About six weeks back, Beyoncé announced plans to release a country album titled Act II: Cowboy Carter. “This album has been over five years in the making,” she wrote on Instagram. “It was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed…and it was very clear that I wasn’t. But, because of that experience, I did a deeper dive into the history of Country music and studied our rich musical archive.”

This month, Beyoncé will trade the silver heels on the cover of Renaissance for cowboy boots with the release of her new album. Cowboy Carter arrives on March 29 and Beyoncé has finally released the official album cover. On it, the Houston native dons red, white, and blue, and carries an American flag on the back of a horse. In the accompanying caption, Beyoncé described the album’s inspiration, pointing to a time when she felt coldly unwelcomed in the country music industry.

Back in 2002, Toby Keith appeared on the very first episode of Total Nonstop Action Wrestling to perform his song “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue (The Angry American)” — only to be interrupted midway through by the dastardly wrestler Jeff Jarrett. There is maybe no better metaphor for the kitschy nationalist spectacle of the era. A few years before, a heel in wrestling might have incited boos and jeers from the crowd by burning an American flag. But in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, you make them hate you by interrupting a Toby Keith concert.

Over the last few years, the Gulf Coast Jam, a multi-day concert blowout held every spring in Panama City Beach, Florida, has become one of country music’s leading festivals, pulling in headliners like Miranda Lambert, Luke Bryan, Florida Georgia Line, Kane Brown, and Kenny Chesney. But recently, festival producer Rendy Lovelady has noticed something unusual backstage. “Ten or 15 years ago, everybody would sit in a circle around the table, pull out their guitars and start singing old country songs,” he says. “There was a lot of camaraderie. “Thank you Martie and Emily for sticking by me. I told you I’d take you to the Grammys!” said The Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines to her bandmates Martie Maguire and Emily Robison upon accepting Song of the Year for “Not Ready to Make Nice” at the Grammys in 2007. Watch them accept the prize above.
Maines, Maguire, Robison, and their writing partner Dan Wilson claimed the Grammys’ top songwriting award after a long, tumultuous road for The Chicks. At the Shepherd’s Bush Empire theater in London, England, in 2003, Maines said on stage that she was ashamed then-President George W. Bush was from Texas. This led to a swift backlash from country music fans and radio stations, with the band also receiving death threats.

This article contains light spoilers for the first three episodes of Daisy Jones & The Six.
Daisy Jones & The Six has become one of the most anticipated series of the year, and as it finally drops on Prime Video, the team have been kind enough to drop the entire Aurora album at the same time.
Produced by Blake Mills – who’s previously collaborated with Lana Del Ray, Dixie Chicks and John Legend – songwriters including Phoebe Bridgers, Marcus Mumford, Jackson Browne and Marcus Cunningham were brought on board to tune up the lyrics from Taylor Jenkins Reid’s book, and bring them to life in 70s technicolour.
And yes, the actors really are singing and performing of the album (you can thank the pandemic for allowing them time to tune up and become the Daisy Jones & The Six that now appears on your screen).

On November 30, we lost one of rock music’s most prolific songbirds when Christine McVie died at the age of 79. She spent most of her 50-year career with Fleetwood Mac, which has seen several reincarnations since its original lineup over half a century ago.
In 1967, British guitarist Peter Green formed the band that would eventually be known as Fleetwood Mac, with drummer Mick Fleetwood, bassist John McVie (who replaced Bob Brunning early on) and slide guitarist Jeremy Spencer. This lineup changed several times over the next few years, including the addition of guitarist Danny Kirwan, the departure of Green in May 1970 and the addition of John’s wife Christine later that year, and the addition of Bob Welch on guitar after the departure of Spencer in 1971.

The mantra of the annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, which returned to Manchester, Tennessee, this weekend after a forced two-year absence, is “radiate positivity.” For the group formerly known as the Dixie Chicks — queens of the scorched-earth, fiddle-and-banjo-tinged, stick-a-pin-in-your-voodoo-doll revenge-fantasy rallying call — those posi vibes came by way of killing Russian president Vladimir Putin in effigy. On Friday, the Chicks debuted as both the festival’s first-ever country and female-fronted headliner. And just like Earl, Vlad had to die.

