Welcome to your Thursday morning television briefing. Sarah Wynter (24) has joined the cast of FX's Damages in a recurring role on the series' third season, set to launch in early 2010. She joins the previously reported Reiko Aylesworth, Martin Short, Lily Tomlin, and Campbell Scott. Wynter will play a mysterious "'security specialist' helping a high-level assistant district attorney unravel" a financial scheme; Aylesworth will play the wife of Campbell Scott's character. [Editor: I've also just been informed that "Short's character is a high-powered attorney (family friend) who defends a prominent NY family accused of the financial scheme. Lily Tomlin plays the matriarch of the family."] (Hollywood Reporter) Life on Mars creators Ashley Pharoah and Matthew Graham have been commissioned by BBC Worldwide new drama czar Jane Tranter to write the script for an ABC drama pilot described as a "California cop show with a British twist." Should the project--executive produced by Julie Gardner--go to pilot, it would be produced by BBC Worldwide's Los Angeles production team and Pharoah and Gardner would remain heavily involved, unlike their limited creative involvement with the Us version of Life on Mars. »

I'm glad everyone's loving Jane Lynch on Glee. Really. But if you think she's good on that show, check her out on Party Down, the under-the-radar comedy on Starz that I am obsessed with. And now, good news! Lynch and Kristen Bell will both appear on the second season of show, which starts in April. Holla! For the uninitiated, Party Down is Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas' series about La cater-waiters. And Party Down is to workplace comedies what Vm was to high school shows: A clever and distinct character-driven take on a sometimes hokey genre. Also, it is awesome, »

Chicago – It’s a vastly overused phrase in criticism, but MTV’s “The State” truly was ahead of its time. I remember seeing the show in its original broadcast on MTV and thinking it was like nothing else on television. Now it would easily fit in the comedy landscape. After years of begging, fans of “The State” are finally being given a complete series set and it was worth the wait.
Perhaps one of the reasons that “The State” feels so ahead of its time is the frequency with which its cast members pop up in film and television now. The cast of “The State” would go on to work together on shows like “Stella,” “Viva Variety,” and “Reno 911!” and films like “Wet Hot American Summer” and “The Ten,” but they would also find massive success apart from the whole troupe.
DVD Rating: 4.0/5.0 Original cast members of “The State” included Kevin Allison, »

MTV’s sketch show still mostly hilarious
Though extremely informed by the pop culture of its time, MTV sketch show The State has aged well. Like its spiritual predecessors, Monty Python and The Kids in the Hall, its surreality remains at the very least interesting, if not outright hilarious—even now, when what it’s riffing on has long been forgotten. While old fans can see the show in its full glory (well, almost—unfortunately, due to licensing issues, the DVD is missing the show’s original soundtrack), they may be surprised that The State isn’t quite as sharp or weird as they remember—just like any other sketch show, it has some duds. Still, while it »

Reaper opened its first season with a fresh cast, a great premise and a pilot directed by Kevin Smith; for all intents and purposes it had a sweet start. However, after the first 6 episodes it became clear that this show about Sam Oliver (Bret Harrison), whose parents sold his soul to the devil, had fallen into an unfortunately formulaic funk. It seemed like the show with such promise had devolved into nothing more than procedural wherein boy receives tool, boy reaps soul and the sidekicks provide some laughs along the way. Luckily, that slack didn’t stick.
Careening wildly off course in the latter third of the season by introducing the demonic couple Tony (Ken Marino) and Steve (Michael Ian Black) and establishing its own mini-mythos, Reaper found a new course and a new life (to take) with a terrific season finale; which is why Reaper: Season Two comes with such high expectations. »

Despite valiantly fighting off the "evil" ratings juggernaut known as American Idol, it looks like Sam and friends have lost the battle. Reaper has been cancelled by the CW network.
Revolving around a young slacker whose parents have sold his soul to the devil, Reaper showcases the talents of actors like Bret Harrison, Tyler Labine, Rick Gonzalez, Missy Peregrym, Ray Wise, Andrew Airlie, Valerie Rae Miller, Donavon Stinson, Christine Willes, Allison Hossack, Ken Marino, and Jessica Stroup.
Once expected to be a breakout hit of the 2007-08 season, the series averaged just 2.7 million viewers and a 1.2/3 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. It was renewed for a second year but the network delayed it until mid-season and then scheduled it opposite American Idol.
Initially, the show did pretty well but then the numbers began to erode. As a result, the CW network has terminated the series after two short seasons. »

According to Variety, Starz has decided to renew one of Matt Raub’s favorite shows, and his pick from last week, Party Down. All of the cast including Ken Marino, Adam Scott (who will now also serve as a producer), Martin Starr, Ryan Hansen and Lizzy Caplan return for season two with the possible exception of Jane Lynch, who’s currently comitted to Fox’s new series Glee.
In case you’re not familiar with Party Down, the show, Exec. Produced by Thomas, John Enbom, Dan Etheridge and Paul Rudd, centers on wannabe Hollywood players making ends meet by working for a catering company. Starz has ordered a second season of the critically adored comedy series "Party Down." In announcing the pickup, Starz said that Ken Marino, Adam Scott, Martin Starr, Ryan Hansen and Lizzy Caplan will all be back for another round of cater-waiter adventures. One absent name, fans will note, is Jane Lynch, whose role on the Fox comedy "Glee" was bumped from recurring to regular. The Starz release also doesn't mention Jennifer Coolidge, who filled in for Lynch in the season's last two "Party Down" episodes. "Starz aims to give our audience fresh, original and enormously entertaining originals to accompany our... »

