Though an enormous number of beloved, bygone TV shows have been revived for the streaming era, there isn’t a whole lot of precedent for this kind of revival in the area of sketch comedy. It makes sense: There are fewer hit sketch comedy shows than straight sitcoms or dramas, and many of the most famous lineups would now be incomplete (like “Sctv” or “Monty Python’s Flying Circus”), or have featured too many incarnations to reunite properly (like the many casts of “Saturday Night Live”).
There’s also the matter of how sketch comedy is often fueled by youthful vitality. “The Carol Burnett Show,” for example, was a huge 11-season hit in the ’60s and ’70s, but a 1991 revival quickly floundered despite arriving just 13 years after its original finale—about the same amount of time that’s elapsed since Canadian comedy troupe the Kids in the Hall last appeared on television.

The “Kids in the Hall” cast — Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson — are unearthed from their burial plot and set loose on the world once again in the first trailer for the Prime Video revival of the beloved sketch comedy. The reboot will debut on May 13, the streamer announced on Wednesday at its Prime Video Presents Canada showcase event in Toronto.
Things are crushed from a distance, tasteless jokes are made and Queen Elizabeth spoofed in the trailer, which sees the comedians skeptical of their new streaming network, Amazon.
The upcoming season will feature eight episodes with all-new sketches and guest stars including Pete Davidson, Mark Hamill, Catherine O’Hara, Kenan Thompson, Will Forte, Paul Bellini, Brandon Ash-Mohammed, Catherine Reitman, Samantha Bee, Fred Armisen, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Jay Baruchel, Eddie Izzard, Tracee Ellis Ross and Colin Mochrie.
The original Emmy-nominated sketch show premiered in 1989 and become a cult comedy hit.

Fox has picked up Canadian legal drama “Diggstown” from Entertainment One.
Created by Floyd Kane, and starring Vinessa Antoine, the series from Canadian public broadcaster CBC follows Marcie Diggs (Antoine), a star corporate lawyer who reconsiders her priorities and moves to work in a legal-aid office after her aunt commits suicide following the pressures of a malicious prosecution. Among a new group of ragtag lawyers, Marcie is driven by one thing: to never again allow innocent lives to be destroyed by the justice system.
Fox has swooped for seasons 1 and 2 of the drama. The acquisition marks the latest Canadian pick-up by a U.S. broadcaster — a trend that has grown in popularity in the last year as the Covid-19 crisis has stunted production Stateside but has had less of an impact north of the border.

Written By: Nancy Won
Directed By: Kelly Makin
Original Airdate: 4 March 2013
In This Episode...
Nora is still on edge. She sees the two bloody undie girls that Aidan killed and it reignites her distrust of Aidan and her thirst for revenge. Josh tries to get her to blame Liam. She even seeks Liam out for answers. He has none, but I think Liam is starting to believe that Nora knows more about Brynn than she is saying. When she sees Aidan at work, she agrees to be cordial - at least until they discover what really happened with Erin. Later on, Josh proposes, and Nora says yes.
Not wanting to upset Nora any further, Aidan tries to break his date with Kat, but she won’t let him. He sticks around for her lecture and they chat after. Liam and two goons approach them.

Everyone’s favorite Canadian cross-dressing comedy troupe is back with tonight’s premiere of their eight-part murder-mystery miniseries The Kids in the Hall: Death Comes to Town (IFC, 10 p.m. Et). They each play multiple characters, but that’s McKinney as Death, who arrives in Shuckton, Ontario on a Greyhound bus and rides around on a bone-covered Mustang bike; McCulloch as Ricky, a 600 lb. shamed ex-hockey star who has been in his house since he lost...

Actor Dave Foley realized something recently while shooting "Death Comes to Town," a new eight-part miniseries premiering Jan. 12 on the CBC with his comedy troupe, the Kids in the Hall. "We've been working together for 25 years this year," says Foley, who also starred in "NewsRadio" and "A Bug's Life." "It's disturbing to me that Monty Python only started 15 years before us." Foley jokes that the secret to the Canadian troupe's longevity is that its members find one another more funny than annoying. The last time Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson appeared onscreen together was for 1996's "Brain Candy," which Foley calls a "horrible experience." Foley says the troupe, along with "Brain Candy" director Kelly Makin, learned one major lesson before embarking on this new venture: "You shouldn't go into production at a time when you all hate each other. That was a bad decision on our part with 'Brain Candy.