Kelly Clarkson is getting by with a little help from her friends. On the June 6 episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, the 40-year-old host sat down with Natalie Maines, Emily Strayer and Martie Maguire of The Chicks and opened about how she found the "strength" to get through her divorce from Brandon Blackstock. "Female friendships," Kelly shared with the country band, whose members have all gone through their own divorces. "I think that's what really helped me" The "Since U Been Gone" singer added that "music can be also therapeutic" for her. Kelly—who shares daughter River, 7, and son Remington, 6 with Brandon—first...

Although it soon got eclipsed in some people’s memories by subsequent events, the Dixie Chicks experienced a peak moment of near-universal love when they sang the National Anthem at Super Bowl Xxxvii in 2003, a rendition that still shows up on lists of the greatest “Star Spangled Banners” in television history.
The trio now known simply as the Chicks was ready to make nice again with the anthem Thursday in kicking off the final night of the 2020 Democratic National Convention, and while their thoughts about what constitutes patriotism have no doubt deepened in the last 17 years, their harmonies soared as high as ever. Hear their new version — achieved with three-part social distancing, of course — in the video below.

Natalie Maines is best-known for being the front woman of the legendary country group, The Dixie Chicks. As an all female group, The Chicks are widely considered pioneers and all three members have contributed to the culture of country music. You never know what’s going to happen when a band takes as long a break from recording new music as The Chicks did. They finally released “Gaslighter” on July 17 after delaying it because of the coronavirus pandemic, but fans have been waiting a lot longer than just a few months for this new release. It’s their first new album in 14 years, and their long absence sure made critics’ hearts grow fonder.

The Chicks' Natalie Maines has weighed in on a fellow country group also undergoing a name change. The Chicks’ first new album in 14 years, Gaslighter, is out Friday (July 17th). Ahead of the release, the group formerly known as the Dixie Chicks performed “March March” on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
Inspired by the 2018 March for Our Lives youth protest against gun violence, the protest song feels just as relevant today as it did two years ago, and the Chicks inject that same tension, anger and yearning for change into their performance.

"We have to say things when the time is right to say them, and we've been quiet for 10 years, so get ready." That's how Emily Strayer, one-third of The Chicks (formerly of Dixie), described the long-awaited return of America's best-selling female band of all time with the Associated Press in early July. Though her math may be a bit off—it's actually been just over 14 years since the group released Taking the Long Way, their last album of new material—the sentiment remains the same: She and her country-pop compatriots Natalie Maines and Marti Maguire are back with points to be made. "It just seemed like a good reflection on our times," Maines explained. "In 20 years,...

The Dixie Chicks have undergone a name change. Amid a nationwide reckoning with racism, the veteran country band - consisting of Natalie Maines, Emily Strayer, and Martie Maguire - announced on June 25 they will simply be known as The Chicks going forward. Though the original name was inspired by Little Feat's 1973 album Dixie Chicken, the phrase is still commonly associated with the Mason–Dixon Line and, thereby, the Confederacy. "We want to meet the moment," the group said in a statement obtained by Entertainment Weekly.
"We want to meet the moment."
Prior to announcing the new name, The Chicks came to an agreement to share the name with an existing New Zealand duo. "A sincere and heartfelt thank you goes out to The Chicks of Nz for their gracious gesture in allowing us to share their name," the statement read. "We are honored to co-exist together in the world with these exceptionally talented sisters.

Call them the Artists Former Formerly Known as Dixie Chicks. The veteran multiplatinum country act said today that the band has dropped the Confederate-era part of their name and henceforth will be known as The Chicks.
The group also released a new protest song today called “March March” — watch the video below.
Natalie Maines and sisters Emily Strayer and Martie Maguire, who formed their group in 1989, are following the lead of fellow country trio Lady A, which two weeks ago changed its name from Lady Antebellum amid nationwide protests against systemic racism in the United States and the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police. The word “antebellum” refers to the pre-Civil War slavery era.
While the Chicks members didn’t make a public statement for their name change, the band’s relaunched website notes, “We want to meet this moment.” And little needs to be said about how “Dixie” plays to many these days.