Starz has greenlit a second season of Party Down, its critically acclaimed half-hour comedy about a Los Angeles catering team - Hollywood wannabes stuck working for tips while hoping for their big break. Created and executive produced by Rob Thomas (Veronica Mars, Cupid) along with John Enbom, Paul Rudd and Dan Etheridge, the series has been touted as one of the funniest new shows of 2009.
Called "a must-see" by USA Today, Party Down features a talented ensemble of actors, including Ken Marino as Ron Donald, the aggressively pious leader of the Party Down Catering company; Adam Scott as Henry Pollard, the one-time actor who has returned to the life of cater-waiter; Martin Starr as Roman DeBeers, the team's self-proclaimed Sci Fi visionary and all-purpose intellectual; Ryan Hansen as Kyle Bradway, who's an actor, model and front-man for an earnest alt-rock band when not working Hollywood parties; and Lizzy Caplan as Casey Klein, »

So spring is in the air, and the last thing I want to be doing right now is sitting at a computer writing this column, and the last thing you want to be doing is sitting at your work computer reading the damn thing.
No, we want to be out in the sunshine with the top down and the wind of freedom blowing through our hair. Okay, blowing through your hair – I don’t have hair anymore, I have stubble. But still, when I’m right, I’m right, right?
Of course, I’m right. So let’s blow this joint! Throw a 12-pack into the back of this Mustang and let’s peel off down that yellow brick road!

Chatting with … Dennis Grabosch
Before there was Forbidden Love’s Christian and Olli or As The World Turns’ Luke and Noah, there was All That Matters’ (Alles Was Zählt) wildly popular gay romance between Deniz Öztürk (Igor Dolgatschew) and Roman Wild (out actor Dennis Grabosch). While the sexy, steamy romance between Roman and Deniz ended long ago, fans still hope for a reunion between the couple. But will it ever happen?
We chatted via e-mail with Dennis Grabosch about the popularity of the couple, if they’ll ever reunite, his decision to come out as an openly gay man, his recent marriage – and more!
Note: This interview was conducted before the news about the character of Roman getting a new lover.

A baby becomes the center of the attention in the next "Reaper". An escaped soul leaves her baby behind, causing Sam, Sock and Ben to turn to Tony for help. There will be a scene where the boys lose control of the baby stroller that glides to the heavy traffic. Ken Marino reprises his role as Tony.
Meanwhile, Andi finally discovers Sam's secret. Morgan tells her that Sam is the Devil's son. The episode is called "I Want My Baby Back" and airs March 31.
"Reaper" has been picking up the pace with its rating. Last week's episode "The Favorite" went from 1.124 million to 1.147 million in its 18-49 average. However, it is still beyond other The CW series like "90210", "One Tree Hill" and "Gossip Girl".

When I first saw previews for “Role Models” I thought it was going to be another cute, family-friendly comedy that just kind of came and went out of theaters. Then I found out it was directed by David Wain and written by Paul Rudd, David Wain, and Ken Marino (some of the geniuses behind MTV’s “The State” and one of my all-time favorite comedies “Wet Hot American Summer), after learning this I was immediately sold. So instead of getting a sugarcoated, boy-becoming-a-man-story, I got an incredibly vulgar, hysterical, raunchy boy-becoming-a-man-story by mentoring a foul-mouthed little kid and becoming one of the Knights of Laire (or Larp Live Action Role Playing) in the ultimate Ren-fair nerd showdown. “Role Models” is yet another comedy film in this new and fantastic trend to take a good moral message and wrap it in crude, outrageous ... »

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0 Chicago – David Wain’s “Role Models” is far from a perfect comedy, but the Universal Blu-Ray release of it is one of the best of the year so far. The release of “Role Models” includes a great video transfer, entertaining series of special features, and a comedy that holds up pretty well on repeat viewing. What more do you want?
“Role Models” features a great set-up with a fantastic cast, but the film itself doesn’t quite have the follow-through that I wish director David Wain had delivered. Despite the near-miss of the entire project, the first half-hour is laugh-out-loud funny and will be more than enough to justify a rental.
Role Models will be released on Blu-Ray on March 10th, 2009.

Television Rating: 3.0/5.0 Chicago – I adored the first, underrated season of “Reaper” and was as puzzled as any TV viewer that the CW saw in their wisdom to delay season two until nearly ten months after the last episode aired. More than ever, television viewers operate in an “out of sight, out of mind” mentality and I don’t see how the delay and the brief season (just 13 episodes) could possibly do anything to build a following for this nearly-cancelled gem.
With all the time off and the anticipation over what is clearly the last chance for this clever program, I have the worst possible news about the second season premiere of “Reaper,” titled “Episode IV: A New Hope”. It’s not that good. In the history of the show, it’s below the median line when it comes to episode quality and I just don’t see how this is »

Like a bad breakup, I anticipated getting over the abrupt and unfinished ending of Veronica Mars a lot sooner. I mourned the loss, wrote a bitchy letter to the CW’s president begging him to bring the show back and finally accepted that it was over.
Since the show’s ending, keeping tabs on film and television appearances by Kristen Bell has become a sort of hobby. Thankfully, Vm creator Rob Thomas brought her aboard his latest project, along with several other former Neptune residents and my personal favorite funny lady, Jane Lynch.
The new show, Party Down, is slated to premiere on the Starz cable channel on March 20. It tells the story of a "Los Angeles catering team — wannabes stuck working for tips while hoping for their big break. Each episode of the 10-part original series finds the hapless catering team working a new event — from sweet-16 affairs to »
