Akin Omotoso, the filmmaker behind Disney Plus’ Giannis Antetokounmpo biopic “Rise,” has been attached to direct “The Plot to Save South Africa,” an adaptation of Justice Malala’s gripping book about a 1990s white supremacist plot that almost plunged the young democracy into civil war.
“The Plot to Save South Africa” will be produced by Johannesburg-based production outfit Ochre Moving Pictures, which signed a deal with Netflix last year to adapt multiple books for the streaming service alongside Omotoso. “Plot,” however, is not included in that deal, and is part of an existing partnership between Ochre and Omotoso that includes a crime drama adaptation of Nigerian playwright Femi Osofisan’s novel “Pirates.”
The story begins in 1993, as Nelson Mandela has just been released after 27 years in prison and is in power-sharing talks with President F.W. de Klerk. After decades of resistance, the apartheid regime seems poised to fall, until a...

“The Daily Show’s” Michael Kosta has a problem with Scholastic’s new book censorship policy. Under this new guideline, schools can opt to exclude what have been called diverse titles from their Scholastic Book Fair. Those titles include any book that explores race, gender and sexuality, including biographies of Malala and LeBron James.
“So now bigots can just check a box and all the books will be removed? C’mon guys, if you’re going to be racist and sexist you can’t also be lazy,” Kosta said on Thursday night.
The late night host encouraged parents to “put the work in.”
“Who knows? Maybe if you took the time to read these books that you think are so terrible, actually absorb them, you might just find out that all kids books are terrible,” Kosta said.

Actress Kashmira Pardeshi has decoded her drill for the preparation of her intensely layered character, Aliya in the riveting thriller ‘The Freelancer’, and shared how she slipped into the skin of her character. Talking about the preparation for her role as Aliya, Kashmira said: “So, the script is based on the book ‘Ticket to Syria’. But I read the book much later as I was asked not to read the book. I even personally believe that a well written script will have everything that an actor needs.”
“But to prepare for the character, I watched a lot of documentaries made on families that have faced this. On girls that have voluntarily fled to Syria, or that have been abducted and taken there. I read about Sushmita Banerjee, a Kabuliwala’s wife and referred to a lot of Malala stories which were really very inspiring,” she shared.

Oscar winner Davis Guggenheim is no stranger to bold-faced names, having worked with the likes of Al Gore, Barack Obama and Malala Yousafzai. But some three years ago, he found himself, as he says, “stuck.”
“I wanted to do something different. I wanted to find joy in my work. I wanted to experiment and take some big risks,” says Guggenheim. At the time, he was reading Michael J. Fox’s autobiography, No Time Like the Future, and a light bulb went off. “I said, ‘Wow, this could be a wild ride.’ That was one of the first things I jotted in the margins of the book: ‘This could be a wild ride.’ “

Jimmy Kimmel is still the afterglow of a strong Oscars-hosting performance. Wednesday night he took his final victory lap, in which a guest heaped praise on a night rife with quality jokes that brought a desperately-needed 12 percent boost in telecast ratings over the previous year. And who better to do it than the beloved entertainer who notoriously failed at his sole attempt at hosting the show: David Letterman?
Showing the late-night legend the respect he deserves, the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” host welcomed Letterman by saying that “nobody on television means more to me than [him].”
The extremely bearded comedian, on Jimmy’s couch to promote his forthcoming Disney+ documentary/chat with Bono and The Edge of U2, was quick to congratulate Kimmel on a job well done at the Oscars. He began by repeating a dopey line he always used to say and no one in the audience laughed. This is...

Everything Everywhere All at Once dominated the 95th Academy Awards, which were held on Sunday night at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre.
Michelle Yeoh took home the Best Actress prize, becoming the first Asian woman and only second woman of colour to win the trophy. The film also won Best Picture, and Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for writer/directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.
Brendan Fraser cemented his comeback with a Best Actor win for The Whale, while Everything Everywhere stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Ke Huy Quan picked up Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively.
The night was not without controversy, with criticism aimed at Jimmy Kimmel’s interview with Malala and a painful encounter between model Ashley Graham and an “obnoxious” Hugh Grant.

Malala Yousafzai tweeted a message the morning after Jimmy Kimmel had a peculiar question to ask the activist during the Oscars.
The Nobel Peace Prize winner, 25, appeared highly uncomfortable when the Oscar host approached her with a question during a break.
Kimmel asked Yousafzai — who was a teenage education activist that was shot in the face by the Taliban in Pakistan in 2012 — a question about Chris Pine and Harry Styles’ ‘spit-gate’ debacle.
The “Stranger At The Gate” filmmaker looked confused before answering: “I only talk about peace.”

