Schneider Vs. Bax
Director: Alex van Warmerdam // Writer: Alex van Warmerdam
Steadily working Dutch auteur Alex van Warmerdam has been systematically making bizarre, offbeat features since 1986’s Voyeur (aka Abel), with titles like 1992’s The Northerners or 2003’s Grimm reaching a wider international audience. But at Cannes 2013, Warmerdam’s eighth feature, Borgman, was a breakout success. Though it went home empty handed, it certainly increased Warmerdam’s profile with a delightfully strange film. His latest, Schneider Vs. Bax, sees the director with his usual set cast of returning characters, including Pierre Bokma and his wife, Annet Malherbe, who starred in nearly all his features. A hitman is assigned the simple task of killing a solitary writer before the night is through. Of course, things don’t go as planned.
Cast: Alex van Warmerdam, Annet Malherbe, Pierre Bokma
Production Co.: Graniet Film Bv, Czar, Verenigde Arbeiders Radio Amateurs (Vara)

Over the past year, one movie has been building a bit of buzz thanks a continual presence on the festival circuit, premiering at Cannes, playing Tiff and hitting Fantastic Fest among the more notable of its many stops. We're talking about Alex van Warmerdam's "Borgman," and if you like your cinema weird and eerie, this one has you covered. Our Jessica Kiang—as you'll see in the trailer too—called this " 'Dogtooth' meets Michael Haneke," and those checkpoints are easy to see in this new U.S. trailer for the film. Starring Jan Bijvoet, Hadewych Minis, Jeroen Perceval, Sara Hjort Ditlevsen, Eva van de Wijdeven, Annet Malherbe, Tom Dewispelaere and the director himself, the story follows a vagrant who inserts himself into the lives of an upper class family, slowly turning their world upside down, until his true reasons for being there are revealed. This looks dark, twisted and...

If you had your ear to the ground on the festival circuit last year, one movie that earned some solid buzz was Alex van Warmerdam's "Borgman." Now, the darkly twisted tale is coming to cinemas stateside. Starring Jan Bijvoet, Hadewych Minis, Jeroen Perceval, Sara Hjort Ditlevsen, Eva van de Wijdeven, Annet Malherbe, Tom Dewispelaere and the director himself, the unique premise follows a vagrant who moves into the home of an upper class family and starts to take over their lives, with his more sinister motivations laying beneath the surface. - #24. The Last Days Of Emma Blank Director: Alex van WarmerdamCast: Marlies Heuer, Gene Bervoets, Annet Malherbe, Eva van de Wijdeven, Gijs NaberDistributor: Rights Available. Buzz: Can't say that I'm familiar with the Dutch film industry or helmer Alex van Warmerdam, but I've made room in my schedule for this dark comedy based on a couple of stills and the trailer. Tiff's Dimitri Eipides describes this as "a dark comedy so cynical it's bound to make your head spin. The director even casts himself as a dog. Alex van Warmerdam pushes his way forward with a brilliant adaptation of a near-impossible screenplay." I could see this being a fit on a label such as IFC Films. The Gist: Emma is a lady living in high style, surrounded by family members who double as maids and servants. Everyone hopes Emma’s bad health will soon do her in, letting them inherit her substantial wealth.
