Ella Glendining is both the director and subject of documentary “Is There Anybody Out There?,” a global search for someone with a body that looks like hers.
The film debuted at Sundance this year and went on to achieve global acclaim, winning a slew of awards along the way. Recent accolades include winning the BFI and Chanel Filmmaker Award and being named as one of the U.K. talents in the BAFTA Breakthrough 2023 cohort.
“A big thing for me making a personal film was that I was insecure and worried that people would think that I was just the subject of a documentary, but to be recognized on this level is an incredible confidence boost in terms of me as a filmmaker, because that’s who I am. What I am first and foremost is a filmmaker and a storyteller,” Glendining, who was born with a rare leg disability, told Variety.

Is There Anybody Out There? from Brighton-based director Ella Glendining is a self-professed love letter to the disabled community and anyone who has ever felt other. It is a formidable debut feature by a filmmaker who has refused to allow society’s expectations or prejudices about her disability to stand in her way, instead using her tenacity to build a career in a notoriously difficult and ableist industry. Feeling that she was at the right moment in her career and wanting to build upon a lifelong gnawing desire to find someone with her same rare disability, Glendining, with the support of the BFI Doc Society, embarked upon an emotional four year journey to tell her story. Is There Anybody Out There? follows the filmmaker’s global search for someone who may have experienced life from the same vantage point she has and over the course of the film takes us...

The projects have received between £10,000 - £80,000.
The BFI has increased its funding commitment to the BFI Doc Society Fund to £1.776m for a period of 18 months.
The organisation had earlier this year committed to injecting £1m annually into the newly-formed fund, which has taken over all of the BFI’s production funding activities for documentaries.

BAFTA-winner to adapt short story Dogfight, from cult sci-fi writer; currently in Rotterdam with Brand New-u.
BAFTA-winning British director Simon Pummell is preparing a new film based on Dogfight, a short story by cult sci-fi writer William Gibson, co-written with Michael Swanwick.
It will be made with his regular producing partner Janine Marmot of London-based Hot Property Films.
“It is a film about gambling,” Pummell explained. “When I talked to (William) Gibson about it, he said it was a riff on The Hustler. The backbone of the film is the idea that every idea of improvement, quality and happiness in our life can be accounted for in money.”
Pummel, who is scripting Dogfight, is currently putting the finishing touches to his new feature Brand New-u. The futuristic psychological thriller, sold internationally by Match Factory, is in advanced post-production and will be ready by March.

Ahead of this year’s BAFTAs, HeyUGuys had the privilege to catch up with the writer-director of Victor + Kelly Kieran Evans who is nominated for the Best British Debut BAFTA on Sunday the 16th February. It is a nomination he never expected, but one that he admits has put him a great position.
Whilst the purpose of our conversation was his BAFTA nomination, in speaking with Kieran I uncovered a compelling story of his journey towards his nomination for outstanding debut. Behind the BAFTA gold mask lies a story of a mother and her son’s love for cinema, their appreciation of cinematic magic, a filmmakers reverence for the craft of filmmaking, and the desire to create stories that have and will continue to take us out of our space.

I'd long since grown bored with the characters in my third novel, Kelly+Victor – until a film set brought them clamouring back for my attention
The Molyneux pub, a big corner boozer in the Kensington/Anfield area of Liverpool, looks like a crime scene. Indeed, the rumour will spread that it has been the scene of a fatal shooting: blackout sheets drape the windows, official-looking people mill on the pavements, cameras and booms are in evidence. This is a not uncommon sight here, except today there is a distinct lack of high-visibility police jerkins. Inside the pub, the air is one of hushed reverence. Someone whispers a greeting in my ear, steers me over python cables and sits me down in front of a monitor. Then they put some earphones on my head. On the screen, a desperate-looking young man leans over a table towards a desperate-looking young woman and...