The Kids in the Hall have reunited for the eight-part murder mystery series Death Comes to Town, currently shooting in Canada and scheduled to premiere on the CBC in January (and, if there is a comedy god, on a Us cable station shortly thereafter). We phoned Bruce McCulloch, who also serves as exec producer, for the scoop on who'll be in drag (Dave Foley, Mark McKinney, Scott Thompson, and Kevin McDonald), who'll be wearing a codpiece (McKinney), and who'll be donning a fat suit (McCulloch)... Entertainment Weekly: You came up with the original concept: Death steps off a Greyhound bus. What was the inspiration? Bruce McCulloch: Anyone who's ever watched Mark mistreat a sommelier sees him as Death. No. All the things I've done, I've started with an image. Throughout most of the 1990’s, there were two places to go for stand-out comedy on basic cable. One place was The State, which only made it to 3 seasons, and the other was Kids in the Hall, which lasted 5 (Thank Lorne Michaels). Since then, both troupes have branched off and done plenty of other, more successful things, but it’s always nice when we hear about them getting together again.

Denise Richards has signed on to star in I Do (But I Don't), a new original movie for Lifetime. Based on Cara Lockwood's novel, the romantic comedy centers on a divorced wedding planner (Richards) who juggles a manipulative boss, an overbearing mother, a lackluster love life and one pushy bride-to-be after another. Eric Charmelo and Nicole Snyder adapted the book to the small screen, with Mickey Blue Eyes helmer Kelly Makin on board to direct. "Denise is such a refreshing actress and a perfect fit for this lighthearted movie," said Trevor Walton, Lifetime senior vp original movies. "Viewers will fall in love with the endearing and charming character that she will bring to life."...

This has certainly been the year for a new approach to mafia stories, with "Analyze This" and HBO's "The Sopranos" scoring well with audiences and critics alike. Now comes comedy "Mickey Blue Eyes", a routine Hugh Grant vehicle that fails to measure up to its two predecessors. This Warner Bros. release from Castle Rock should prove a good test of Grant's boxoffice appeal, since at the end of the day that is what's going to pull in audiences for this film.
There are, to be sure, fine performances from veterans James Caan and Burt Young to give backbone to a limp screenplay. But the laughs dry up early, and the script's structural shortcomings prove a drag on the fun that should have accompanied this fish-out-of-water tale.
When Grant, an Englishman who runs a New York auction house, proposes to Jeanne Tripplehorn, his girlfriend of three months, he discovers he's marrying into the mob. Early on, the film gets comic mileage out of the introductions of various family members, all straight out of "The Godfather".
Indeed "Godfather" star Caan plays Tripplehorn's father, all charm to mask his malignant side. Young, outfitted with huge, Coke-bottle glasses, is an underworld boss who seizes upon the auction-house business as a unique way to launder mob money.
Others come up to shake Grant's already shaking hand: Paul Lazar, his fiancee's odd brother; John Ventimiglia, Young's hot-tempered son; Joe Viterelli, who has built a career playing mafia henchmen; and other back-pounding family members and humorless FBI agents.
But it becomes swiftly apparent that these characters, drawn from other movies, will never find a home in this film. "Mickey Blue Eyes" never enters into their lives to learn what a 1999 gangster is like. Adam Scheinman and Robert Kuhn's screenplay is content to leave the characters as mere parodies of people encountered in 25-year-old movies.
Once the introductions are over, Scheinman and Kuhn search desperately for a story to tell. But the one they come up with relies so heavily on contrivance and coincidence that even the most forgiving audience member is going to notice those gaping plot holes.
And while murder, torture and vengeance can and have been a source of comedy in many films, young Canadian director Kelly Makin ("Brain Candy") is unable to find the right tone to convey much humor in this movie's ruthless malevolence. Instead, he depends on a soundtrack lifted virtually intact from wonderful Italian-American comedy "Big Night" to convince us that this mafia family is whimsically grotesque.
Further compromising the film is Grant's unwillingness to explore the central character beyond the superficial acting techniques he brings to all his recent comedy parts. If there is any difference between his approach to this role and his work in "Notting Hill" and "Four Weddings and a Funeral", it is undetectable to the naked eye.
Tripplehorn is left out of the picture for long stretches, so she has little impact. James Fox, as the auction-house owner, is often amusing but is also underutilized. Caan comes off best, investing a shallowly written character with a vulnerability and caring spirit despite his tough-guy exterior.
