Mortimer and Bruce Greenwood as a special-ops team fighting a race of supernatural aliens attacking the world. While the trailer doesn’t give away a lot in terms of plot, it does showcase a great deal in terms of scope, proving that Netflix is willing to pay top dollar to provide high-grade cinema to their audience. Here’s hoping Spectral‘s story is given as much care as its high-quality special effects were.

Netflix has just released the trailer for their original sci-fi action film Spectral and this flick looks freakin' rad! The film is set in the future of a war-torn European city, and it follows a team of soldiers who come together to defend the city from an otherworldly ghostly-type alien force. The movie definitely looks like it will be a blast to watch.
There are some super cool visuals in the film, and I really like the concept for it, especially the otherworld force that the army is trying to fight. It looks better than many of the big-budget movies that are being released in theaters.

Once set to be a wide release this past summer from Universal, they handed over the supernatural war film Spectral to Netflix, who will drop it next week. Not one for extensive marketing campaigns, the company has now released the first trailer for the film which follows a group of soldiers who are defending a city from an otherworldly force.
While its different elements look familiar, seeing sci-fi mashed up with a Black Hawk Down-esque scenario may prove to be entertaining. Add in the talents of James Badge Dale, Emily Mortimer, and Bruce Greenwood, and maybe this can be a respite from the fairly lackluster year of action cinema.
Directing by Nic Mathieu and also starring Max Martini, Clayne Crawford, Cory Hardict, Louis Ozawa Changchien, Jimmy Akingbola, Dylan Smith, Philip Bulcock, Royce Pierreson, Ursula Parker, and Mark O’Neal, check out the trailer below ahead of next week’s release.

"There's no limit to how far they can spread..." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for the sci-fi action-thriller titled Spectral, described as "Ghostbusters meets Black Hawk Down." The plot is about a scientist who joins a Delta Forces unit that goes into a European city to investigate "mysterious phantom aggressors code-named Spectral". The cast includes Max Martini, Clayne Crawford, James Badge Dale, Emily Mortimer and Bruce Greenwood. To top it off, this film has a score by Junkie Xl, weapons made by Weta Workshop, and VFX by Weta Digital. It seems odd that this is being dumped straight to Netflix, but even better because it means we all get to see it starting next week. This looks cool, I want to check it out. Anyone wishing for a more grounded approach to ghosbusting may be interested in Spectral, Nic Mathieu's debut feature, which is being touted as "Black Hawk Down meets Ghostbusters". Produced by Legendary Pictures and Universal, the film was pulled from a theatrical run in favour of a worldwide Netflix release on December 9, 2016 according to Deadline. In the film, a brilliant scientist embarks on a deadly mission with a Special Ops team of Delta Force soldiers into a battle-scarred, war-torn city, where mysterious phantom aggressors code-named "Spectral" have been causing inexplicable civilians deaths. Of course, this gritty approach reminds me of Battle: La, a film that I really dug in it's approach but also found somewhat lacking on a story level. Director courts controversy in France amid tax credit stand-off.
Luc Besson is threatening to shoot his ambitious sci-fi picture Valérian and the City of a Thousand Planets in Hungary rather than France if regulations governing French film credits are not tweaked to accommodate the production.
The ambitious $180m production is not eligible for a 20% tax credit for French films, due to the fact it will be in English and star a mainly non-French cast, and does not qualify for the Tax Rebate for International Production (Trip) either because it is a local production.
“I’m in a legal hole,” Besson said in an interview on a culture programme on French radio station Rtl this week.
“I’ve contacted the authorities because I’d really like to shoot the film in France. There is a tiny little problem: the tax credits.

The popular anime Robotech has been stuck in development since as far back as 2007 with Warner Bros. trying several iterations in order to get it off the ground, the last attempt being with commercial director Nic Mathieu in 2013. But now the property has switched studios as Sony Pictures has just announced the acquisition of the big screen rights to Robotech with "the intention of moving quickly toward production of a future global franchise." Surely that was what Warner Bros. had hoped for too, so let's not get to excited just yet, but the anime classic has a sprawling sci-fi world that would make for quite the cinematic spectacle. For those who don't know, Robotech is set at a time when Earth has developed giant robots based on the technology of an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Using this new technology, mankind must fight off three waves of alien invasions,...

Sony Pictures has secured the live-action film rights to the popular anime series "Robotech" which they plan to turn into a potential franchise.
The original 1985 show was actually a combination of three different Japanese television shows - footage from "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross," "Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross," and "Genesis Climber Mospeada" was cobbled together and redubbed to create an original 85-episode animated series that could be syndicated across U.S. markets.
As a result, a lot of rewriting and editing had to be done to stitch together three unrelated series to portray it as one cohesive storyline that spans three generations. To this day, the first season (based on the 'Macross' series) remains the most well-regarded.
Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton ("300," "Immortals") are producing and Michael Gordon ("300," "GI Joe") is writing the script. Various people have tried to adapt the series into a film over the past decade including Tobey Maguire,...

