Chicago – “The ABCs of Death” may easily rank as the most repugnant two hours I’ve ever had the displeasure of being condemned to review. But don’t let that entice you, gorehounds. It’s also uninspired and thoroughly monotonous. The only thing that scared me was my realization after the first short film had ended that I still had 25 films left to go. This isn’t entertainment. It’s an endurance test.
Consider the vignette about an obese woman who decides, in a fit of depression, to slice off her fat. Her self-mutilation is juxtaposed with footage of a skinny model striking poses in a commercial. The director, Xavier Gens, cuts back and forth between the imagery with such mechanical repetition that the viewer develops a mixture of nauseation and whiplash but not, alas, fear. What a sad encapsulation of modern horror’s exceedingly sorry state. Horror used to be about atmosphere,...

Title: The ABCs of Death Director(s): 26 of them Starring: Ingrid Bolso Berdal, Dallas Malloy, Ivan Gonzalez, Kyra Zagorsky The ABCs of Death is a gruesome group effort. 26 directors, most of them unknown to the casual cinema fan, from all over the world were sent a letter from the alphabet. Based on their respective letter, they have to come up with a short film – no longer than 5 minutes – that depicts a word; which then will become the cause of death to a character in their film. For example, if you drew the letter C, the title of your film could be “Death by ChapStick.” If it [ Read More ]

Title: Nipples & Palm Trees Director: Dylan Reynolds Starring: Matt James, Sadie Katz, Aki Kitamura, Dallas Malloy, Vanessa Rose Parker If a catchy, memorable and/or weirdly evocative title made a film, then surely “Nipples & Palm Trees” would be among the year’s best releases. Unfortunately, there’s plenty of color and sizzle but precious little of substance in this unenlightening tale of a down-and-out Los Angeles artist and his fitful relationship with his muse. Energetically shot enough to qualify as a travelogue curio for hardcore indie fans in search of another City-of-Angels valentine, there’s otherwise little to recommend this low-budget misfire. The film centers on Jackson (screenwriter Matt James), a Venice Beach painter of sexually graphic couplings who suffers the [ Read More ]...
