As the New Year arrives, we salute a few favourite TV episodes depicting this momentous time of year...
New Year is a time for reflection on the past and resolution for the future, an opportunity to consider what you’ve achieved and what you’re yet to work on. It’s also a time to stay up well past midnight, partying the night away with friends and family, potentially embarrassing yourself in the process. That dichotomy ensures that the New Year is fertile ground for television, and the finest comedies and dramatic series use the moment to allow for contemplation amidst the alcoholic excesses. Here are twenty New Year episodes that offer an entertaining take on the aeons-old celebration - from emotional character pieces to geeky genre takes and old-fashioned barrages of seasonal comedy.

Lucky Louie, Season 1, Episode 6: “Flowers for Kim”
Written by Jon Ross
Directed by Andrew D. Weyman
Aired on July 17th, 2006 on HBO
Throughout Lucky Louie’s prior episodes, the show has struggled to toe the line between using a dated style to express contemporary ideas and genuinely espousing a retrograde attitude. Although some moments, like Rich’s misogynistic jokes, have at least had the awareness not to directly align the viewer with the sentiments being conveyed, others, like the racist caricature in “A Mugging Story,” have seemed flat-out backwards. Louis C.K.’s conception for the show doesn’t seem inherently misguided, but the missteps of the early episodes have made the approach feel questionable.
It’s refreshing then, to see a half hour which finally works as C.K. intends. From the beginning of the cold open, writer Jon Ross puts the freedom from censorship allowed by HBO to good use,...

Todrick Hall, the YouTube star and onetime "American Idol" semifinalist, has a habit of producing unbelievable, gay-centric clips parodying Disney figures. His empire has grown, and now in the new video "Beauty and the Beat Boots" he brings us a slew of gay and gayish celebrity cameos and points out that, yes, Belle is a bit basic. Here are my favorite cameos (so far; I might find a few dozen more later) RuPaul. There he is at La's gay dance basilica The Abbey having no time for Belle's speech. Pit Crew! Away with us! Daniel Franzese of "Mean Girls" and "Looking." He's palling around with "Big Brother" alum Frankie Grande, who is really committed to that Burger King Kids Club look. Fortune Feimster. The onetime "Chelsea Lately" regular and standup star can be broadly funny or throw down a great one-liner. Ross Mathews: I feel like we haven't seen the "Hello,...

Comedian Sarah Colonna just got a great birthday present: She's engaged! Seattle Seahawks punter Jon Ryan, 33, popped the question at his home in Newcastle, Washington on Sunday - one day before Colonna turned 40. "It was a complete surprise. We are both so excited. Truly a vision in white, Chelsea Handler was met with a standing ovation at the top of Tuesday’s awkward, emotional — and, most dangerously, live — final episode of E!’s Chelsea Lately.

“Tonight, we’re wrapping up seven years of stupidity, and I am very impressed with myself,” the hostess began. “The only other time I spent seven years in one place was high school.”

Gordon Ramsay is ending Kitchen Nightmares, both the U.S. and UK versions. I liked the idea of Kitchen Nightmares, if not the way the show turned out.
The new season of Million Dollar Listing: Los Angeles will include some cast changes including the departure of Madison Hildebrand. Madison was part of the show since the beginning, from when it was more about real estate than about the realtors’ personalities. In his time on the show, we followed him as he came to terms with his sexuality.
According to The Wrap, E! is likely to cancel Hello Ross, even though it just signed Ross Mathews to a two-year deal. Thewrap says that Mathews was eyed as a replacement for Chelsea Handler, but the channel would like to have a complete break with Handler, who produces Hello Ross.