“This is what the bear would look like. It’s terrifying,” Banks joked, as the mysterious person in the costume punched and kicked the air. “Stop it. No director wants to deal with this. Ok, what are you doing?” she asked the bear, as her co-presenter pointed at people in the audience and at his nose.

The best places to check out for which way the mood is swinging at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, or just the Academy, this Oscars season, are the two Los Angeles natives – ‘Variety’, which has been reporting on Hollywood even before the Oscars were invented, and the ‘Los Angeles Times’ (Lat).
And both have given their votes in favour of “Naatu Naatu”, the M M Keeravani-composed hit number from “Rrr”, for Best Original Song and Guneet Monga and Kartiki Gonsalves’s Netflix production, “The Elephant Whisperers”, for the Best Documentary Short.
Whereas Lat is categorical in its thumbs up for “Naatu Naatu”, ‘Variety’ hedges its bet. “The divas don’t have much of a chance against ‘Rrr’ and its joyous dance,” Lat proclaims.
‘Variety’, however, points to an imponderable: the effect of Rihanna’s spellbinding performance at Super Bowl Lvii at State Farm Stadium in Glendale,...

Director Joshua Seftel and executive producer/Nobel Prize-winner Malala Yousafzai entered the Oscar race this January with the hard-hitting 29-minute short documentary “Stranger at the Gate,” which depicts the unlikely meeting between a Ptsd-afflicted, Islamaphobic former Marine and the members of an Indiana mosque (notably an Afghan refugee named Bibi Bahrami) that help diffuse his violent tendencies toward them.
“Stranger at the Gate” has enjoyed incredible acclaim and recognition on the film festival circuit over the past several months, but there was one major fan that left them a little bit speechless, as revealed in a recent DGA screening in Los Angeles between Malala and director Seftel, exclusive video of which you can watch above.
“We were at the [Oscar] nominees luncheon, and we came upon Steven Spielberg, as one does…he said, ‘I’ve seen your film three times now and I’ve cried in a different spot,” Malala said.

The annual Oscar nominees luncheon was back at the Beverly Hilton, and back just like the old days before the pandemic changed everything. But if the vibe and attendance at today’s lunch is any indication the Oscars themselves could be in for a very good night as the Academy seems bound and determined to bring the show back to its old self, and that means a more traditional kind of Oscar experience after the surreal pandemic-affected ceremony at Union Station in 2021, and last year’s Will Smith Slap edition. We can use a little comfort food from the Oscars and I just get the feeling, with Jimmy Kimmel back as host, it might be just what the doctor ordered for the Academy’s big night.

Actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas has unfollowed comedian-actor Hasan Minhaj on social media. Minhaj had earlier mocked the Nobel Peace Prize winner and female education activist Malala Yousafzai for following him on Instagram. Recently, Hasan shared a video, of what looks like a promotion of his upcoming show, on his Instagram, as he wrote in the caption: “Okay, it’s gettin’ outta hand @malala!”
The video begins with the title ‘Malala claps back’ and features Hasan in the video as he says: “On October 4th, I made a joke about Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala. I said she follows me on Instagram and I don’t follow her back. Then on October 5th, she retaliated (asking who is this man?). Instead of doing a runoff, she unfollowed me on Instagram. I am sorry Malala, follow me back. I don’t know if I’ll follow you though. I am that petty.

Malala Yousafzai – activist, Nobel Peace Prize winner, and self-confessed “Stranger Things” fan – is in production on her first project for Apple, ‘Variety’ has revealed. Her production company Extracurricular has partnered with the indie studio A24 for a still-untitled feature documentary on the legendary “haenyeo” society of fisherwomen, who live on South Korea’s Jeju Island.
The Apple Original Films title is directed by Peabody Award nominee Sue Kim (“The Speed Cubers”) and is the first project to go into production from Extracurricular’s partnership with Apple TV+, which was struck in March 2021, notes ‘Variety’.
Malala unveiled her first slate of film and TV projects for Apple TV+ through Extracurricular on Monday.
Headlining the slate is the feature film adaptation of Elaine Hsieh Chou’s acclaimed book “Disorientation”, which was published earlier this year. A sharp-edged, celebrated satire, “Disorientation” is about a college student’s revealing dissertation on a young poet.

The Nobel Laureate struck a programming deal with Apple TV+ last year, and appointed former Berlanti Productions executive and “The Flight Attendant” producer Erika Kennair as president of production at Extracurricular. The resulting projects reflect “Stranger Things” and “Severance” fan Yousafzai’s wide array of interests and tastes — some of which may surprise people.