Get ready for another big screen adaptation of an 80s children's favorite. The Hollywood Gang, a Warner Bros-based production house, is moving full steam ahead on a film based on Robotech. The cartoon favorite is credited as being the start of the anime craze here in the states when it introduced kids to the exciting visual style and open-ended storytelling that is synonymous with the genre.
This isn't Robotech's first dance with Hollywood. The on-again/off-again relationship between the property and Tinseltown began back in 2007. The project has seen many suiters for roles behind and in front of the cameras- names like Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire have been linked to it. At one point, a director had even been tapped to shepherd the production. His name was Nic Mathieu and he was primarily known for directing commercials. But that fell apart, which brings us to today's news from Deadline.

The anime series Robotech may finally be heading to the movies - and not at the first attempt...
80s anime series Robotech has long been linked with a Hollywood film adaptation. Over the years there's certainly been no shortage of people linked with the project. That said, the last we heard of a possible feature though was back in 2013, when Nic Mathieu was apparently in talks to direct the film.
Back then, other people involved were Tobey Maguire, Akiva Goldsman, Joby Harold and Matthew Plouffe. But it seemed to come to nothing, and from what we can gleam, the assorted personnel have now moved on.
Moving forward to now, though, and there appears to have been progress on a Robotech movie.
New producers are attached to the project, with Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton now trying to shepherd Robotech to the big screen. And they've already hired Michael Gordon to pen a screenplay for them.

Writer-director Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler, which stars an emaciated Jake Gyllenhaal as a crime journalist, has been moved from October 17th to October 31st this year. Coming to us first is Nightcrawler, which is shaping up to be a must-see movie this fall. The shocking first trailer made quite an impression, and the tantalizing official synopsis below just raises our expectations:
An official selection of the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival, Nightcrawler is a pulse-pounding thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Written and directed by Dan Gilroy, Nightcrawler stars Jake Gyllenhaal as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.

Brad Furman (The Lincoln Lawyer) has come aboard to direct Sylvester Stallone in Scarpa. Written by Nicholas Pileggi (GoodFellas, Casino), the film will center on the story of real-life hitman Gregory Scarpa (Stallone), a man who murdered for the mob, suspected in the murders of his own biological family, then turned FBI informant. Avi Lerner's Millennium Films is producing with the hope of beginning production early 2015. Deadline Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari (Sabrina the Teenage Witch) have apparently come provide on set production rewrites to the Ant-Man script on an "as needed" basis following Adam McKay's most recent draft. Filming begins next month in Atlanta, Georgia. Latino Review Even though I thought this had already been confirmed as I've had the spin-off from James Wan's The Conjuring, Annabelle in my database as an October 3 release for some time, apparently yesterday it was made official. So, do with that what you will.

We’ve seen some heavy-duty modern warfare films over the past decade, but none of them featured ghosts as the enemy. That’s the twist in Legendary Pictures’ upcoming supernatural thriller Spectral, which is beginning to take shape now that another actor has joined the cast.
Deadline reports that Clayne Crawford (SundanceTV’s Rectify) has signed on to play the role of Sergeant Calvin Toll, “a focused but short-fused military lifer.” Crawford joins a cast that includes James Badge Dale (World War Z) in a lead role and actors Max Martini (Pacific Rim) and Cory Hardrict (Battle Los Angeles). Spectral, described as a “supernatural Black Hawk Down,” will be directed by first-timer Nic Mathieu and was originally written by George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau) based on a pitch by Ian Fried, before later receiving the rewrite treatment from John Gatins (Flight, Real Steel).

Beverly Hills, Calif. — With the Independent Spirit Awards and the Oscars coming up this weekend, finally putting a bow on the year and wrapping up the kudos season, studios, agencies, production companies and anyone in between are feting those in their midst with skin in the game at this soiree or that. It was a two-hour event but some folks were just in and out. "Wolf" stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill made an appearance but didn't linger. James Badge Dale has got to be one of Hollywood’s most under-appreciated talents. I wouldn’t call him an unknown, but he’s nowhere near as big a name as he should be. Despite taking substantial roles in three tentpoles last summer (World War Z, Iron Man 3 and The Lone Ranger), he’s still not on the A-list and has yet to really break out.
Thankfully, that may change in the near future, as the actor has just signed on for the lead role in Nic Mathieu’s Spectral, which is being described as a “supernatural Black Hawk Down.” The film will focus on a special-ops team tasked with protecting New York City from supernatural beings.
Ok, so it doesn’t sound like the most original premise and in fact, we saw something pretty similar with last year’s horrendous R.I.P.D.. Still, it would be...
