WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- A surprise Inland Revenue Department decision to treat cast and crew allowances on Warner Bros.' The Last Samurai as taxable isn't expected to jeopardize the shooting of other Hollywood productions here. "This issue has highlighted an anomaly in our taxation system that we're confident can be resolved," film industry spokesman David Madigan, of the New Zealand Film & Video Technicians Guild, said in an interview. Madigan said the local industry, Samurai Pictures N.Z. and the IRD are working together on a joint solution and described the problem as "a bit of a storm in a teacup" for the $100 million historical drama, directed by Edward Zwick and starring Tom Cruise. The film is shooting mostly in Taranaki, New Zealand.
