Despite the egregious snubbing of David Lowery's "The Green Knight" during last year's Academy Awards ceremony, real ones know that the film was one of the very best of 2021. The epic medieval fantasy film from A24 based on the 14th-century poem "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," saw Dev Patel as King Arthur's nephew Gawain, who sets out on the ultimate journey to test his bravery and come face-to-face with the titular Green Knight.
The film is about to receive a special Blu-ray collector's edition (not to be confused with the 2021 Blu-ray release) next month, and according to our friends over at Collider, one of the included special features will be a 20-minute companion short film from Lowery called "The Oak Thorn & The Old Rose of Love." The short film will loosely connect to "The Green Knight," focusing on two characters that share knowledge in "unconventional ways."

Andrew Patterson’s retro sci-fi thriller “The Vast of Night” has the look and feel of a restored 1950s Cadillac. There are certain aspects that appear new, but your first impression of the car is of its original time and era, a place that seems both modern yet quaintly of the past. From the moment the opening shot closes in on an old TV set playing an episode of “Paradox Theater,” a riff on old “Twilight Zone” and “The Outer Limits” shows, we’re placed in the front seat of a story that feels both old and new, familiar yet different.
Once the camera bypasses the old faded black-and-white TV set, it fades in on an evening in the small town of Cayuga, New Mexico. Everett (Jake Horowitz), a smooth-talking radio DJ, arrives at a busy basketball game where most of the locals are gathering. He’s joined by Fay...

During awards season, craft discussions often focus on films in which large teams of technicians create whole worlds of images, effects, and sounds. However, as we saw last year with “Moonlight,” it’s a mistake to dismiss the craft of a low-budget film.
After making Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon,” director David Lowery wanted to shoot “A Ghost Story” with a small crew of friends, in a small home, and in a limited time period. And yet from composer Daniel Hart’s evocative score that works in perfect harmony with Johnny Marshall’s sound design, to costume designer Annell Brodeur’s remarkable feat of turning a bedsheet into a practical and beautiful ghost costume, the level of below-the-line talent was just as impressive as the small cities of people who made “Dunkirk” and “Blade Runner 2049.”
Possibly the biggest challenges on “A Ghost Story” belonged to Lowery and his cinematographer,...

Considering 2012's Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner "Beasts of the Southern Wild" is now a Best Picture nominee at the Academy Awards, it's a good practice to keep tabs on which film wins top honors at the annual film festival. This year Ryan Coogler's "Fruitvale" was awarded both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award, despite films like "Upstream Color," "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" and "The Spectacular Now" all being worthy contenders.
On the documentary side, "Blood Brother" also scooped up the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award. Other films like "Afternoon Delight," "Dirty Wars" and "Jiseul" were recognized by Sundance, while much buzzed about movies like "Kill Your Darlings" went home empty handed. Check out the full list of winners after the jump.

Last night the 2013 Sundance Award Ceremony kicked off with a fancy night of food, drinks, and people giving teary eyed speeches. The Ceremony itself was hosted by Sundance favorite, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, whose film and directorial debut Don Jon’s Addiction premiered earlier this week.
One of the night’s biggest surprises, was Special Audience Award for Sound Design for Shane Carruth’s (Primer) newest Sundance submission Upstream Color. It was a film that severely polarized legions of audiences and critics this year, so much so that I believe the jury felt the need to make the award up in order to make note of it.
The other big surprise winners were the U.S. Documentary Blood Brother, which won both the Audience and the Grand Jury Prize, as well as the U.S. Dramatic Film Fruitvale which also won both the Audience and Grand Jury Prize. Essentially, this means that...

Fruitvale became the first Sundance film to win the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for U.S. Dramatic film since Precious in 2009. First-time director Ryan Coogler was inspired to write the film after 22-year-old Oscar Grant was shot in the back and killed by Oakland transit police on New Year’s Day morning 2009. Fruitvale tells the story of Grant’s last 24 hours alive, as he attempts to become a better father, a better boyfriend, and a better son and friend. “It’s about human beings and how we treat each other,” said Coogler, “how we treat people that...
